About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- knowsnyc0 contributionsMany stops downtown walking on a private tour with EmilyI knew we were coming to Richmond and researched walking tours online. I wrote to two providers and heard back only from one: Raymond of Richmond Tour Guides. Since no public tours were scheduled for the season of our visit, we were offered a private tour. Although I am usually too cheap (frugal?) to say yes, I did. And I am glad I did. Raymond was excellent about communication prior to our tour. He assigned Emily, a former social studies teacher and lifelong Richmonder, to guide us. She was wonderful. We spent 2 1/2 hours seeing more sites than weever would have found on our own. We spent no time getting lost, which we would have done on our own. And learned more than we could have by reading online. Plus we could ask Emily questions. This cost about the same as one night in a hotel so consider shortening your stay to take such a tour!Written 26 December 2024
- marshajwilson0 contributionsNuance and Backstory beyond the Basics of Richmond's HistoryWe did this tour on a Friday am so it was quite nice, small group with opportunity to ask questions of our tour guide. She brought a rich history to the walk, in that she had three generations of family in the area, and she was a social studies teacher. I loved the stories and details that brought a city with such an important role in so many aspects of our nation's history to life. I would highly recommend this tour not only to those visiting the area, but to residents who may not have been here their whole life. It is a cultural experience not to be missed.Written 30 August 2024
- G6357IZscottn0 contributionsGreat Tour of Church Hill RichmondWe really enjoyed the tour. The headphones were a big plus so you could always hear. Our guide had lived in the neighborhood in the past so had a lot of great insight. Highly recommended.Written 18 June 2024

- Elsa M0 contributionsNot worth the time or $This tour covers very little to see or learn. As such, the guide just drones on to fill time. We do a lot of walking tours to learn about the cities we visit... this is the first one I am leaving a bad review to include what we saw and the guide.Written 11 May 2024
- arubarich10 contributionsFabulous car tour of historic Richmond. We took a fabulous 2 hour driving tour of historic Richmond, led by our host Ray. He was incredibly knowledgeable and entertaining. He provides a lot of historical information and puts it into a modern context. If you are interested in learning about the role Richmond played in US history, as well as the role of the people that led it, then this tour is for you.Written 5 April 2024
- N5994HIjoanna0 contributionsCustom tour of RichmondIt was a brisk, cool day in Richmond but Ray didn’t let that stop us. He went out of his way to make the history of Virginia and the great city of Richmond come alive. The time went by very fast and Ray left us with great possibilities for future visits. I would highly recommend this service.Written 5 April 2024
- SouthernTravel0 contributionsRay makes Richmond's history come alive with fascinating detailsAfter reading reviews, and talking to the concierge at the Jefferson Hotel, we called the Richmond Tour Guys. There is a reason why they have earned so many five star reviews, and have such a great reputation - They are Excellent. Our guide for a fabulous three hours was Ray. Ray makes the history of Richmond come alive, he has the ability to share the fascinating stories that make each location come alive with interesting details. We're history lovers, and part of the family lives just north of Richmond; yet, we learned so much. Ray is a fascinating guide who loves to share the history that you don't always find in books, or on the net. A wonderful afternoon with Ray, we came away a much richer appreciation of the history of Richmond. And, yes, we are already planning our next visit to Richmond, and of course, we will book another tour with Ray.Written 28 December 2023
- DayTrip066242045950 contributionsRichmond Driving TourOur tour of Richmond with Ray Kaufman was 5-star in every way. From Jackson Ward to VCU to Church Hill, Ray gave us a running commentary covering interesting historical facts and added fascinating stories he'd dug out of archives. With Ray at the wheel of our double cab pickup truck, the five of us glided seamlessly from one site to another. Delivered in Ray's calm warm voice, our tour was most informative and relaxing and worth taking again.Written 7 December 2023
- T7689VSjanicet0 contributionsChirch Hill TourWe took the Church Hill Public Tour. Ray was very friendly and knowledgeable. The tour moved at a comfortable pace. He was able to answer questions and offered additional information. You can tell that he enjoys what he does. I had some questions about the tour ahead of time and he contacted me and answered them quickly. I grew up on Church Hill in the 1950's (Not the part that we toured) and I learned a lot.Written 1 December 2023
- danandtracey510 contributionsAmazing and captivating tourThe walking tour was amazing! Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and we thoroughly enjoyed our tour. The neighborhood we walked was beautiful and filled with architecture from various periods and styles. Kathy filled us in on the history of various structures and stopped at points with amazing views of the city and river.Written 6 November 2023
- 899joaniea0 contributionsGreat Tour By VanRay picked us up at hotel and 13 of us loaded ourselves in his comfortable van. Ray shared his extensive knowledge of Richmond’s history as we toured, pulling over at various locations to go into detail. We got out at St. John’s Church, which gave us a chance to stretch our legs and learn more about George Wythe and others who are buried in the graveyard.Written 3 November 2023
- Scenic160024134850 contributionsRay Has Storytelling Chops!Ray — funny, knowledgeable, organized, punctual, and outgoing — gave 13 college friends an amazing tour of RVA via van! We viewed historic Jackson Ward, known as "Black Wall Street"; the houses of John Marshall, Mann Valentine, and Jefferson Davis; MCV and Monumental Church; St. John's Church, where we walked around the graveyard; and many other interesting sites. Thank you, Ray, for all the interesting stories! I'll be back with more friends!Written 3 November 2023

