The guided tour begins at sunset next to the reception center in the historic village of Castelo Melhor. Marco welcomes you and gives you recommendations for this trip through Time! The descent to the Côa Valley (6 km) is in a 4x4 vehicle between ancient stone walls, olive groves and traditional almond groves. Along the descent we have a remarkable panoramic view of Quinta de Erva Moira, one of the most beautiful Quintas in the Douro. We begin to travel through time guided by the guide's skill, imagining mountain goats, herds of primitive bulls, horses and deer grazing along the banks of the river and a group of hunter-gatherers who attentively follow the herds preparing for the hunt! We parked next to the Côa River and when we got out of the car, the sounds, smells and sky enveloped us! We awaken the senses in harmony with the natural environment. A short walk (300 m) takes us to the 1st of 5 rocks. By turning on the beaming light, we open the window of time and reveal the art of our ancestors in all its splendor!

After meeting at the meeting point, we will descend on a 6km ride in a 4WD vehicle to the Côa Valley Archaeological Park. Breathtaking landscapes between ancient stone walls, olive groves, almond groves and vineyards. The guided interpretive tour allows you to discover the landscape at the same time as we travel back in time to the Upper Paleolithic where we can see, in the place where they were recorded, rock art with approximately 30 thousand years of history!!! The natural riverside environment, the sounds and smells are the perfect setting for this journey through time!

Knowledgeable and fascinating tour of the beautiful Grand Coa Valley
Marco our guide was knowledgeable, passionate and enthusiastic, while showing us the rock art and local nature. He also recommended local walks in the area we were staying which were beautiful and the perfect length.

Excellent tour guide, far better than Foz Coa Museum guides.
Marco is excellent as a tour guide. We spent the day and evening learning from Marco at the Penascosa site. He enjoyed questions, was detailed about the rock art, and taught about prehistoric and modern environment and culture. Marco was so much better than the Foz Coz Museum guide we had the next day at Canada. I preferred Ambieduca, so much better.

      Palaeolithic rock art made accessible
Marco pick us up in our hotel and transported us not just to another place, but another time. We were able to stand where Paleolithic people stood and admire their mark on the world. Marco was not just knowledgeable about the art, but informed us miracle the Portuguese people performed in protecting the area, which was due to be submerged by a hydroelectric dam when the art was discovered in the 90s. He the escorted us through the museum where he explained the displays! It was a perfect morning.

      Very impressive
After visiting the museum we were ver interested in seeing the drawings. The receptionist at the museum arranged an English speeking guide for the next day. Apparently there are only a few tours a day in order to prevent the site and surroundings from being overrun. For the same reason you cannot enter the site with your own car. Visits can only take place with a certified guide. Marco was our guide. His English is very good and he knows a lot about this area and the drawings. I don’t think there was a question he couldn’t answer. He has a great sense of humor and drove us carefully in his 4x4 over the impassable roads. If you are in the neighborhood don’t hesitate to contact Marco for a visit to the drawings.

      A day to remember
We visited Penascosa one of the sites of Foz Côa Archaelogical Park. We had a detailed explenation of several engravings and we were really impressed by the quality of the engravings that have been there for more than 20,000 years. Marco is an easy going guide with a deep knowledge on the archaelogical features and also gives as an insight of the Natural features around use which are very rich as well. It was really a 2 in 1 tour that makes it a great value for the money. He will be there to answer all your questions and the tour may take longer so everyone has time to acknowledge everything. Totally recommended and we will come back for other sites and nature walks!

Foz Coa Rock Art Night Tour with Marco was a major highlight of our Portugal trip
We wanted to do a night visit to the Penascosa rock art site in the Foz Coa Archaelogical Park, on a Monday night in April when the park staff does not offer tours. The park staff arranged for Marco Ferraz of Ambieduca to give us the Monday night tour (we reserved it in advance through the park) and we were just so pleased with Marco and his excellent tour. He communicated with us in advance by email, letting us where and when to meet him (Castelo Melhor), and he promptly arrived at the 8pm arranged time. We rode in his 4-wheel drive SUV, leaving before sunset so we could see the Coa Valley from an overlook as he drove down the steep dirt road to the Penascosa site. It was just a very short walk to the rock art, with Marco leading the way with his strong flashlight. He showed us 6 or 7 places there with the amazing 25,000 year old rock art carvings into exposed stones. Seeing them at night was superb, as the lighting by Marco really made it easy to see the detailed carvings. Marco also had a notebook full of drawings that showed with colored lines the outlines of the animals carved in each rock, making it even easier to discern them (which can be tricky, because many of them overlap each other). Marco was a passionate guide, evidencing his long term association with the park and with rock art in general. His English was excellent, almost perfect, as he provided extremely informative discussions of the topic and answered our questions. The whole trip, including an introductory discussion at the meeting point, the longish rides down to the valley and back up, and the outstanding time spent at the site, was about 3 hours. We sincerely appreciated Marco's expertise and his ability to tell us all about what we were seeing. He is a great guide and we can highly recommend him for this tour. Thank you again, Marco, for the fantastic tour!

      Interesting and informative
My friend, her husband, her 5 year old and I toured the museum and took a 4 wheel drive out to see the rock art with Marco. Marco made the tour interesting. His knowledge and passion were infectious. I would definitely recommend a guided tour with Marco.

