- elainefleming20160 contributionsEnjoyable, informative and personal cruise down South Kona coast in Hawaiian double-hulled canoe. We had a really nice cruise, what we wanted- small, personalized experience. We enjoyed the leisurely pace of the canoe, and the information Captain Chris provided, interesting tidbits of the Hawaiian settlement of the islands. A nice little snorkel.Written 30 November 2024
- 842jasonz0 contributionsReally something special.A perfect blend of sailing along the coast, snorkeling with and abundance of sea life and information of the cultural significance of the area. We where lucky enough to have turtle and a huge pod of dolphins join our tour. The crew were fantastic and informative. A must do!Written 11 May 2024
- Geeman630 contributionsEka morning canoe and snorkelling tour - a must when in KonaOn the back of doing an amazing manta ray swim with Eka last night, this morning I did their snorkelling tour. The morning tour was fun and a perfect way to again be in the crystal clear blue waters around Kona. Great attentive and highly knowledgeable staff ensured a fun morning was had. The snorkelling was very good, plenty of fish to be seen. The real bonus was having the local spinner dolphins join us on the tour too.Written 6 May 2024
- jennifer4310 contributionsSmall group boat tour with snorkeling option. My husband and I loved our tour on this double- hulled canoe! - 468myrap0 contributionsFun and adventure for everyoneChris and the crew were amazing and so helpful! Several folks on our team hadn't snorkeled before, and they felt well supported. Others had been several times, and there was fun and challenges appropriate for all levels. As an Indigenous team, we loved learning about Native Hawaiian history, culture, and key landmarks along the way! Thank you for the amazing trip!!!Written 29 February 2024
- Venture108005275710 contributionsWe will definitely do this again! Our morning sail onboard Kini-Kini was excellent. Captain Chris and Kama were both a wealth of information about the amazing landscape and Hawaiian history. We had watched this beautiful boat sail the Kona coast for years and were so excited to finally be onboard. I give it a huge thumbs up over the bigger and much more crowded sailing/snorkeling cruises available. The price for 2.5 hours could not be beat either! It exceeded our expectations. Mahalo!Written 18 February 2024

- jeremied7650 contributionsGreat ExperienceI booked this because the boat was cool. Got to see whales up close as we transited to snorkeling. Guide was knowledgeable about the region's past and present. Highly recomended. Also, the boat was actually really cool.Written 1 February 2024
- ihavethetravelbug_70 contributionsWonderful Experience! Was a little nervous about the experiences. The water was a little rough that day. Staff was phenomenal and we had absolutely the best time! They made sure everyone was comfortable and safe, the manta rays were totally amazing. I would definitely recommend this tour company to anyone looking to have this great experience.Written 3 January 2024
- C M0 contributionsMore than I even hoped for!Amazing staff! The girl at check-in seemed like she would rather be anywhere else, so I was nervous about the experience. But the captain and first mate made up for it! The care and excitement they created was great! - The smaller boat makes it more intimate. We actually stayed a little longer in the water. - The boat ride is about 3 minutes - The ocean at night is scary. But they light it up so well I always felt safe. - you will 100% see mantas and be blown away. - Check in is PAST the big building. It’s down the dark path to the right of the building. Pro tip - there is a small parking lot down there. So pass up all the parked cars and try your luck here! I will be coming back!Written 3 January 2024

Amazing experience with Cpt Panda, aka Shanda and her assistant Chris. This girl was in my group that went out the night before and didn’t she any mantas, well tonight, the manta known as Amanda didn’t disappoint! 1000 lbs and 10ft across this massive eloquent beautiful creature showed up after being in the water for 3-4 mins and stayed almost the entire hour. They say if the manta touches you’re considered blessed by the ocean, well, Amanda touched me 4 times!! This amazing manta would come and feed on the plankton over and over directly under us while we held onto the floating board getting inches away each time with her massive mouth open. The crew was super nice and fun and the entire experience was surreal to be that close to such a massive manta, highly recommend!!!

We had the best manta snorkel experience possible with Eka Canoe Adventures! Danielle, our guide in the water, and captain Kalani were awesome.
We were staying at the Sheraton Kona Resort, so we saw that the early snorkeling times were packed with boats and snorkelers (same number of mantas spread out much wider = less for each snorkeler to see). This is why we chose a later time. We were rewarded with only the two of us in the Canoe going out and a manageable number of snorkelers in the water from another boat.
When we first got in, there sea was cloudy with microscopic life! It took less than 5 minutes to see our first manta ray, and then within a few minutes there were 2 manta, followed by 3, then 4, then 5, then 6. These giants would do acrobatic summersaults coming within a few inches of our masks. It was amazing!
While we were watching this spectacle, we didn't have a chance to notice how much less cloudy the water was getting, but realized it when Danielle moved us to a new cloudy area. Soon the mantas followed to the new rich feeding ground. A few at first, but then there were too many Mantas to count! I can't explain in words how fantastic it was!
We were then visited by a pod of dolphins! Danielle and my husband both saw them just beyond my feet. I was completely saturated in the acrobatic show in front of my face, but kept feeling something rough on the soles of feet, which I dismissed as my feet somehow rubbing up against my husband's hairy leg. However, it was one or more dolphins sliding by my feet!
We moved several times throughout our time in the water, and each time we saw beautiful acrobatic manta show!
We chose Eka Canoe Adventures because we were referred by a friend (and we wanted to the Hawaiian Canoe experience), and we had a better experience than I could have possibly imagined!
I've attached pictures from the group before us below.

