About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 500octaviam0 contributionsHeritage on a Plate delights! So grateful to Darna and Jeremy for a fabulous afternoon of history, culture and most importantly, incredible food! We would absolutely not have been able to find the amazing local treasures they took us to during our walking tour. After our tour they also generously followed up with further suggestions for other places to visit plus the details of each dish we had tried at each establishment. The afternoon was well paced, with a deeply considered menu. Can't recommend highly enough if you are looking a friendly, informative and delicious local tour in Penang!Written 1 July 2024
- jfairer0 contributionsGreat introduction to the food and culture of Georgetown. It was a great introduction to the food of Georgetown. We did this tour on the day we arrived. Brandon was brilliant. It really set us up for the rest of the holiday. We have since revisited a couple of the places. The chicken samosas we had are probably the best I have ever tasted.Written 29 November 2023
- Grapehair0 contributionsA must do George Town experience, the food tour, beats all expectations. To be honest, wasn’t sue what to expect. Brandon turned up on the dot and the next 3 hours was a thoroughly entertaining and informative morning not only sampling many different ethnic dishes but also learning about Malay life, art, culture and its people. A tremendous way to pass a morning. Great guide and even better food.Written 29 November 2023
- Laila20130 contributionsFantastic lunch food tour !A wonderful morning spent touring some interesting Penang foodie establishments we would never have found without our knowledgable guide Brandon. Many of which are hidden behind unpretentious shop fronts to which many would not look twice. An amazing tour, Truly remarkable food!Written 4 November 2023
- Jasminehelen0 contributionsDelicious, informative night outThis fabulous tour was like a night out with good friends. Friendly and amazingly informative, Brendan took us to a great variety of eating spots but the highlight for me was fascinating explanations of the culture, architecture and religions. It really was the best walking tour I’ve done anywhere in Asia. The food of course was amazing, and we were given details of the ingredients which really added to the experience. It was so great to get a follow up email the next morning with detailed information about the places and foods we had tried. It also included suggestions ( and location links!!) to even more fabulous eating places around George Town.Written 13 October 2023
- rebeccaj3230 contributionsFantastic experience, highly recommendA fantastic way to explore George town and the incredible variety of cuisines it has on offer with such a diverse population. Brandon was an excellent guide, he gave us a taste of the culture and history of the area as well as the food. Every tour is different and ours covered a huge variety - from char koay teow through Malaysian Muslim Indian curries, different Peranakan fusion cuisines and some sweet treats. I would hugely recommend this tour to anyone who likes food!Written 15 September 2023
- 5murraya0 contributionsAn experience to behold! The knowledge imparted by the guide we had on the day, which was not the guide originally scheduled but someone called in late…. His knowledge of the history of Malaysia and how that related to Malaysia’s cuisine was invaluable. We ate at some amazing establishments that highlighted this, including some that are Michelin referenced. I would recommend this to anyone interested in the evolution of Malaysian cuisine.Written 11 August 2023
- Helen_PhilC0 contributionsFantastic Evening in GeoregetownAn excellent way to sample the food and history of George Town. Our hosts Bee and Jeremy were friendly and very knowledgeable introducing us to some amazing food we may not have found on our own. We also enjoyed following up on many of the recommendations provided after the tour. Would highly recommend this tour!Written 7 August 2023
- edwardmX7139CP0 contributionsFantastic experienceWe shared a wonderful day in Penang with Jeremy. He's a hugely knowledgeable and passionate guide. We crammed a huge amount of food and history into the tour and came away really feeling like we had an insight into what makes Penang's culinary traditions so rich and varied. The highlight was a visit to Bibik's Kitchen where we met the wonderful owner, Girly. Highly recommended.Written 1 August 2022
- jenbopops200 contributionsGreat night food tour in Penang!Do yourself a big foodie favour and make time to do this walking tour around the streets of Penang with Danny. We went at night but day tours are also available. Our personal recommendation would be to do it early in your stay so then you get the chance to go back and revisit places and it also gives you the chance to search out other places that might appeal to you. Really worthwhile and cost friendly. Jennie & ChrisWritten 23 July 2020
- nhnovelist0 contributionsBest Food Tour We've Ever Been OnMy husband and I are total foodies. We've been on a few dozen food tours across three continents. And this was hands down the best one we've ever experienced. Danny was an absolutely incredible guide, telling us the fascinating history of George Town while taking us through the city. And the food . . . I'm still dreaming about so much of the food. It honestly breaks my heart that I live on the other side of the world, because I've been craving several of the foods we tried since our tour.Written 28 February 2020
- U3236XGemmaw0 contributionsMust do in Penang!I had my tour with Danny and he was extremely knowledgeable about George Town - the history, culture and the food! It was really insightful learning about Penang's past and the vast cultural tapestry. Trying food from the different cultures that make up Penang was amazing and I tried foods I wouldn't have chosen otherwise because I wasn't sure what they were. He also gave me great tips on other foods to try and areas to visit. Highly recommended!Written 14 February 2020
- S6056JVemilyd0 contributionsAwesome way to experience the cityThe lunch hop with Danny was such an amazing way to see the city of Georgetown, experience all of the wonderful local food and learn about the rich heritage of Penang. Danny was very knowledgeable, and felt more like a friend than a tour guide. Would absolutely recommend this experience to anyone visiting Penang!Written 4 February 2020
- karenmae4260 contributionsWell worth it!My husband and I had a great lunch tour with Danny. He is such an excellent guide and really knowledgeable about Penang. We love getting to know cities that we travel to through their food, and this tour definitely did that for us. We visiting quite a few places that we would’ve never found on our own or known what to order. We would highly recommend doing this tour when visiting Penang!Written 30 January 2020
- Bevan v0 contributionsFood, culture, history served on an exceptional tourThis is our third trip to Penang and we thought we knew a bit about the world renowned street food in Penang, but decided to take the 3-Hour Heritage on a Plate Tour anyway. Our guide, Jeremy, soon made us realise how little we actually knew. Not only does Jeremy live and breathe food, his knowledge of the origins, the history of the area and his long term experience in Penang was encyclopaedic. I have a few dietary restrictions and Jeremy had gone out of his way to ensure that this was all covered in the tour which made for a seamless and thoroughly enjoyable day. There were so many places, flavours and locations that we could not possibly have remembered all of them. This is were the cream on the cake came in. The next day, Jeremy sent us a comprehensive list of all of the place we visited, the food we sampled and recommendations of many others to try in the future. Highly recommended, thank Jeremy from Bevan and Fiona.Written 15 January 2020

