The Lombards recognized the value and quality of Roman craftsmanship
The Lombard buildings in Salerno, Italy, indeed incorporated Roman columns as a common practice during the Lombard period. The Lombards, a Germanic people, established a kingdom in Italy in the 6th century and ruled over various regions, including Salerno, until the 11th century. During this time, the Lombards often reused architectural elements from earlier Roman structures, including columns, to construct their own buildings. The Lombards recognized the value and quality of Roman craftsmanship, and incorporating salvaged materials into their own structures allowed them to create impressive buildings while also demonstrating their power and cultural continuity. Salerno, in particular, was an important Lombard center, and its Lombard rulers likely repurposed columns and other architectural elements from nearby Roman ruins, such as those from the ancient city of Paestum. Paestum, located about 30 kilometers south of Salerno, contains well-preserved ancient Greek and Roman ruins, including Doric columns from the 6th and 5th centuries BCE. By reusing Roman columns in Lombard buildings, the Lombards merged their own Germanic architectural style with the grandeur and symbolism associated with Roman civilization. This practice of incorporating Roman elements into Lombard architecture was not unique to Salerno but was widespread throughout the Lombard kingdom in Italy during that period.
