- N6873LVnikkim0 contributionsGreat experience! Highly Recommend! This was an amazing experience! I am a seasoned horseback rider, but my husband is not. Allesia was great with both of us! She also clearly cares for the horses and did her best to make it the most comfortable for both us and them. You do get to help care for them with water/grain and I really appreciate this aspect of the experience because it's like thanking them for the ride in advance and then after the fact. There's also barn cats hanging out all over and we thought this was extra cute. We went in October, and it was still very hot so dress accordingly and have comfy closed toe shoes. Some of the trail is shaded, depending on where you go. She has some chaps to borrow if you don't wear long pants.Written 26 August 2024
- 651gusf0 contributionsOff the beaten track, literallyI hate horses, but my girls love them so I "took one for the team" and booked this. The girls had a great time and even I enjoyed the experience. (I spent years as a kid working as an unpaid stableboy, which is why I don't choose to spend time with horses as an adult). First things first: this is a business that works animals in the heat of a Roman summer, so welfare was my biggest concern when I booked this. On the whole, I was pleasantly surprised. Some of these animals clearly had hard lives before they came to Ostia, but they showed no sign of poor recent treatment. They were well hydrated, in ok form considering we went during a heatwave, and all of them still showed personality despite their current careers carrying fat tourists around. Alessia did use spurs herself while guiding our hack, but with good reason - some of the trails are very narrow, and she needs to manoeuvre with precision while guiding beginners in this terrain. She's a very competent rider - light with her own horse, and has most of the others trained to voice/whistle for the basics. So if you're worried about welfare: the horses were in good nick considering, and they aren't being asked to do too much in the heat, so I came away feeling that these are working animals that are being worked responsibly by a competent outfit, which is what you'd expect at the price (if it had been cheaper, I wouldn't have booked it). The experience itself is unique and very memorable. You see some real Roman countryside, with well-kept horses (a highlight for my girls if not this reviewer personally). You also get to see some ancient Roman ruins in the countryside - not like the carefully excavated and catalogued sites you can see at Ercolano or Ostia Antica, but as the ruins have existed for millennia for the peoples who have lived here. I've spent over 8 weeks in Rome over the years as a tourist, and this is genuinely something different and well worth it. Transport links are surprisingly good - we were staying near Piazza del Popolo so two metros and a train got us to the Ostia Antica pickup point in under an hour and a half for 1,50 euro.Written 19 August 2024
- O8733YLelizabethg0 contributionsFabulous Riding excursion at Horse Sanctuary in Ostia AnticaAlessia, her wonderful volunteers and the gentle, easy to ride horses at Cavalieri di Gaia gave our family of 4 with divergent riding abilities a beautiful first morning in Rome. Ostia Antica is close to the airport so it's a perfect thing to do before heading into the city. The organization rescues and gives a home to retired and injured horses. Highly recommend!Written 18 August 2024
- F6075GTjosephd0 contributionsI highly recommend this tour. Alessia, her horses, the countryside, and the history were all amazing. ❤️I fully enjoyed this experience. We were able to feed and brush the stunning horses and then ride them in beautiful woodlands and countryside. I am definitely not an experienced rider but Alessia was patient and great at teaching me how to ride a horse. The horses were absolutely beautiful and I had a wonderful time. I would 10/10 do this again.Written 18 August 2024
- 352dam0 contributionsAmazing experienceAn amazing experience…. riding at the beach ! Nice horses and a very friendly guide. We can absolutely recommend this experience!Written 2 August 2024
- L1705YMbobc0 contributionsGreat experienceAlessia was really welcoming and we spent time feeding and grooming the horses. We then went on a trot around the surrounding woodlands and even managed a quick gallop at the end! We were dropped off to the nearby station at the end and also got to have some lovely ice cream. Alessia was super kind and answered all our questions patiently. Thanks Alessia! Highly recommend and no previous riding experience necessary.Written 27 July 2024
- charlenebZ8471TC0 contributionsA fantastic horse riding adventure for all abilitiesI high recommend this horse riding adventure! We had a brilliant time and our guide Alessia was just amazing, a true horse woman who has extensive knowledge of the local area and cares deeply about her horses. A highlight of out holiday in Italy!Written 25 July 2024

