At LAVA Centre is a high-tech, interactive volcano and earthquake exhibition. It is the most awarded exhibition in Iceland. It tells the story of Iceland and explains why it is so active. It goes into details on the different volcanoes and types of volcanoes. A replica of the hot spot under Iceland (Magma plume) and a earthquake simulator will make your hair to rise. A movie about all the most recent eruption and a beautiful observation deck round up an experience not to be missed. LAVA Centre is right at the main road going east from Reykjavík and is the gateway to the South Coast and the Katla Geoopark.

Worth a Visit if in South west Iceland
Included as part of our tour. Gives the development of Iceland from the confluence of the North American and European plates.A brief film provides the background of the violent development of the island via volcanos and lava flows. Another room depicts the growth of the island and corresponding glaciers thru millennium. The final room recreates an earth quake via a large plate on the floor that vibrates with a corresponding sound track.

Don't drive past the LAVA Center
Other than the Perlan, I don’t think there’s a finer museum in Iceland than the LAVA Center in Hvolsvolluron, about a half-hour past Selfoss on the early part of the South Coast road. It's spendy, even for Iceland, but as others have said here, the Center provides great context for Iceland’s geology and for what you’ll see throughout your visit. The exhibits are interactive and educational, and if the weather is clear, the observation deck provides a great view of some of the nearby volcanoes and the impacts they’ve had on the land.

High tech & interactive but expensive
This place was very high tech with the mantle plume and a place where you stand and feel an earthquake. There were 3 areas to see: a movie in the planetarium, the volcano exhibits which had the mantle plume and info about volcanoes, and an observation deck where you can see the volcanoes surrounding the area. Everything was very well done and interesting. However we paid $50 for 2 people for less than a half hour which was very disappointing. I know it costs a lot of money to create these high tech exhibits so I understand that, but still overpriced. There is a gift store, I think 66 North or IceWear. Observation deck was cool. We drove here and didn't go on a tour.

Immersive and very informative - must do for context before exploring the surroundings!
We were travelling around Iceland on our own and visited the museum before adventuring closer to many of the volcanoes. The exhibit and film really helped us to understand the context of the area and Iceland's volcanic history - past, present, and future - especially the details that we weren't previously familiar with. The exhibit is very interactive and engaging to learn about the different types of volcanoes and magma/lava flows. We were surprised that it was not only interactive but somewhat immersive by incorporating multiple senses into the experience. We spent about 75 minutes to watch the film and wander through the exhibit rooms, reading most of the information available. We chose to do the viewing platform last, which helped to incorporate the information from the exhibit into the surroundings. We would recommend stopping here and taking your time to learn about Iceland's volcanoes past, present, and future.

Excellent Context for Iceland's Geology and Volcanos
We were staying in Hella, and visited the museum early on in our trip, which was a great choice, because it gave us the context for Iceland's geology and volcanic history before we saw it up close and personal. We learned about the different types of volcanos and lava flows with very effective and interactive exhibits. The sights, sounds and information were top-notch. We spent an hour there, but could have probably spent another 30-40 minutes if we had more time. If you are in the Hella are or touring the South Coast, I would recommend stopping here.

So good! Really unassuming from the front but the interactive exhibits and up to the minute updates on the active volcanoes was amazing

      Go to Perlan Instead
For £60, this was very overpriced and uninformative. Earthquake simulator was awful. Would not recommend unless you want an expensive pit stop, I would just continue driving in hindsight

Great exhibition on why Iceland has so much thermal activity
Cool film footage combined with an interactive experience that explains how Iceland formed and why it continues to be so active.

      Lava Center worthwhile
Expensive but good museum. We were staying near Hvollsvollur and decided to stop in. We just missed a bus full of school children and there were hardly any other people while we were there. I think the emptiness added to our experience. It's been a while since I learned about volcanoes. Fascinating facts about the various eruptions in Iceland. A very nice gift shop.

Learn all about volcanoes and earthquakes
Interesting and informative museum on the science and history of earthquakes and volcanoes. You can stand on disks in the museum and experience different types of earthquakes. Well worth a visit. The cafe was closed when we were there but there are outside picnic tables and a small shop selling snacks in the nearby filling station.

      Very cool!
Highly recommend all exhibits. Roof top viewing center was excellent but we had a nice clear morning. Movie was super informative and the walkthrough history was neat. Love the tracking of the earthquakes in the last 48 hours.

      Great visual
Worth a visit if you are in the area. Stunning visuals and fun interactive educational parts. Only thing is that the website stated you would see molten lava created there, but that's not true. Also, cafe is shut over winter season.

      Great experience and hospitality
Maria was super helpful giving my five and seven year old a guided tour when we came in late in the day. The experience is well worth the price. And my daughter learned a lot and stay engaged. Reserve at least an hour. exhibition experience is likely too intense for five year olds.

What a great little place just off the main southern coastal highway. We stopped over whilst driving from Hveragerdi towards the Hnappavellir on a rainy day.

