Overview
Trek across the volcanic landscape of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing on a full-day hike. Your guide ensures that you are fully prepared and equipped for the rugged terrain of Tongariro National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on New Zealand’s North Island. Expect to walk for about 12 miles (19 kilometers) in a spectacular wilderness of alpine lakes and mountain springs, with views of active volcanoes.
What to Expect

Make your own way to join your guide at the designated meeting spot, where your guide provides a safety briefing and equipment needed for the day.

Start your trek in Tongariro National Park—New Zealand’s oldest—on an easy track that follows Mangatepopo Stream up the valley. The trail gets steeper as you climb up to South Crater, ascending 425 feet (200 meters). Continue to Red Crater, Blue Lake, and Ketetahi Hut, taking in lovely views over Oturere Valley, the Kaimanawa range, Rangipo Desert, and Emerald Lakes.

A short climb to North Crater affords additional views before you zigzag over alpine vegetation, Mangatetipua Stream, open grassy areas, and native forest. Your 7-hour hike ends with refreshments at the Ketetahi parking lot.

This hike ranges from easy to moderately challenging, and is ideal for active people with a good level of fitness.

Safe for Middle-aged Hikers!

My husband and I regularly do 4-5 mile hikes, and were a little concerned about taking a 12 mile tramp. We enjoyed every minute! We had a very warm, clear, sunny day and all of the weather gear I brought stayed in my pack. I...More

One of the most incredible experiences I've ever done

My wife and I did the full day guided Tongariro Alpine crossing, and it was one of the most memorable experiences I've ever done. They say it takes 7.5-8hrs to do, but my wife isn't that confident on uneven rocky surfaces, so took us 9.5hrs....More