- joelrD7026OR0 contributionsExcellent learning experienceErin was our tour guide and was great. She was very knowledgeable and friendly. We took the downtown tour. The pace was just right and we got to see and hear about Richmond's history. The tour ended right at the Capitol building which was great because we were planning on touring the Capitol next anyway. This is definitely a tour that needs to be taken whether you are from out of town or live in the city.Written 30 October 2023

We met our tour guide, Doug, at the appointed time and place. Some others had issues with the headsets but ours were fine. We toured several different sites in downtown Richmond. Doug was a very good speaker and pointed out different things along the route that made it more interesting. We had taken a tour of the Confederate White House a few days before. On Doug’s tour of the area, he pointed out a ‘Witness Tree’. I always find those to be very interesting. When we reached the official last stop, he asked if anyone was pressed for time as he had 2 more points of interest. We had nothing else planned so went along. The last stop was the home of Robert E. Lee’s wife during the war and where he went after the surrender. Very interesting and moving story about his stay there. Tour was very interesting and informative. Route is very walkable with no uncomfortable inclines. We even stopped halfway through for a restroom break. I’d recommend this tour if you want to know more about the City of Richmond than just its role in the Civil War.

Enjoyed my walking tour with Doug. It was a leisurely walk around downtown with a headset. He provided quite a bit of information about the city's history and how it became the city it is today. With added interesting tidbits along the way, it was a wonderful introduction to Richmond. Highly recommend!

April 1 is the first day of Richmond Tour Guys’ 2023 season. My guide Kathy was fantastic. Although I have visited Richmond several times, I really didn’t know much about the historic-homes-turned-museums, Theatre Row, or Capitol Square. Kathy kept us moving to see more than a dozen venues, including the monument to women achievers, the Egyptian building (now university building), Governor’s Mansion, State House, two National Historic Register sites, and Capitol Square. It was a whirlwind. I learned so much. Even though it was raining, Kathy stayed upbeat. I can’t wait to visit Richmond and take another tour with this company.

Our tour guide, Erin, was not only knowledgeable but also accommodating to everyone who was part of our group. A child was part of the group we joined, and she made sure they understood the meaning of the words she used while describing the places we visited. I will ask for her to be my tour guide the next time I use this company's services, and I strongly recommend people do the same, especially if a child forms part of the group.

Kathy was a great tour guide she provided a great mix of the good, bad and the ugly of Richmond’s checkered past, and since we wanted to know about the African American history too, she made sure to highlight their accomplishments and contributions to the city’s growth and prosperity. We had our four year old daughter and we appreciated her patience as she can be a handful, especially in the heat. This tour really did help us understand the history and see first hand how Richmond became the Richmond we see today. Thank you and I highly recommend her and the tour.

My parents were visiting from Boston and I wanted to show them around Richmond a bit. Ray did a great job on our tour sharing really interesting history about the city. He was very knowledgeable and I learned a lot about the history of some buildings I had driven by but not understood significance of. Enjoyed it!

Our family met in Richmond for a destination Thanksgiving and the absolute highlight of the four days was spending TG morning with Jeff, walking around downtown Richmond learning about the rich history and hearing anecdotal tidbits that brought history to life. He is a brilliant historian and gifted story teller, having many years of practice as a history teacher and professor. His depth of knowledge is astonishing and he captured and held our attention, answering our many questions.
We have lived overseas and taken many tours around the world, but Jeff's was by far the most engaging and informative of the lot. We plan to return and sign up for another tour in the spring. Thank you, Jeff!

I was visiting Richmond for the first time and wanted to have a tour of downtown to learn an overview of the history and get the 'lay of the land'. Jeff was the guide and was very knowledgeable about the history, the buildings, and current issues. He was friendly and was able to answer all my questions. Loved seeing so many murals! I hope I can return sometime and would like to take another tour. It was well worth the price!

Our guide was Jeff and he was amazing. Very knowledgeable and given in great story format so vividly. I don't think he was even trying to be funny but I found him very engaging and entertaining just because his stories were so vivid and connected to our current societal norms.

My family and I booked the historical downtown tour and had a terrific time. Ray was a pro. He really knows Richmond and its history. It was great to get out and walk and really see old Richmond. These beautiful old buildings can get lost in the shadow of the VCU campus; Ray made sure we saw them.
Thanks Ray! Highly recommend these tours!