Booked this food tour as part of a 2 week South East Asia cruise. I was keen to do something different and Danny had great reviews..... yet the excursion still exceeded our expectations,
Danny is so knowledgeable, friendly, professional and easy to chat to. Quite incredible how much we learnt about the history of Penang, life as a Penangite, the hidden meaning of Penang,s street art and their delicious food!
We ate in places that as cautious UK travellers we would not have considered. What an utterly awesome experience this became, eating and drinking like a local! This taught use so much that a few days later in Singapore we ate at a similar style restaurant with real confidence.
Brilliant experience - thanks Danny!

Just go on and book this tour!! It really is Heritage on a plate, you get to know George town and you get to taste George town :). Danny was an excellent guide, very attentive! If I wasn't leaving Penang I would have gone for a second round ;). Eating your way through a city is the best way to get to know it in my opinion, just make sure you are hungry :)

Thank you Jeremy for sharing your wealth of knowledge of the local area and the many cuisines that are available in Georgetown.
We thoroughly enjoyed tasting the different foods you selected for us.
The final tasting of the Nyonya food was so memorable we are returning to the restaurant tonight to enjoy more of it.
Thank you
Sheryll

Brandon the guide was first class. He speaks fluent English and is very knowledgeable on local food, customs and history.
If you are only briefly stopping in Penang this is about as good an intro as you can get.
Specifically, street food (Penang is all about food) is often difficult as the traders rarely speak English so a guide, on your first outing, is a great start.
This tour is fairly pricey for the food you get, but worth it for the knowledge received.

Do yourself a favor and book this tour while you can. Jeremy is a wealth of information on the history of Georgetown and Penang and of course on the food that’s available throughout the city. We loved that we got to try foods from different cultural backgrounds, and they were all good. Our favorites were the samosas ( we went back the next day to get some more) and the food at Bibik’s restaurant, which was the last stop at the tour. Thank you for this wonderful experience!

Danny's tour of Georgetown is one of the highlights of our whole vacation in Malaysia. He is a charasmatic and thoughtful host, who took care of us and catered the tour to suit our preferences. The food was outstanding, but what makes this tour special is Danny's expertise on the history of Georgetown and his passion for conserving it. An absolute must-do when visiting Penang. Thank you, Danny!

Danny was a fantastic guide, and the tour gave us an opportunity to know the area early on as well as the history. The food was fantastic, some of which would be very difficult to find elsewhere. Really would recommend in particular early in tour trip to penang

George Town may be 70000 degrees but Danny from Heritage on a Plate made my dad and I feel super cool and brave by showing us around local haunts and feeding us some incredible food. We tried to pace ourselves but even though I was wearing my Eating Dress (TM) and even though we walked plenty with lots of incredible historical insight, I was waddling by the end of it, bested by an incredible Duck Noodle Soup.
This tour is how every foodie dreams of spending an evening, like stepping into those Netflix food travel shows we all drool over from the sofa.
Will 💯 be coming back again with my husband and friends the next time I’m in Penang.

Our host Jeremy was not only informative, interesting and enthusiastic about Penang's culinary delights but also its diverse history and melting pot of cultures. We discovered the hidden food stalls and experienced a fantastic variety of food on offer. Walking the streets and learning about how Penang was settled was a amazing. Our last stop for the night was a Michelin restaurant and was an amazing way to cap off what was one of the best food tours ever.
Fully recommend you try it.
Thanks again Jeremy, from David and Genine
