About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- SnowWhiteDar0 contributionsA great time that leave you so full you need a nap, with some history that I can guarantee most of us don't know.I reached out before the tour to inform them that I was vegetarian and severely allergic to cinnamon. They reached out to the vendor not only about weather the dishes we would receive would have cinnamon but if there was a risk of cross contamination (which is something I have never had asked on a food tour before). Our guide, Joy, was amazing! She was engaging and friendly! The bakery did, in fact, have a risk of cross contamination, so she went and bought me a separate dessert from a different place. The history was amazing, and overall, we had an amazing time!Written 6 September 2024
- 230raynas0 contributionsBest Food Tour in Atlanta!!I had an amazing time on the food tour with Unexpected Atlanta! All of the food tastings were delicious, and I loved learning about the rich history behind the market and the dishes we tried. The tour was well-organized and informative, and I appreciated how they highlighted and supported small business owners along the way. It’s a fantastic way to experience local flavors while learning more about the community. Highly recommend!Written 5 September 2024
- Justine M0 contributionsExcellent Market Tour / Biscuit ClassGreat way to beat the heat in August in Atlanta while getting to learn about one of Atlanta’s oldest markets. Arielle balanced telling us about the food, history, and running us through the biscuit making well and it was great to learn about a market in Atlanta that people I know who live here don’t even know about. They were able to accommodate me even though I don’t eat dairy. Highly recommendWritten 31 August 2024
- Dare_09210 contributionsMunicipal MarketThe biscuit making was the best part and learning about the history of food. It was also nice to walk around and see what food stands had fresh food and meats. Our tour guide Javier was the best!Written 29 August 2024

- Lasseter42420 contributionsGreat food and super guide. We went on this very informative tour and the guide, Joy, did a remarkable job. She was friendly, knowledgeable and the food was great. And, we didn't have to walk too far since the 3 restaurants were all in a small area. The cemetery was extremely interesting and Joy did a good job of speaking about the various areas or the cemetery and the folks buried there. Thanks Joy for a great tour.Written 26 August 2024

Joy was an amazing guide, and she made the experience incredible. Even though we are "locals" in the ATL Metro, it was incredible to get to know a part of the city that we had not experienced. The food we sampled was awesome, and we look forward to going back to try more food. The biscuit class was fun, and my wife loved watching me actually bake something. Our family of four loved this tour! Our guide, Joy, was amazing - passionate, engaging, and insightful. She was so well informed not just about Dr. King but about others from Atlanta who played a key role in the civil rights movement. Joy brought this history to life with her great stories, her enthusiasm and her portable multi-media clips. This was the highlight of our trip to Atlanta. Highly recommended. Thank you Joy!

Emily was very informative! I loved the way she told the story and how she seemed so enthused to be doing so! She made everyone on the tour comfortable and seems to know a lot of people that live in the neighborhood (which is great as they all spoke to her). My husband was very impressed with the information, as this was an eye opener for him. He was glad that I suggested we did this tour because he learned a lot of details that transpired before his time. I highly recommend this tour to those visiting Atlanta and to those that already live in Atlanta as you learn something new everyday!

Thank you for your review! I'm so glad you and your husband valued our history walking tour. Emily cares a lot about her relationships with the people of the Old Fourth Ward and I know would appreciate you mentioning it. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about Atlanta's civil rights history.

The MLK walking tour was AMAZING and I have to give all the credit to Joy, our guide. The tour itself was a few hours of non strenuous walking through the historic Old Fourth Ward neighborhood- it allowed me to experience the history in a better way than riding a bus or in a car would be. You make stops along the walk to discuss different people in history that made Atlanta, and the world, a better place. Joy brings along a flip book of the people she’s discussing. So, it’s not just a stop, “look at this building” and walk away to the next kind of thing. It’s a stop, “look at this historic building and let me show you the face of the person I’m telling you about” kind of thing. It was integrated to give it more of a personal feel. She also has an iPad she brings out at different points to play historic clips or speeches, which gave me chills, and made me really feel in the moment. It was just “different” in a GOOD way, than other tours I’ve been on. I can’t recommend this walking tour enough!

This tour was amazing. I really learned about the culture, neighborhood. and history of Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights movement. Nothing happens in a vacuum and the tour explained the environment and context that gave birth to the civil rights movement suggesting there still may be hope for us, yet!

I’ve taken guided tours across the US and Europe and I honestly have to say that the tour that Emily delivered through the King Historic District was probably the best. She was funny, informative, and honest...a quality that’s often missing in tours that gloss over the hardships that are the real history. Just amazing and I look forward to another visit and a chance to see what else Emily and this company will deliver.

I am glad I took the tour. Zoe was a knowledgeable and engaging guide. The itinerary was well thought-out. The tour company and guide did a good job in distilling highlights from a voluminous history while maintaining historical accuracy. The walking was moderate pace, with a break to get water and restrooms as needed. After the tour, if it is open, I recommend walking over to the historic Municipal Market (Sweet Auburn Market), which has several restaurant stalls.

Emily, our tour guide was a great storyteller. She didn't just give a very detailed account about the life of MLK and the civil rights movement but also an entertaining and immersive story like how he first encountered racism at 6 years old when he could no longer play with his white childhood friends, how a highway was intentionally built in the middle of Auburn street ( once the richest black owned street in the world) to disenfranchise black people, how he never lost a game of monopoly by cheating, how coretta wasn't at first attracted to him because of his height . I learnt so much in 2 hours than i learnt in school. HIghly recommend his tour.!!!

Wow! Where do I begin? This tour exceeded my expectations for our group of young local teens. Emily was was engaging, funny, and brought to life the excitement and struggles of living in Sweet Auburn. She highlighted our local heroes, the rich and beautiful civil rights legacy of Atlanta, with unique touches like the Madame CJ Walker Museum. This tour is way more than the usual facts about Dr. King’s life. Prepare to be amazed!

My mom and I absolutely LOVED this tour! Our trip to Atlanta was a surprise, and our travel agents booked us this tour in advance. Our guide Emily was so engaging with the best stories and facts- you'll learn some surprising things! It's a bummer that covid has closed off some buildings, but we had such a lucky oppportunity to visit the historic Madame CJ Walker Salon, which is preserved now as a little museum to music and artists! We learned so much about not just MLK, but the neighborhood and other civil rights leaders and Atlanta. You will love this tour, and you'll love Emily if she's your guide!

I only want 1 ticket. When I enter 1 ticket for myself, there isn't any availability. But when I enter 2 tickets, I can continue with my purchase. Does this tour not allow for Single purchases?
Written 16 August 2022
Hi. Yes they do allow singles. It sounds like a computer glitch. I’d try and call or email and alert them to the computer glitch. It is definitely worth resolving this to take the tour. . We thought the tour and guide were well prepared and informed and appreciated the experience of learning more about his life and times. Good luck.

We would like to take the tour on September 29 but that date is not shown on the calendar. Does that mean that it is not open?
Written 21 September 2021
Sorry if the answer is somewhere within the information, but I couldn’t find it. What time does the tour begin? I was looking to purchase tickets for a Sunday if that changes the departure time. Thanks in advance.

I am visiting Atlanta April 2 for spring break. Will this tour be open in April?
Written 2 March 2021
How long is the tour. Site says 1 1/2 hours but the break down of where/what we'll see adds up to more. In fact one stop says 2 hours. And how rough in the tour? I can walk around a zoo all day but that's at my pace.
Written 16 August 2020
The tour took roughly 3 hours but we had breaks in between (coffee break and just standing in front of a sight and getting some explanations). We mostly walked around in a more casual way, everybody in the group was able to adept to the space of our tour guide.