This was probably one of the most incredible experiences I have ever had. First, it was super fun going out to the snorkel area in a canoe versus a big boat. The canoe is motorized and probably isn’t what you’re thinking of when you hear the word canoe - it kind of reminded me of the fishing boats in Moana and really had the traditional Hawaiian vibe to it versus a basic tourist boat. This is probably due to the fact that this tour company is Hawaiian owned and operated! We were happy to be supporting the locals rather than a franchise. Anyway! The tour itself was incredibly and very well controlled. The crew was amazing and had a great sense of humor while still maintaining a high level of concern for safety of all passengers. The crew was very well organized in ensuring everyone had the proper gear as well as proper understanding of how to use it, and went above and beyond to make sure we all had a great time. It was only a matter of minutes before we saw manta rays along with other fish and bioluminescence. Before going on the tour I read the few lower rated reviews and I feel that it is worth mentioning that in all of those reviews, I saw the captain and crew working their hardest to eliminate any of the prior issues guests have had while also working hard to mitigate any new issues or bumps. This company really goes above and beyond to make sure everyone has a great time. We will definitely be using them when we are back in Kona and will recommend them to all of our friends. Our crew was a male captain, Kai, and another male crew member.

Hello! This review means a TON to us. Thank you so much for sharing your experience in great detail. Our captain and crew work very hard to roll with the elements of unpredictability in delays, emergencies, guest circumstances, safety considerations, ocean, and the volume of other boats and guests in the water. We don't always provide a flawless experience, but we still try tirelessly to do just that. Even through the tough days, we're constantly learning, evolving, and improving the way we do things and the experience we provide to your guests. Thank you for understanding that our team, and the adventures we provide, are not flawless. We will surely let the captain and crew know that you recognized and appreciated their hard work. We hope to see you again! Aloha - The Eka Ohana.

Captain Danielle and guide Cameron were both very friendly, knowledgeable and great guides. I had no idea how close the Mantas would get to us! Literally touching us! Amazing creatures, and wonderful experience.
The whole tour took an hour, but the canoe ride to the site is less than 10 minutes each way. The fun ride was unique in the sailing canoe. Your time in the water is just right -- we were seeing Mantas nearly the whole time. Cameron was very knowledgeable, telling us all about Mantas, and how gentle they are. Which is a good thing, considering they are so large, and come right up and do barrel rolls right next to you! Truly a highlight of our trip!
If folks don't want to get into the water, they can ride along at full price, which makes sense, since they are taking a regular seat in the canoe. Riders do get to see Mantas as they go under the canoe.
Logistics: really appreciated receiving a text the morning the trip with detailed directions. Also cool that Danielle called us just as we were driving into the harbor area to give us final parking directions!

Hello! Thank you for leaving us a detailed review! We appreciate the feedback. We've been working diligently to improve our wayfinding instructions since first-time visitors are expected to wander towards the pier in the dark with many other boats bustling about. We're glad you had a great time and felt that the time in the water was just right. We certainly try to strike that balance between satisfied and bored. Boredom is a quick way to sour any great experience!

This was my fourth trip to the Big Island in 18 months. With every trip, I have been struggling to overcome my fears in deep water. On our third trip, we were unable to do the manta dive because I had a horrible sunburn but this trip we vowed it would be different and I even convinced my cousin and her husband from San Francisco to come along. After losing her mom, my aunt, this past year, we are searching for things that bring us peace. Although this was beyond exciting and way beyond anything we have ever done before, we left feeling that sense of peace and a closeness that we needed and we could not thank you enough.
We waited at the dock, with a nice couple from New Zealand, that would take the boat out with us as it only seats six. Now, this boat is not just any boat, it is a Hawaiian sailing canoe and absolutely awesome. It puts you down close to the water and makes the experience that much more meaningful. Captain Chanda and Danielle were incredible. Both were very calm and easygoing, which is what I need because deep water and me have a thing and now we are here in deep water and at night so to say I was intimidated was putting it lightly. I was terrified but jumped right in and followed directions closely. Danielle worked so hard to find the mantas. I think all of the other boats must have given up but she kept at it and suddenly, someone saw a shadow and before we knew it, these enormous, magnificent creatures were literally right under us and swimming happily in a beautiful ballet. It was incredible and overwhelming and beautiful and breathtaking. I really don’t know how to put it into words that could rightfully explain how incredible it was. It changes you.
I know this seems to be rambling but if you are on the fence or questioning yourself on doing this, just do it. This was an incredible adventure with incredible people. You will not regret it.
Captain Chanda and Danielle, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You gave my cousin and I far more than you realize. My husband and I are looking to relocate permanently to the Big Island in the coming years and hope to use and recommend your company often. We hope to see you again very soon!! Thank so much!

