Excellent guided tour of this historic site
Excellent guided tour by Maurice, who shared with us lots of interesting facts about the prison and its occupants. Good way to spend 2-3 hours and would highly recommend to others.

Great day out. Cold…..so wrap up but that’s to be expected. Guided tour was good and informative.
Informative tour that last about 1.5 hours. My son loved it as he is really into history and his dad is a current prison officer my pre teen daughter found it a bit long so maybe only do the guided tour if they find that stuff fascinating. Very cold but to be expected and it’s old and run down which are mentioned in several reviews….. What do you expect!? All part of the charm! Great experience and great to see so much history. Although I had been before it was really enjoyable.

    The prison you can leave!
Visited the prison and went on the early guided tour, which was taken by Morris, who is an excellent tour guide. Thoroughly enjoyed learning about the prison and its history, past well known in-mates and filming which has taken place there. Morris, who worked for the prison service told us of some of his experiences too, very interesting also. After the tour you can then explore the prison at your leisure as the ticket is an all day one. There is opportunity to purchase hot drinks and light snacks only, so if you require a lunch you can walk in to town and then return to the prison. They have a small gift shop and museum in the visitor centre. We hope this attraction will continue in the future, as this is part of our local history. Please visit the prison and tell your friends about it.

It started off slightly disappointingly but as the route moved on, so did the interest and enjoyment. We would have liked there to have been more information on the walls to explain the various areas.

Very interesting experience this was the third visit for me and have now got an annual pass so will be going back The place has a real sense of history and gives a great insight to how the place was run and what it must have been like to be a prisoner there and is well worth a visit Its not overdone and is pretty much how it was when decommissioned and full of atmosphere Looking forward to next time

We came as a big group who had an inset day. 8 x children aged 7-10 yrs and they loved it! We virtually had the place to ourselves and we could explore at our own pace. Fascinating history, chilling reality at times. Such an insight into prison life. We all absolutely loved it and it's a day out that will forever be remembered. Would thoroughly recommend.

Amazing a bit freaky but was interesting on what happened there. Took our dog around there as well she was not her self but it was good in the first photo I think I've caught something in grey

Thank you for your review. It sounds like you had quite the experience when visiting the Prison! It's not uncommon for certain places to evoke strong reactions or unusual experiences. Bringing your dog along adds another layer to the story, as animals can often sense things that humans may not. Regarding the photo you mentioned, capturing something in grey could indeed be interesting. If you're comfortable, you might want to share the photo or describe what you observed in more detail. Sometimes, other travelers or enthusiasts might have insights or similar experiences to share. Overall, it sounds like you had a memorable visit, albeit a bit eerie. Exploring such places like this one can definitely leave a lasting impression. If you have any more details or stories to share, feel free to do so!

Booked this for my daughter’s birthday as she’d mentioned an interest. Never thought of coming here despite being less than an hour away.

£15 entrance fee, extra £3 for the car park. Checked in about 15 mins early, given our map then off to explore alone.

Really interesting place, took us about 2 hours to have a good look around. It was quite an eery place (was overcast and not many others around).

Well worth a visit.
