About
Hi, my name is Matteo and thank you for being here!  In my family business we make Tuscan pottery since generations, and after achieving the Certificate of Excellence from Tripadvisor we decided to open our knowledge to everyone that is curious to discover that very ancient tradition and wants to learn its secrets. In a full immersive two/three hours class we will experience together all the process in ceramic making.  Our shop in town is like our house, it is open since twenty years and it will be a pleasure to share our passion with you. The factory is a bit outside the city (in case I will bring you there with my car) and is where we make the magic, and you will see how many hands handle one single ceramic from a piece of clay to a decorated majolica. Then I won't say more, it's a full-immersive experience that you have to feel with your eyes, your hands and your heart.

Grazie mille!!! È perfetto! The experience is perfect. We had been waiting for so long to come visit the shop and we are so happy to go!! Mateo makes us feel like family, and his parents are so wonderful. The tour of the factory was incredible, and there were so many interesting things to see! All of the potters and painters are so talented!
The pottery class was fun and I learned a lot, since it was my first time throwing a pot :)
We would definitely do this again, even just to visit the shop and the wonderful family of 4 people who run it. Grazie!!

A must if you’re in Tuscany!
Jun 2020 • Couples
My husband and I visited Italy in September 2019-We stayed in Florence and it was only a 20 minute train ride over to Montelupo. Matteo greeted us at the train station and took us over to his family’s shop. We were given a mini tour of their shop and shown pieces we could buy as well to have shipped back with our handmade pottery. We ordered a serving tray to be mailed to us in the US. Matteo’s dad is the master potter and was patient with us while we made our pieces. They arrived a few weeks later and it’s a great reminder of our trip.
Matteo also keeps in touch to see how we’re doing and it’s like making a new friend that’s 5k miles away.
I would totally go back if in the area.
And the town is super cute

Greatest Travel Experience of the past Quarter Century
Sep 2019
A hands on lesson for me and my husband from the great ceramicist, Salvatore Mirenda, in the showroom of dazzling majolica produced by him and artisans in their factory just outside town. It was our third visit, but our first experience with clay and wheel.

As Salvatore's hands guided our own to shape the spinning mound of clay, his welcoming family looked on: Matteo, Marketing Director and ebullient son; Betty, his charming wife and shop manager; and Marco, his second son, who joins Matteo in supervising production

You'll find a modern, world-class ceramics museum only three streets from the shop, where some of Salvatore's work is represented, along with majolica spanning five centuries-Montelupo supplied all manner of majolica ware to the Medici dynasty in Florence.

To Date, we've purchased a number of pieces from the Mirendas; two serving platters, a plate, decorated roof tile, trivet sized wall tiles, and this year, a bowl custom made to our order, now displayed in our modest Tuscan-themed kitchen. The pieces we don't carry home came to us quickly by mail in perfect condition.

An authentic artistic experience with great company
Aug 2019
Whether you are a beginner or an avid artist, the master artist will help to guide you to create your very own unique pottery piece. My husband and I went in August and based on the reviews really wanted to do this course. Matteo worked with my husband and his family's schedule to make the excursion happen. We got the opportunity to help see the creative process in developing a new line (which may be coming to a Pottery Barn near you ;)) and then went back to the shop and created our own pieces. The pieces we made are getting shipped to our home for FREE (including in the price of the excursion = AMAZING!) We are still waiting to receive our piece as it takes 2-3m, but we are greatly looking forward to adding them to our home decor. Truly taking a piece of Italy home with you!

Salvatore’s master class is unforgettable
Mar 2019 • Couples
I surprised my girlfriend with this class as part of our trip to Italy for her birthday. She had no idea where we were headed for the day as we walked the cobblestone streets of Florence towards the train station. We were to travel to Montelupo where Matteo would meet us. Unfortunately, the train conductor didn’t announce our arrival, and we realized our mistake as the train left the station and we read through the window, that had been our stop.

I called Matteo and he told us to get off the train at the next station, where he would come pick us up. We did, he did, and our adventure began. He took us from Empoli back to Montelupo explaining in only the most proud Italian way how his home town was the best of all Tuscany. Our fist stop was his family’s ceramics factory. We were taken through the entire process from the raw clay from the local river, to the hand making of each piece, to the giant kilns, to the hand painting. Each step was obviously done with passion, with each final product showing the pride of craftsmanship in each piece. We went upstairs to tour the showroom and select a few pieces to have shipped back with our own creations! We couldn’t resist and difficultly decided on a couple beautiful items that spoke to us.

We drove to the shop a few minutes away in downtown Montelupo and were welcomed by Matteo’s lovely parents, Betti and Salvatore. They were extremely friendly, Betti went down the street and came back with sweets and juice from the bakery. Salvatore set up the wheel and we each took our turn under the amazing guidance from master potter Salvatore to explain what to do, and what not to! We were both pleased with our rookie ceramic accomplishments and were excited to see the final products. We asked to have them painted to match the pieces we chose from the factory.

When they arrived, everything was packaged extremely well, and the pieces we made looked like they were from the same production line as the larger serving dishes. Of course, they inspired us to cook up an amazing Italian feast to break them in and remember such an amazing experience. I would encourage everyone visiting the region to put this on your “must do” list! Thanks again!!

Fantastic Family-Run Pottery Production
Jun 2019 • Friends
My best friend and I made the 30 minute train trip from Florence to Montelupo, to make pottery with Matteo and his father. We had an incredibly fun three hours, touring the factory, and making our own pottery with the help of the master potter. We also had the opportunity to order some custom pottery, which was an unexpected delight. And it did not in any way feel like a forceful sales pitch. They weren’t trying to hard sell us anything. Everyone was exceptionally friendly and it was clear that Matteo’s passion for his work drives him to go above and beyond. We really felt like part of the family for the afternoon. Can’t wait to receive our pieces in the mail!!