My daughter and I had a GREAT time on this tour! It helps if you are already familiar with boats and snorkeling. We loved it! The captain and the guide were knowledgeable, fun, and helpful. The canoe was cool. We brought jackets for the boat ride back to the dock. We were impressed with the confident professionalism displayed by both the captain and the snorkeling guide, both kickass women working on and in the water. Both of their names started with a D, but I don't want to get it wrong, so I won't try to type in my guess! The snorkel guide actually dived down to the bottom and brought up a sea urchin for us to look at. That was memorable. The mantas are not to be missed if you want something fun to do. I definitely recommend this tour if you go to Kona and want to see the manta rays at night!

Aloha, Dawn! Thank you for leaving this thoughtful review! We agree, our ladies crew is pretty kickass! We're happy that you and your daughter had an amazing experience with us. You bring up a great point. On this tour, we ask that our guests have some knowledge of swimming and/or snorkeling so we can remain as safe as possible in the water at night. Manta Ray night snorkel experience was GREAT! Very exhilarating. I feel I had the best position at the end of the raft. Feeling as if the Manta Rays were coming up to swallow my face and then turn away. Graceful performances with other Rays. Authentic replica of a Double Hull Canoe was a nice experience with only a max of 12 onboard. Crew was extremely friendly, helpful and booked through Kona Coast Activities was less expensive than other tour companies. Brittany does an outstanding job promoting tour and speaking with guests prior to departure.

When planning our trip to Hawaii we chose the Big Island mainly to go on the manta ray snorkel. We also scheduled tours on our first two nights to make sure we saw it. We chose Eka Adventures because Keauho Bay Adventures runs through the Outrigger and they booked it for us - big mistake!! Everything else at the Outrigger was great (see my separate review). As we landed in Kona we were greeted with a voicemail from them saying our tour had been cancelled due to weather. I called every other tour I could find and they said they were completely booked and definitely running. At the OutRigger we had a room that looked onto the ocean and manta rays and could see all the boats going out there all night long and the ocean looked fine. The next day I kept checking to see if the tour was going. Last call was at 4:30pm and they said that the 6pm tour was definitely going. We got dressed in our wet suits, got our gear together4 and walked to the docks. All the other tours were getting everybody suited up and ready. We couldn't find *anybody* from Eka and finally get a call at 5:35pm saying they again had to cancel due to weather. They didn't even have the decency to come and tell us in person. At the same time I'm hearing all the different tours preparing their groups for the snorkel. I asked around and nobody again had room and were puzzled why Eka Adventures wasn't going. Once again we watched from our balcony as the other tours got out to the manta site - there were even a few kayaks out there. We wondered if we would be able to go at all during our trip. I spent that evening trying to get any manta ray tour booked and was finally able to get one on Sea Paradise and another on Sea Quest. They did go - read my reviews, but do not go with this company or you will be disappointed.

Must do adventure in Kona. Lots of manta rays to see up close and personal. The crew was amazing - Kalani, Danielle, and Chiaden and very helpful. The driver Kalani provided good commentary on manta rays as we went out to the site. Danielle was great - very calm and reassuring while we were in the water and very knowledgeable about the manta rays and even pointed out her favorite one Amanda. Eka uses a double hull canoe for the ride was amazing and much better than the other motor boats in the bay. Loved the adventure in the water and for us, it was a very small group experience given the size of the canoe. Certainly one of my top highlights of my visit to Kona!

We had a fantastic nighttime snorkeling adventure with the MANTA RAYS at Eka Canoe Adventures! Staff is friendly, extremely safety conscious, and conservators of the beautiful marine life and environment. The manta rays are poetry in motion as they gently swim by. My wife and I heartily recommend this once in a lifetime experience with Eka Canoe Adventures!

Idk how to swim. Would this be a problem? can i just stay on the boat instead?
Written 9 June 2022
i would. call and ask, you only had to swim out about 10 yards with a noodle between your legs them you hang onto a floating light bar. They may allow use of life jackets but I would check first. If you can make it work, I strongly recommend this, one of greatest things I’ve ever done.
