Itinerary
- 2nd Ave & Broadway, Skagway, AK 99840, USAMeet your driver at the NPS Visitor Center at 2nd & Broadway in town
- 1Your journey begins with an entertaining historic tour from your knowledgeable guide through downtown Skagway and along nine miles of stunning coastline to our Musher’s Camp™ in Dyea. Next, hop into our specialized unimog for an exciting ride up our rugged mountain road, surrounded by glacially fed streams and waterfalls. At the top, your musher will greet you with a custom-designed wheeled summertime sled and a team of very excited Alaskan Huskies! Feel the power of these strong dogs as they whisk you down a mile-long, zig-zagging trail deep in the Tongass National Rainforest! After meeting your dog team, climb back into your unimog and enjoy the adventurous ride to a breathtaking overlook of the Dyea tidal flats. Depending on the month you just might see eagles, bears, seals, horseback riders, wild flowers, and of course snow-capped mountains. Your unimog will then bring you to what we like to call a “Kennel Talk.” We have been sharing our passion for dog sledding for years, and in that time we have gathered up the most frequently ask questions about the sport. In the Kennel Talk, we will share the fascinating answers and welcome any additional questions you may have. Of course, we make sure you have plenty of time to play with our puppies! Your affections actually socialize these future athletes, which is essential to their racing success. A crackling fire and a unique gift shop round out your visit. All of this in a spectacular Alaskan setting!
About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- georwell0 contributionsGreat dog musher team visitPickup was well-organized and on time. Dylan was friendly and very knowledgable of the local area and pointed out various Juneau landmarks and history along the route. At the facility, Robert and Bone likewise were welcoming and eager to share their passion for the dogs and mushing with us. Their presentations on sledding and Iditarod history were informative and well done. Each member of the team fielded questions and shared his own stories and insights. The sled run was an absolute blast, and meeting/petting the adult dogs and holding/petting the puppies was an added highlight. Easy 5 stars from our group of 5.Written 9 September 2024
- Angela K0 contributionsGreat Sled Dog AdventureThis experience was exactly what I expected. It was at a dog camp in the middle of a beautiful forest. All of the staff were kind and informative. The dogs were all very friendly and sweet puppies, too! The only negative was that we were told to be at the meeting point 15 minutes early and they were a few minutes late because the driver said there was a mix up on where to pick us up (we went to the place we were directed to in our confirmation). Other than that, it was a great day!Written 8 September 2024
- robertlZ4319QR0 contributionsGreat tour / Great Great guides /Driver up to the zipline was very interactive and informative. Gave us some good info all the way. Our guides were super and we had a great time with them. Zipline was good and I'd recommend for anyone. Not super difficult but very fun and take time to look around and take in the beautiful mountain and surroundings which is an extra plus for this tour. Highly recommend this for all.Written 6 September 2024
- michaelmF526WP0 contributionsWe would do this again and again!Fantastic, it was the best of 4 excursions we went on, by far, in Alaska. Gabe and Parker were our guides. Both were fun. Parker has a great sense of humor and made the adventure even better. There were 6 people in our group, with youngest being 15 and the oldest 70. The majority of the group had experience in ziplining. My husband and I have never tried it before. They kept us smiling and laughing the whole time Gabe and Parker made all of us feel welcome and special, no matter the experience. The scenery was spectacular, with the river, trees and waterfalls. We all had a blast!Written 4 September 2024
- T4569EUnickg0 contributionsSkagway Ziplining Fun!I had a fantastic time ziplining in Skagway, AK! The views were stunning, and the course was a perfect mix of thrilling and scenic. Our guides, Parker and Linnea, were outstanding—they made the adventure safe, fun, and unforgettable. Parker’s energy and Linnea’s calm confidence were the perfect combination. Highly recommend this excursion if you're in Skagway, especially with Parker and Linnea leading the way!Written 1 September 2024
- Roving415214706790 contributionsFavorite experience of our Disney CruiseThis was by far our favorite excursion of our cruise. I took my 8 & 10 year old kiddos and was a bit worried one of them would be too scared to do it, but our guides Gabe and Luke were absolutely amazing and made my kiddos feel extremely safe. My 8 year old was doing trust falls and going upside down by the 3rd or 4th zip line. We had such a wonderful experience and I would absolutely visit Grizzly Falls Ziplining again. Thanks again to our awesome guides, Gabe and Luke!Written 31 August 2024

