- paulhedley4c0 contributionsWinter City TourThe experience was rewarding, albeit more verbally detailed than visual. The driver / escort was brilliant and kept everyone on their toes and happy throughout the three hour trip. For a first time visit, the experience was worthwhile.Written 23 January 2025
- mach1qc0 contributionsPoor customer careUnfortunately I was the only one booked on an activity. I was left waiting in the hotel lobby until I called them to be informed that the activity was cancelled. I think that if one company would care about its customers, there should be a protocol in place to advise them that the activity is cancelled. So I lost one activity day in my short visit to Anchorage. People are not only dollars bills....please take great care of your customers. BERTRAND LAVALLÉEWritten 9 December 2024

We took the trolley tour in Anchorage. The driver was quite informative and humorous. The tour gave a great overview of the city and helped us see that the city is quite walkable. The $45 cost was worth it. The free visitor center at the start/stop is worth visiting; you get a free stamp for your postcard. Also, if Rick(??) is there, ask to see his money collection from around the world. Ever see folding money from North Korea?
BTW: We ate lunch at 49th State Brewery downtown and can highly recommend its food and brews. The Bavarian pretzel is one the best ever, including Germany! The views are really nice too. 49th State also has restaurant in the airport, but with limited menu and it isn't nearly as charming.

April Bielefeldt planned a great trip to Alaska including a trolley ride around Anchorage to hear about the history of the city. The whole trip was amazing seeing bears, sheep and other animals in Denali National Park and the wildlife center. She has other trips planned for 2023 and 2024. She also will help you make an itinerary for a trip you want to take at her website. I recommend her as a great tour guide!

Fun tour of the Anchorage area. Our driver was informative and happily answered all questions. We were very impressed when he pulled over shortly after leaving the boarding area to tell a rowdy Japanese family he'll be glad to take them back and give them a full refund if they choose NOT to keep their boisterous, screaming kids quiet (they were just as rowdy before they ever got on the trolley, too). They were making it hard for everyone else to hear the narration, and we really appreciated him addressing it so swiftly and effectively. Hardly heard a peep out of them thereafter. It was a fun little tour, though we had already seen some of the area on our bike ride the previous day. At $38 per person for a 1-hour trip, it seems rather pricey, though. There could have been a few more things to see and tell stories about, like the park that was a former Nike missile launch center, but overall it was a nice way to spend some time before needing to get some dinner.

The tour guide was the worst!! He spent half his time telling long winded stories about his misguided youth, ex girlfriend, his wife, a pilot who took him up in a plane when she shouldn't. It went on, and on. I also thought he was disrespectful to one young man on the tour who is a pilot for the armed forces. He kept calling him 'fly boy' and 'challenging' him with ridiculous questions.
The historical information he provided about Anchorage and Alaska was interesting, but essentially the tour would have been just over an hour if he'd just stuck to the facts.

Our tour lasted 50 minutes and not an hour as advertised. There was little of interest to see and the trolley bus windows were too small to take a decent photo through. If we had used the extra 10 minutes maybe we could have got out to take photos. The commentary was rushed and it sounded like the driver was bored with repeating it day after day. At $50 USD for a couple I would say it was a waste of money.

I’m a local here yet wanted to experience an Anchorage tour. I often see the red trolleys and have been curious as to what they share with their riders. This tour did not disappoint. Joanie was an excellent guide with a good sense of humor. I was impressed with her ability to tell (historical) story after story all while navigating traffic perfectly. I was pleasantly surprised with the route and all that Joanie shared with us. I had two other locals with me and we all agreed this is a tour we’d recommend to our family/friends who travel up here.

My wife and I stayed at the local Marriott and the bartender recommended this tour for us to do during the day while killing time before our evening flight. It was easy to find next to the little tourism welcome center and we were able to buy tickets there and hop right on. Our guide was excellent, she was part of the family who started the tour and she both drove the trolley and provided the information and told stories. The tour took a little less than an hour and gave some good facts about the town and way of life and also took you to a few places you can't walk to so was good transportation as well. For this tour we did not get off the trolley. It was raining though and it was hard to regulate the trolley as the windows could slide open but you get wet and it you didn't they fog up so pictures are worthless. Definitely would recommend as a fun little tour.

A fabulous day with the delightful McCarreys, knowledgeable, well spoken and fun, full of great anecdotes and stories of their beautiful Alaska. The stops all along the route were well timed and very interesting. The trolley itself was well maintained, clean and comfortable. Donna is an excellent driver, and kept her narrative flowing with humor and interesting intriguing details and facts. There were 8 of us in our party on this tour and we unanimously voted to go with McCarreys again! We all highly recommend this adventure with Anchorage City Trolley Tours and Donna/David McCarrey. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour.

We only had 24 hours in Anchorage so thought that this was the best way to get a look at the city. There was only a 1 hour loop tour option no hop on hop off, but we were happy to do this then have time to go back and visit anywhere that stood out. The drive gave commentary as we drove down mainstreet then took a turn towards the Alaska Railroad building, after this we seemed to drive out of the city centre and into the suburbs which wasnt what we were expecting. We drove through an area of housing with the driver pointing out one or 2 interesting properties and his own house then we went to an area that was affected by the earthquake that hit the city in the 60s. After this we drove out to the lake near the airport where the seaplanes park up and take off. That was pretty much the full tour as after this we headed back into what we considered the city centre.
I dont know what we expected, maybe more of the central city area, but after getting off the trolley and walking around for a while we felt that there is not much to Anchorage and in fact the trolley tour had showed us the best of what it has to offer.
Glad to have ticked the city off the bucket list for what will always remain a memorable experience.

Our tour guide, Alice, was incredibly good. She was funny, entertaining, and easily kept everyone’s interest with stories and facts. The trolley tour is short, but hits many highlights in Anchorage and explains history and facts well. Recommend as a first tour of Anchorage to get a feel for the city and get ideas for future tours and locations to visit. Highly recommended.

I wanted to book ahead but didn't, and it wasn't an issue. They had plenty of availability. It's a great tour. We saw a moose out by the airport and float planes. Hope you have the same luck.

I saw somewhere that there is a longer tour for approx. $30. How can I book one of those?

Is it advisable to book ahead of time? What if our plane is late?

No need even though the buses are mostly full for most runs. The trolley runs all day on the half hour. We could have gotten on a ride at any time. We missed one and got a reserved seat for the next bus . We missed that one and walked up and got on another two hours later.
