Beading class option: Enjoy a beading class taught by local Mayan women. This is a fun interactive activity that is perfect for individual, groups, or families. Beading class with lunch option: Your class will end with a delicious lunch at the graduate-run rooftop café, serving some of the best food in Guatemala and with gorgeous views of Lake Atitlan to go with it!
Tour option: Spend a half-day getting to know the community of Santa Cruz and the work of Amigos de Santa Cruz, a nonprofit organization. Amigos de Santa Cruz believes education is the key to long-term community empowerment and works in the seven communities of Santa Cruz in public schools, with women’s groups, and at its vocational center CECAP, where people can learn trade skills to improve their incomes and lives.
The town of Santa Cruz la Laguna is only accessible by boat. You will travel by boat from Panajachel to the main dock in Santa Cruz, then take a 5-minute tuk-tuk ride up the hill to the village where you will be met by your guide. Your tour will begin with a visit to CECAP, the vocational training center, where you will be given a brief overview of Amigos’ programs and history. Observe various classes in progress at CECAP such as carpentry, sewing, beading, and cooking. Then, visit one of Amigos’ model classrooms in the kindergarten and primary schools. Finally, embark on a short tour of the village including a visit to the local church, one of the oldest churches in all of Guatemala.
All income from classes and tours will go to support economic empowerment and social enterprise programs at CECAP vocational center.