- ralphsM1031SQ0 contributionsPuppies galoreWhat a time! The trip in with Tim was one of a kind. Ask him questions, and he'll tell you so much about Juneau's history as he winds through the mountain trails. We then had Tyler, an up and coming musher, as our host, who was amazing. So enthusiastic and informative. The Mountain valley location is worth the price of admission. We've done this adventure twice, and would go again.Written 27 August 2024

The views to/from the camp were amazing and meeting and riding with these musher dogs was such a fun experience. The experience was very informative with learning the background of racing and how these beautiful dogs get to do their favorite activity...run! - AdagioTravel0 contributionsFun break from cruise life in the Alaska autback.Pros first: motivated young guides conducting a tour through true wilderness at the foot of Davidson Glacier. These guides live here with no running water or electricity for the 5 months of the year that they are leading tours … so this IS in fact wilderness. Guides was very funny and upbeat, and also well-informed. Comfortable boat ride to/from the cruise ship, with naturalist who pointed out wildlife along the way. We enjoyed putting on the rubber boots and life vests and the “soft hike” through the woods. Shout out to guide Lydia - she’s awesome! Now cons: the lunch was mediocre; the ride to/from the tour site is over an hour each way ... but that’s what we expected because a cruise ship by definition stops pretty far from the “wilderness”. We would have preferred the chance to actually use our oars on the canoes, rather than have them be powered by motors. We agree with the comment that the rocks at the base of the glacier were rather ordinary.Written 8 August 2024

Today's Alaskan cruise adventure took us to the dogs. We enjoyed an informative, fascinating day learning about dog sledding and its vital part of Alaskan life and history.
Linda was our jovial and friendly guide for our AlaskaX dog sledding experience. Her guided tour provided us with lots of interesting and colorful tales of Skagway’s early frontier days.
At the Musher Camp, our dog handler gave us lots of great information on how the dogs are trained, fed and groomed for the Iditarod in March. The dog sledding ride was thrilling to watch these incredible perform what they live and love to do best.
Getting to meet these beautiful, svelte dogs up close was a thrill. Petting them, you can feel all muscle. These incredible, athletic animals are superstars of the vast Alaskan wilderness.
And then it was puppy time! Oh gosh - week old puppies and a chance to hold, cuddle and snuggle them. We learned it’s important to begin socializing them ASAP. Definitely a highlight.
The ride up/down the steep mountain road was an adventure in itself in a rugged “unimog” vehicle. All-in-all, a wonderful, fun experience.

Grandparent and granddaughter enjoyed being immersed in the life of sled dogs. "Sledding" in a wheeled vehicle pulled by the dogs was exciting and fun. The transportation to the kennel was special too. The close contact with the dogs and the puppies, while learning how it all works, was the highlight. Well worth the time, money, and effort.

Therese was friendly, helpful, and extremely knowledgable. She spoke in great detail about the musher and dogs' experiences in preparation for the Iditarod as well as their experiences during the Iditarod. Therese also shared riveting personal stories- I could have listened to her for hours! Another highlight was meeting the dogs and having the opportunity to hold the puppies!! The dogs appeared healthy, well cared for, and excited to meet us. I highly recommend this excursion.

Far beyond expectations! This tour was unbelievable. The dogs were amazing to see in action and I cannot say enough good things about every single person that we interacted with on the tour. Our bus driver/guide Rose gave us all the best pointers in town and now only did she drive us to the dog camp but she gave us a thorough history of Skagway on the way. A pirate story, the beauty of the land and everything. She was the best guide we had on any excursion on our vacation.

This tour is very well run, it never felt crowded even though they were very busy. The staff were very professional and knowledgeable. It was very interesting to learn the history of sled dogs and their role with humans. Riding behind the dogs on a "sled" was amazing to see how the dogs interacted with other dogs and their trainer. Of course, petting puppies is always great, but the rest of the tour was equally excellent.

We had a fabulous time, from the minute we were picked up to being dropped back at the cruise ship. Our driver Rose was informative and funny. She had a wicked sense of humour. The dogs were wonderful, hard-working and lovable. Our sled driver Sarah handled them well and gave us a personal introduction to them at the end of the 6 person cart ride. Seeing the 2 week old puppies and getting to hold one touched the heart.
Also the store was a husky lovers dream, at a reasonable price.
Thank you Rose, Sarah and Alaska X for the experience.

