Spend a half-day getting to know the community of Santa Cruz and the work of Amigos de Santa Cruz, a local nonprofit organization.
The town of Santa Cruz la Laguna is only accessible by boat. You will travel by boat from Panajachel to the main dock in Santa Cruz, then take a 5-minute tuk-tuk ride up the hill to the village where you will be met by your guide. Your tour will begin with a visit to CECAP, the vocational training center, where you will be given a brief overview of Amigos’ programs and history. Observe various classes in progress at CECAP such as carpentry, sewing, beading, and cooking. Then, visit one of Amigos’ model classrooms in the kindergarten and primary schools.
Amigos de Santa Cruz has been supporting education and economic empowerment for the people of Santa Cruz la Laguna, Guatemala since 1998. We are watching what happens when a generation gets educated for the first time. Our programs focus on Early Education, Youth Leadership and Scholarship Support, Women’s Empowerment, and Economic Empowerment through hands-on training and business skills development. Our two social enterprises, Café Sabor Cruceño and Tienda Manos Cruceñas, provide direct income for graduates of our vocational training center and make a great stop for visitors. Please join us in changing the world!
Finally, embark on a short tour of the village including a visit to the local church, one of the oldest churches in all of Guatemala. Your tour will end with an (optional) delicious lunch at the graduate-run rooftop café, serving some of the best food in Guatemala and with gorgeous views of Lake Atitlan to go with it!