The reception staff were fabulous explaining what was on offer in perfect English (putting us monolinguists to shame). The exhibits were all interactive and with simple explanations in Icelandic and English. There was very little spoken word and this was so well done. Pictures do tell a story that a thousand words would find it hard to convey. Really educational and a real insight into the formation and wonders of the island. Not only for geologists, kids would love the interactive nature and audiovisual aspects.

Costs us about 25 Euros each, which for Iceland didn't seem unreasonable. Well worth a visit if passing. They even gave us a free coffee as the cafe was closed. Thanks.

The good part: Very well done displays including a multi-story magma plume beneath Iceland....really great visual! Very good interactive displays with lots of information and framing for the geologic history and current activity of Iceland. This museum had the best displays of the museums we visited in Iceland.

The bad part: The video is very disappointing. There isn't narration or educational comments about the eruptions you are viewing. It's just a bunch of clips put together.
The other downside is it is poor value. It is 4000 krona per person (about $28 US/person) which is excessive for the size of the museum and the quality of the film.

The café was closed but had a pitcher of free water sitting out. The bathrooms were clean.

We came on a Sunday, where not too many people were around. Hence, the friendly guy at reception had a little time to talk to us and answer all of our questions and even help us out with navigation to our further destinations on that day.

The film was without speech, which was perfect since my dad doesn't speak any English (or Icelandic for that matter) and could enjoy it without me having to translate everything. The exhebition was very up to date and we enjoyed the interactive experience. Also, we visited on a day where the weather was pretty good for winter in Iceland and could take some awesome pictures from the roof of the building. We thought it was a great experience all around, especially since some things were not working out for winter during our trip - and this was something that we were very happy to do.

Thank you so very much for a wonderful experience!

We visited the museam during our ring road tour. Having seen the recent volcano eruptions wanted to find out more about the volcanos in Iceland. The entrance fee was very expensive...£86 for 2 adults 1 child and a student. The museam did have some interesting exhibitions but there was not a lot to see and after watching the video we had seen it all in half an hour. There are better museams in Iceland especially if you are on a budget.

We went to the Lava Centre in mid-July and found it to be one of the most informative museums we've ever visited. The interactive structure of the exhibits only added to the experience and enhanced our learning. We were impressed that the information had already been updated for the 2021 eruption of Fagradalsfjall as part of the ongoing story of Iceland's volcanic eruptions. Jorge was incredibly helpful and informative, giving guidance on what to visit, book recommendations, and sharing his experiences as a geologist. It was one of the highlights of the whole trip. Thanks, Jorge! -Your friends from Philly

An interesting museum with interactive exhibits explaining the formation of lava, and types of lava found in Iceland. There's also a short (silent) film at the end going over the main eruptions that have taken place in Iceland in the past few years. My husband and I enjoyed it - it's not just for kids, although there were a lot of kids, and they seemed to have a good time.
Advised to spend an hour during a bad weather day.

An informative and very up to date exhibition (covers the current 2021 volcanic eruption) about the volcanic history of Iceland, the types of volcano's and the different lava produced. The exhibition covers all the major eruptions that have occurred including the current one in the Reykjanes peninsula.

A good place to visit on a wet and windy day. The day we came the restaurant was still closed due to Covid restrictions but you could get coffees.

Like the title says... Go here. It's a lot of background information about volcanic systems of Iceland. How active they are and how it works. You can touch everything inside as well (except other visitors...) next to that there is an impressive movie that shows the last couple of eruptions of Icelands volcanos. Just go... Oh and a big thanks to the guy in front that took his time to explain what we were going to see! Awesome place!

Best museum in Iceland 🇮🇸🌋 Do not miss the Lava Center! We almost did not go and I am so glad we didn’t! I am a geologist and the exhibit was incredible, accurate, up to date, interactive, and impressive! There is information about past eruptions in Iceland, how the island formed, a beautiful display of the magma plume below Iceland, a room with all different rock types across Iceland you can touch and examine, and interactive displays you can see short clips of all different types of volcanic eruptions. The 3D cube room makes you feel like you’re in the Iceland countryside looking at erupting volcanoes. They have earthquakes simulations and so much more. Endless wonder. Its really special if you like lava, earthquakes, plate tectonics. The video in the cinema is well made - about 20 minutes showing some footage from previous eruptions. The center has a really nice gift shop with lava jewelry, candles, and all sorts of Icelandic souvenirs. The staff was really nice and helpful too, I really can’t say enough good things. Worth the drive. Do not miss the Lava Center

Outstanding video and exhibit on the volcanoes of Iceland as well as how volcanic activity occurs in general. The footage of all the eruptions in Iceland since film-making existed is powerful. That video and a walk through the first section of the exhibit gives one an understanding of how unique Iceland is and what it must mean to live in an active volcano zone. I have seen exhibits on volcanic activity in Yellowstone and Hawaii, but this exhibit is head and shoulders above anything I have seen before.