This is what I call a 3 in 1 tour. First you get to ride a bus that takes you around beautiful views of the Alaska forest with a guide that narrates about the history of the place. We even saw a black bear on our way and the driver even stop for us to see it and take pictures. Then when you arrived to the camp you ride a monster truck that takes you up where the dogs are. Where you get to ride the dog sled. Then you get to pet the dogs and go back in the monster truck that then stop in a beautiful view where you can take pictures. And last but not least you can go where the puppies are and pet them as well.

We booked this excursion through our cruise line. It was my 9-year-old's favorite excursion in Alaska. The ride from the cruise pier up to Musher's Camp was fully narrated and beautiful. The "monster truck" we took up the mountain was amazing. We enjoyed a dogsled ride and then go to meet the dogs before heading back to camp. My son enjoyed petting the dogs and learned about their "personalities" from the musher. Back at camp, there was an interesting lesson about the dogs and the races that they compete in. Overall, a fun way to learn about the Alaskan state sport.

We thoroughly enjoyed the dog sled & musher's camp excursion we did this fall. Garrett was a great tour guide who so many interesting facts both relating to the dogs and about the area in general, and Maddie's presentation was fantastic! We loved getting to ride behind the older dogs and then loving on the puppies. We never felt rushed and had time to enjoy everything.

We met our driver Rose at the pier and she gave us information about Skagway on our drive to the musher’s camp. We had 24 people total for our excursion. Once we arrived we drove up the mountain in a MOG. Jake was our guide but he didn’t really tell us much but we rode up front so maybe we missed any stories.
Wishing we would have had our kids because we were the only couple who didn’t have any. I think this is a good kid event.
After we were done with the sledding we headed back down to meet puppies. I didn’t get to hold any guessing because they were mostly letting the kids in our group hold them. I felt a little out of place but guessing if I would have asked they would have let me hold one. It was rainy the day of our trip so the sled dogs were wet but we did get to meet most of them.

I booked the 2 pm tour on June 27 . My ship departs at 7pm. I believe the ship will stay on Seattle time. So that would be 6 pm Alaska time. Will we be back in time?

We are taking the 10 am tour on 6/19. Do you know of any 1/2 day Yukon tours available? It seems the ones I found leave at 12:30 and we won’t be back yet. Will we be at port by 1:30??

Do the dogs actually pull a sled on wheels as opposed to a motorized ATV where they simply run in front? Thank you!

NO it is not a sled but an oversize golf cart with wheels with seats for 6

Good Afternoon,
I'm will be traveling on 7/31 and am wondering if it is just my niece who is 16 and myself that is 32, if that would cause a problem since she is not over 18? Her mother would be able to sign any waivers or liability forms as she will be on the cruise with us just on a different excursion. Thanks!
Written 5 July 2019
I don't think it will be a problem as there were definitely children younger than 16 when we went there.

We will be on shore on 7/31, but had booked a half day train tour in the morning. Wondering if we can do a half day sled tour in the afternoon for 6 adults and 1 8yrs old?
Written 23 June 2019
Sure, but as mentioned above, it really depends on when the ship is departing. If it doesn't leave Skagway til later that evening, I'd say go for it. It was a fun experience.

We are planning our trip between May 12-19. Will this tour be available then? My son is 2 years old. Will this activity be suitable?
Written 16 April 2019
The you tube video states you are pulled over a one mile trail so I would expect it to be a relatively short ride with the dogs at most 15 minutes on the ride. Then you have time with the dogs and learn more about the sport and their training.

Hi, we will be in Skagway on May 20th. I realized that most of the visitors are there around June, July, August and September. We are there just as summer is starting and wondering if it is a conducive time for this adventure. Is there anything we need to prepare for, weather-wise. Will it be be rainy will the terrain be navigable, and what's the average temperature this time of the year. Thanks.
Written 26 February 2019
We visited in August 2018 and it was very rainy so effective waterproofs are essential. Without a doubt, the trip was the hi-light of our trip to Canada and Alaska though. A really hands-on experience and lots of opportunity to be with the dogs on the sled ride. And of course, the puppies were just beautiful.
