The farm you will visit is a paradise for walkers, ramblers and wine lovers. Imagine exploring this world of rolling hills, cork forests, olive groves and vineyards in a landscape occasionally broken by a medieval fortress or an abandoned chapel. For six generations, the family owners have made a living on the 1,400 acre estate in the Alentejo by sustainably managing cork forests, rearing sheep and making fine wines. You're invited you to join to share the joy of their lives and see the beauty of the surrounding countryside. Nature-lovers and birdwatchers will not be disappointed. With luck, you might see or come across an Egyptian mongoose, a bustard, a wild boar, a hoopoe, a bee-eater, a booted eagle or many more species. On arrival you will be introduced to your guide who is a local archaeologist and conservationist. Start with a nice cup of coffee or cool refreshment. Then your guide will take you on a beautiful 2-hour Jeep tour into the deepest parts of the cork forest. During your tour/safari he will explain to you everything about the cork trees, cork cycle (cork stripping, cork storage, cork manufacturing). You will also learn about local fauna and flora, honey production, vineyards, Iberian pig fattening, olive groves and all the farm activities. When you return to the farmhouse and visit the shop where you can find the finest products it has to offer (cork handicraft, biologic olives and olive oil, honey and of course their wines). Later, have a cork stripper's traditional three-course meal in a quiet family-run restaurant. After this, it will be time to go home, but with the best memories of the Alentejo.

My honey and I took the two hour “Corktrekking” adventure that was led by our guide, Jose on the grounds of Herdade da Maroteira near Redondo, Portugal. Felt like we were on a “cork safari” in our Land Rover as we explored the 600 acre property. Our guide, Jose, has a lifetime of knowledge about cork farming that he learned from his grandpa who was a “corkmaster.” In addition to the cork trees, Herdade da Maroteira has a sixty acre vineyard that produces some of Portugal’s finest wine. Very unique experience that helps us to understand the cork farming and vineyard business in a very detailed and fun tour.

One of the highlights of our Portugal trip was the visit to Herdade da Maroteira for their Corktrekking tour of the cork forest. Jose was our driver and guide, sharing fascinating information about the cork industry, the long-term investment in growing and harvesting cork, and the estate's agri-ecosystem of supporting other industries including wine and pata negra. Beautiful views from the property and time well spent just a short drive from Evora.

Antonio did a great job educating me on how cork grows and is harvested. The old land rover is clean and well maintained. Highly recommend it.

Wonderful tour and history given by Jose at an old family farm with cork trees, some over 200 years old, water wells over 400 years old, and grape vines that are young but producing some of the best wine in Portugal. Well worth the money spent. The day was not hot and the tour was just 3 of us and Jose. He is full of knowledge of the area and very helpful in making sure we got there and enjoyed ourselves.

Jose gave us a wonderful experience driving through a beloved cork forest. He shared his knowledge of the industry in all aspects. Even though it was hectic day Jose spared nothing of the tour that exceeded our expectations.

We went not knowing what to expect but the promise of a tour in a Landy was enough. What we got was an awesome guide, Jose who was so friendly and helpful - even waiting for us to finish lunch before we set off. The tour around the cork forest was very interesting and Jose was able to give us a lot of information and answered all our questions. We never knew cork was so incredible and now we feel a tinge of guilt throwing one away.
The vineyard sector and its evolution was fascinating even though we come from a grape growing area. We still learnt new things. We took away very happy memories, some cork souvenirs and an excellent bottle of rosé!
Well worth a visit and Rondondo is a lovely rural town.

We did a short 4x4 jeep tour of the cork farm as it was a perfect topic for the children’s school project on transformations in nature. Jose was a very good tour guide and we found out lots of interesting facts that we’ll use for their projects. We chose quite a short tour as the children usually have the attention span of a gnat but I would’ve enjoyed the 2 or 4 hour tour as well I’m sure.

Jose speaks excellent English (thank goodness as my Portuguese is rubbish/non-existent!) and was very knowledgeable and friendly too. We also had one of the lovely farm dogs come for our trip with us which we all loved.

If we get the chance I’d certainly do another tour with this company. Philip and his wife were very friendly too. They recommended a local restaurant where we ate that evening where my first time of trying gazpacho was a definite hit (as recommended by Philip)

Thanks for our tour!!

I second prior posters' positive comments about corktrekking/cork safari at Herdade da Maroteira. We 4 adults had the pleasure of doing the tour with Philip, the owner. I suspect we were not alone in not having given cork much thought before this tour! We learned more about cork than we ever imagined there was to know. It was fascinating seeing the trees, learning their life cycle, understanding the markings and the layered cuts made about once every 10 years, and learning about the cork industry in Portugal. We also learned acorns are superfood to fatten up pigs, and learned about the vineyard that unexpectedly produces award-winning wines. Very glad to have done this terrific excursion. Next visit will be during harvest season!

Jose was a fabulous guide. His first hand knowledge answered all of our questions and we really got a lot out of this 4X4 tour. It would be truly fascinating to anyone who has any interest or just wants to learn. Jose was easy going, spoke perfect English and we had a fun ride.