The best day of our 10-day family tour of Portugal
We had a group of 10, ranging in age from 7 to 73. We booked a guided tour with Marco from Ambieduca (+351 934 900 197) and have nothing but great things to say about our experience. We met Marco in the small town of Castelo Melhor, where he and his assistant took us in 4x4 vehicles to the Penascosa rock-art site. The road was very bumpy and steep, we were glad to have guides! We stopped a few times along the way for Marco to explain the landscape and history of the area. Once onsite Marco gave excellent descriptions of each area of rock art, making the experience fun and interesting for both the kids and adults. He was cognoscente of the hot sun and limited out time out in the open, by using shaded areas to do more thorough explanations. Of our 10 day Portugal tour, this trip to the Coa Valley was a definite highlite. Cost was €15 per person, quite reasonable for a 3 hour experience.

Don’t miss this tour if you’re in Portugal!!
Marco is the best guide we've ever had for any kind of tour we've done anywhere, period. He is informed, passionate, accommodating, and kind. He does not rush, he is still just as excited as a newcomer about the rock art and truly happy to share the experience of viewing these phenomenal sites. Months later we still talk about the day we spent with him and hope to return to the Coa Valley as soon as we can. Absolutely incredible, highly recommend. Don't miss the evening tour, pure magic! Thank you Marco!

Marco from Ambieduca knows how to transport his guests back to the Upper Paleolithic period. Visiting in the dark enhances the magic of this pristine environment and unique rock engravings. A visit to the museum is highly recommended before the tour. A guided tour of the Faia Brava by Marco from Ambieduca rounded off my visit to the Coa. I can highly recommend this introduction to the authentic and beautiful landscape of northern Portugal to anyone who is interested in the pristine landscapes of southwestern Europe.
It won't be my last visit there. Thank you Marco, for everything I learned from you!

Our visit to see some of the Côa valley rock art at dusk was a great experience. Our guide Marco was really knowledgeable about the history of the area, both ancient & modern, taking us on a journey from 30,000 years from the early hunter gatherers to the modern age.

His love for the area & it's wildlife is infectious. During our drive down to the valley floor he frequently stopped the vehicle to point out interesting birds from eagles to larks.

If you have the chance, visit the Museu do Côa. It will really help understanding the site in context. It also has a great restaurant!

Above all, be prepared to be surprised & astounded.

My partner and I did both a day tour and this night tour on the same day and I must say this night tour was way more impressive. The drawings were a lot clearer by night and the whole experience felt a lot more special.
Our guide Marco was great. He gave a very good explanation and his English was very clear.
Be aware though that there is a minimum fee for this tour and that you have to pay by cash. This was mentioned to us by email when we made the booking via the website of the museum but we kind of forgot about this when we finally arrived in Portugal.

Marco was very kind and passionate about teaching and showing the artwork which in itself is a remarkable gift to the world. The time alloted was good and the start time allowed me to see the lovely valley under daylight before sundown. Marco also showed his skill at nature guiding during that time pointing out bird species, plants and stopping to guide a toad safely across the dirt road. I will hire Marco again for other nature trips to the area.

Marco provided a truly special experience. We were able to see these magnificent artworks up close, and the flashlight in the dark made them spring to life in front of our eyes.

I was honestly not that interested in going to Foz Côa. I expected crowds and the tourist shuffle and barely discernable traces glimpsed around the shoulders of strangers. Instead, just three of us climbed around the stones where we were as close to the engravings as we could want. Marco helped us understand these artworks and their context as well as the story of how they were uncovered and preserved.

I felt for a little while as though I'd stepped outside of time. Marco allowed us to be unhurried and quiet in the face of such staggeringly ancient art. An experience I will remember and treasure for the rest of my life.

We went on a night visit to Foz Côa with Marco and the experience was incredible. I'm Portuguese but my friends aren't and when I called the museum to ask for a tour in English they recommended Marco to me. His English is perfect, and it was great not to have to give up knowledge due to a language barrier. The atmosphere was very peaceful, to the point that we forgot that we were with a guide and not a friend. There was no rush to see the engravings quickly and we could also be in silence just enjoying the place where we were, it was really peaceful. Marco has immense knowledge on various topics that make the experience richer. Let's go back!

What an incredible experience we had with Marco! The cave paintings were amazing on their own, but with Marco’s knowledgeable sharing about them, his passion for nature and conservation, and his warmth and humour, he totally made the paintings come alive. We went for the night tour and it was so atmospheric and unforgettable. 100% recommend!

We booked the evening tour with Marco. This was one of our best decisions during our bicycle tour in the Douro Valley. The 30.000 year old engravings in the Foz Coa Valley were absolutely impressive. Marco was a really nice and interested guide. He gave us a lot of information and explained the engravings with his small flashlight. Don‘t miss Foz Coa and take Marco as your guide!

Outstanding night activity viewing prehistoric rock art in its native setting. Marco is one of the best all around guides we've ever toured with; informed and informative, enthusiastic, personable and funny. Our prior unguided visit to the museum undoubtedly enhanced the experience.

Marco was a fantastic tour guide. Articulate, energetic and passionate about the subject and the mission of preserving it for posterity and generous with his time. We were fortunate to be able to arrange a tour on short notice and went during the late afternoon, not at night. But we learned much on our late afternoon tour, every bit as fascinating as Lascaux, and more real and accessible.
