About
One of the best Mayan sites in Belize, Caracol, is deep in the heart of the Chiquibul Forest Reserve. The reserve is located at the base of the Maya Mountains in the Cayo District in Western Belize.
Covering an area of nearly 25,000 acres, Caracol is one of the largest Mayan sites. Impressive not only in size, it also has an immense agricultural field system and elaborate city planning. Caracol is one of the most pristine and well-kept Maya sites in Belize. If you want to see an incredible piece of our history, head to Caracol in Belize.
Numerous carved monuments establish that Caracol was a major player in the geopolitics of the Maya civilization. Caracol was an ally of Calakmul in Campeche, Mexico and engaged in several wars with neighboring polities, such as Tikal, Naranjo and Ucanal in Guatemala.

- lmfrankel0 contributionsIsland Hopping, Snorkeling, and AMAZING BBQ lunchMy wife and I had an incredible time with Theo and Captain "Big Grouper". We got to explore a few of the Cayes which were beautiful. Then we went snorkeling with Theo and saw rays, a nurse shark, lobsters, corals, and tons of other fish. Theo did some spear fishing while snorkeling with us and got some delicious treats to cook up for lunch. Once we got to Bread and Butter Caye, Theo and the captain turned into expert chefs, cooking up barbecue chicken, rice and beans, veggies, and some of the fresh fish Theo caught. I should have taken a picture of the spread, but was too excited to dig in. My wife and I relaxed on hammocks and in the water while they prepared lunch. Then we all enjoyed the lunch together, which honestly has been some of the best food we've had so far and we've been eating pretty well :) I would definitely do this again. The guys went out of their way to make sure we had a great time, teach us about the local culture, fish, birds, and wildlife, and gave us some tips for the rest of our trip. My only caution is that the seas were a bit rough when we went and the boat is not huge, so if you get seasick easily or are not comfortable on boats, you may want to check with them on weather before you go out. We felt totally safe and had a great time, but I could see someone who gets seasick or not comfortable on boats being a little nervous. 12 out of 10 recommend this tour though!Written 23 March 2025
- Scmamatuna0 contributionsImpulse buy- No buyers remorse!!!!Guide Theo and captain Jeff led our 2 hours on the Sittee river and Anderson lagoon. Both were greatly knowledgeable about the plant and animal life along the river- sharing both facts and stories of this area ( Theo was a young entrepreneur with the fruits of a specific type of palm tree- selling the fruits for profit and making wine 😂). Two far off croc sightings, raccoons, fish eating bats, and some beautiful birds. The bio-lagoon was amazing, and the star gazing fabulous. Plan to swim, I regret not planning for this. Highly recommend!Written 22 March 2025
- Companion008127432140 contributionsWonderful, family-owned outfitter in Hopkins! We used Get to Know Belize Adventures, based in Hopkins, for a full-day snorkeling tour. Jeffrey and Anthony were the guides and Medz was the captain. The company was great to book with, they picked us up promptly at our hotel's dock, and the guides kept my 11-year-old safe and sound (despite his own best efforts!) The tour booked on-site was a much better price than the resorts offered, and we snorkeled at three spots, after an initial quick stop to check gear. The gear was all high-quality, and the crew made sure we were well outfitted. Jeffrey had an incredibly ability to spot sea life and we saw so many things (sting rays, manta rays, an eagle ray, an eel, conch, nurse sharks, angel fish, parrot fish, jacks, trumpet fish, big tarpons, vase sponges, a remora, lobster, and so many beautiful schools of fish.) All three answered our questions with generous tidbits and anecdotes about life in the area. Oh, and we stopped at Bread and Butter caye after snorkeling for fresh caught seafood that the guides had speared and just a little rum punch. It was truly one of the best days of my life. Cannot thank the company enough and we will definitely use them again when we, for sure, return to Hopkins. Enjoy your time. Belize is magical, and the people are just as wonderful. My only regret is that we didn't stay long enough to go out on the water with this crew a second time.Written 19 March 2025
- 645johny0 contributionsGreat tourJust a great experience! Theo and Medz were fantastic. Incredibly engaging the whole time from the ride along the river looking at wildlife, including some small crocodiles, to Anderson Lagoon. The colors were cool, but so was the night sky...zillions of stars. Be prepared to swim....it was very cool. Also, for the best experience, choose a night with the least amount of moonlight. Josie was extremely efficient in setting it up from the website in advance.Written 16 March 2025
- Explorer037175935610 contributionsBeautiful evening! We had a beautiful evening in the lagoon with Theo. He was an excellent guide, knowledgeable and fun! We spotted a few crocodiles and some other wildlife. Had a great time and would go again.Written 27 February 2025