- Kaelyn S0 contributionsWell prepared staff and beautiful countryside!I have ridden horses for 10 years and I had a great time on this tour! There were others in my group that had never ridden a horse before and they were able to accommodate both the more experienced riders and the beginners. They match the horse to the person and you get the full experience! We were picked up from the station and had some food and coffee at a local cafe. Afterwards we went to the ranch where we met the horses and were given helmets and leather leg coverings for those who did not wear pants. We gave treats to the horses and had the chance to brush them and pet on them before they were set with tack and we mounted them. The trail is beautiful and they even went as far as to take those who were experienced away from the normal group and took a seperate trail where we were able to trot more and ride at a brisker pace while she explained the history of the area and brought us to ruins! They were knowledgeable and had a wide range of horses from many backgrounds-for example mine was a dressage horse that had a specifically trained gait so it was very fun to experience such well trained horses that you don’t always see when doing horse riding excursions on vacation. I would absolutely do this again and the woman who runs it was a joy to be around and if I’m ever back in Rome they will be seeing me! The staff are kind and funny and want to make sure you have a safe and enjoyable ride and I would say they absolutely achieved it on my front. In my opinion they are also the most cost effective for the time we spent there and the amount we did the Italian countryside is beautiful and even more so when you are on the back of a horse!Written 14 July 2024
- v_gia0 contributionsFull ExperienceAlessia was awesome, friendly and accommodating. I was on vacation with my family and she arranged pick up for us, gave us a full horse riding experience and also educated us!!! I would pick this tour again any time!!!!Written 1 July 2024
- mohammedqa0 contributionsAmazong horse riding experience near RomeI had an amazing horse riding experience in Rome! (6hrs ride). The stables were well-maintained, and the horses were clearly well-cared for. The staff were professional and very friendly, making sure everyone felt comfortable. The trail offered stunning views of countryside, and our guide shared interesting information. Whether you're a beginner or experienced rider, this is a must-try activity in Rome. Highly recommended!Written 24 June 2024
- O5183HWjanep0 contributionsWonderful day and experience! Do it!I had a really lovely day and wonderful experience! I would definitely recommend. Everyone was very friendly, the countryside is beautiful and the horses are gorgeous. I really liked that the ranch works with rescue horses too. The experience was relaxed, we fed the horses and groomed them and then did the ride followed by food at a restaurant. I found the booking slightly vague which was ok for me as I'm happy to go with whatever but I would recommend contacting them directly if you want to confirm more specifically what will be included in the trip.Written 17 June 2024
- sophiehL82PU0 contributionsAlessia best instructor! We had the best experience on the tour! The guide Alessia was so informative and enthusiastic and was able to make us beginner horse riders feel so comfortable. It was nice to feed and groom the horses before riding them, and she was very good at instructing us and teaching us how to ride properly. The scenes were amazing along the ride. Alessia was kind enough to show us beautiful parts of Ostia Antica and provide us recommendations upon the rest of our travels. 10/10!Written 7 June 2024
- MaireB14160 contributions⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ x10 (long review but please read through all of it)My rides (yes rides) with Cavilieri do Gaia were absolutely incredibly! The highlight of my trip to Italy. I am a strong intermediate rider and look to take horse tours any time I am abroad. I found this tour on trip advisor and then looked at the company’s instagram place. The horses looked well taken care over, the scenery was beautiful, and the tour took you through an archaeological park. I booked immediately. The company owner, Alessia, was amazing! Incredibly responsive to questions from the beginning and detailed in how to get to the meeting location. On the day of my tour (Monday), my Uber driver didn’t understand my English very well and dropped me off at the wrong location about twenty minutes away. Instead of telling me to figure it out, Alesia went out of her way to drive, find me, and pick me up! I was so grateful because most tour operators would not do something like that. In the car, Alessia asked about my experience with horses and I told her about how I rehabbed my own horse at home. She explained that some of her horses are also rescues and she rehabs them too! When we got to Alessia’s ranch, it became apparent how much she loves and takes care of her horses, which is so important to me. All of her horses have 24/7 access to food, water, and shelter if needed and she’s knows each of their personalities. Even though I was late, there was no rush and we took our time meeting the horses, grooming them, and feeding them. When it came to the actual ride, I was given a beautiful Irish sporthorse—Red. He was absolutely perfect! Smart, confident, and responsive, and he rode like a dream. Our morning ride took us through a pine forest, a sea of tall grass filled with wildflowers, poppies, and dandelions (think scenes from gladiator when he’s walking through the grass), and ending with a stop a beautiful little restaurant where we could tie up the horses in the shade. Along the ride, Alessia gave a wonderful tour talking about the history of Ostia, the archaeological park, and how important Ostia was as a center of trade and commerce. We returned back to the ranch and I thought that my tour was finished, but Alessia called another guide who worked at the ranch and offered a second ride of the day with several of her students and the other guide, Pietro. It was great to meet her students and her friends who all spoke so highly of Alessia and her horses. I had Carin for the second ride, a beautiful 17.1 H grey. The second ride took us through another part of the park and Roman roads, and due to a recent shoulder injury, I split off with Pietro to go at a slower pace since I cannot gallop on sometimes uneven terrain at the moment. Pietro was an excellent guide and told me about his time at the ranch, some more history of Ostia, and about the horses. Once we finished at the ranch, taking care of the horses, and locking up, Alessia invited me to come back for another ride later in the week and Pietro was kinda enough to take me back to my hotel to get my luggage and then drive me into the center of Rome. The whole experience was incredible from start to finish and I am in awe of the kindness and generosity that I was shown. I am so grateful to have been able to spend an entire day with her horses and am planning on coming back to Italy specifically to ride with her again. Alessia- thank you so much for everything!Written 1 June 2024

This was a truly wonderful experience! Despite having to wait for a while after the scheduled time, the experience was amazing! Our host, Alessia, was energetic and one of the friendliest people I've ever met. She took good care of me and my girlfriend as we learned what to do with the horses. We learned a lot about both the history of Ostia as well as horseback riding. I would recommend this to anyone who might be interested!

My girlfriend and I had the most memorable experience with Alessia and the horses. We fed, brushed, and learned all the basics of riding. The horses were perfect and Alessia was the greatest teacher/guide we could have asked for! The ride itself was as beautiful as you could imagine in the Italian countryside, through beautiful canopied woods, over the ruins, and into wildflower fields. It was so beautiful, in fact, that it made for the perfect place for my girlfriend to become my fiancée!! Alessia helped plan that all along, too!
This is a MUST DO experience.

Although we had to wait, we did enjoy the riding and I can easily say that this was the best commercial horse riding hikes I’ve ever had. My horse was absolutely amazing and I have nothing bad to say about him. Alessia is super friendly and made me feel very happy with her energy.
I was scared that as an advanced rider it will be bit boring and slow, but it was nothing alike I was experienced before. So totally reccomend to all riders, you’ll get the emotion.

Hi I have booked on this trip tomorrow where is the meeting point
Written 25 July 2019
She usually meets you at the coffee shop right outside the Ostia Antica train station. If you take the train, it takes you right there. If you drive there, it’s a little tricky to find.

Do you have any rides that a 10 year old and 13 year old could do (? Both have had riding lessons. (parents would also ride)