- VERMONTRAVEL0 contributionsBrilliant bioluminescent bay and stargazingKnowledgeable local guides. The bioluminescent Lagoon was spectacular. The night sky was dark and the stars were brilliantWritten 22 February 2025
- alexanderhW8945UH0 contributionsHoneymoonTheo and Jeff were great hosts for us. There aren't many opportunities to have a private adventure in Hopkins, and having this private cruise set the tone for out trip. If you like wildlife viewing, this is a great chance to to do so.Written 22 February 2025
- alexanderhW8945UH0 contributionsHoneymoonGreat guides, very helpful. You'll see some amazing fish. If you're lucky, you'll even have fresh caught lobster or snapper from the trip.Written 22 February 2025

- 220RobertM0 contributionsExcellent tour of Cahal Pech with Alden from Get To Know Belize AdventuresLast week my wife and I toured the Cahal Pech Mayan ruins with Alden from Get To Know Belize Adventures. When Alden came to pick us up for our originally planned tour to the Xunantunic ruins, he explained that the ferry to those ruins had broken the day before. Alden gave us the option to tour the Cahal Pech ruins instead, and we are so glad we did. Alden made this a great trip from start to finish. On the way to the ruins and back, he provided us with lots of information about the areas we drove through and about Belize in general. Alden was incredibly knowledgeable about the ruins themselves and the Mayan civilization, and he made sure that exploring the site was safe and comfortable for us older visitors. Although the Cahal Pech ruins are not as tall as the Xunantunic ruins, I think they were probably more manageable for us. Alden made this a very memorable experience for us. Well done.Written 16 February 2025
- nina418840 contributionsGreat company, definitely recommend! My husband and I booked 3 excursions with Get To Know Belize Adventures for our honeymoon trip to Belize and we were thrilled with each one! Our first day we did a full day snorkeling trip. Our guides were Theo and Grouper, they were both friendly and knowledgeable! We stopped at a small island to practice snorkeling a little before heading to the reef where we did 3 stops. Snorkeling is a bit more difficult than I thought it would be, you really need to be a good swimmer and have to keep swimming otherwise the current just takes you away. It was really fun to see Theo catching fish and lobster right off the reef and we saw dolphins, sharks and lots of other creatures! After our 3rd snorkel stop they took us to Bread and Butter Caye and cooked the most amazing lunch, it was seriously some of the best food we had our entire trip! They made grilled and curry fish, chicken, rice and beans, conch ceviche, chips and salsa, it was wonderful! There was also a bar where we got rum punch! And a super sweet and friendly dog roaming around that we spent plenty of time petting and hammocks perfect for a quick island nap! Our next trip was to the Xunantunich Mayan Ruins. It was a bit of a drive from Hopkins, close to 3 hours. We were grouped with a large family of 10 for the drive, but did have our own guide just for the two of us for the tour which we really appreciated! The ruins are beautiful and so interesting to see and explore and our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. Our driver Alden (hopefully I spelled that right) was very nice and pointed out interesting things along the drive. Finally, we did a zip line trip at Mayflower Bocawina National Park! We had Alden as our driver again and he was an expert at navigating the dirt road into the park! The ziplining was beautiful and very safe. Josie was very easy to communicate with and did a great job of scheduling everything and answering all my questions! And if they end up grouping you with other people for your excursions they reduce the price a bit which was really nice! We would definitely book with them again if we return to Belize!Written 12 February 2025
- McKenna B0 contributionsGreat guides and great foodThe guides and the fresh cooked food on this trip were amazing! The tour included a happy mix of fishing, snorkeling and lounging. Would recommend this excursion to anyone.Written 10 February 2025
- bostongal19750 contributionsAmazing customer service and fab tours!!I should write an individual review for each of the three tours I did with Get to Know Belize while I was in Hopkins, because they were THAT GOOD and deserve all the praise, but I’m being lazy and just posting one. While I was here I went on the Cave Tubing tour at Herman’s Cave with Alden, the Monkey River Tour with Shane, and a half day snorkel trip with Jeff, Jaden and Ernest. The guides were all fantastic and I want to bring them all home with me. Such nice guys and so knowledgeable too. I have a lot of respect for the work they do - they have to deal with all sorts of personalities and they do it with grace, kindness and professionalism. The tours were so great! Do not hesitate to book with Get to Know Belize. I also wanted to go on the Island Hopping tour but it wasn’t available while I was here…guess I’ll just need to come back! These tours were very well planned and were such an important part of making my trip to Belize so memorable.Written 5 February 2025
- V8552VFpatriciam0 contributionsExcellent snorkelling tour guidesWe had a wonderful experience snorkelling with Christian, Ash, Kiron, and Tyler - they were extremely knowledgeable, courteous, and made sure that we had an excellent time! They made extra efforts to point out all the beautiful fish and helped make sure we were able to enjoy every aspect of the trip!Written 1 February 2025
