About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- marinek2270 contributionsExcellent CompanyTruly a once in a lifetime experience for people all ages, would definitely come again if given the opportunity. Prices might seem steep but are reasonable considering that everything(accomodations, meals, drinks) are included. The guides are knowledgable and kind, and they do their best to ensure the best experience for us travelers. Special thanks to our guides, Ben and Edward. Asante Sana!Written 23 March 2024
- terenw20240 contributionsExcellent safariI had a 5 days safari tour in February 2024, 3 days in Serengeti and last day in Ngorongoro crater, very lucky to be in the migration period and we saw almost all the possible animals. It was one of the best tour I have ever experienced, Shrike safaris was perfectly organised, very easy to comunicate with them for the organisation and everything, during the tour the guide was very confident and ready to help with everything. We had an unforeseen in the Ngorongoro but they were very good to reorganise my trip. I really recommend them for an unforgettable safari experienceWritten 6 March 2024
- JOJO60 contributionsShrike Safaris Earned All the Stars! The experience with Shrike was excellent from start to finish. They aim to please and offer a very personal and memorable experience. Communication was great even before we left the US to get there. I felt very comfortable doing business with Mark. Their price was very reasonable, as well. Visiting Serengeti has been a dream of mine since I was about 7 or 8 years old. Watching animals shows with my dad was a favorite past time. We didn’t have a lot of time and wanted to maximize our stay in Zanzibar. and visit Serengeti. Mark delivered top notch service from start to finish. He arranged pick up from the airport in Mwanza and got us sorted at hotel that he recommended. We met with him in person and he was asked us what we dreamed of seeing. My husband can be a tough customer, but Mark’s excellent service won him over. Our driver, Henry was also amazing. We had a night of excellent food and service at the recommended hotel: Henry picked us up promptly at 5:30 am and we were off. We stopped for breakfast at campsite run by a local family. The eggs, pancake and fresh passion fruit and avocado juice was delicious. We were warmly welcomed with Tanzanian hospitality and wished we could have spent more time there. The drive to Serengeti was scenic and educational. Henry shared all of the facts as we drove. We learned quite a bit about the local way of life. As a school administrator I was very intrigued by the many school children all dressed in uniform walking to school. We arrived at Serengeti around 8:30 AM. Within a couple of hours, we were able to see most of what we came to see. We had seen so much, we had an early lunch. It was quite tasty. The beauty of Serengeti was all that I dreamed. As I allowed the wind to blow across my face as I stood atop and looked out from the Land Rover’s top, I felt immensely blessed to have had this experience. Mark and Henry with Shrike earned all of the stars.Written 29 October 2023

- tracysA729ZY0 contributionsAwesome!!!Custom trip starting and ending in Arusha, with Denis as our guide. Denis was fantastic - sharing his knowledge about the animals and the area. Always felt safe with him. Went to Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire on 6 day custom tour. Lucky to see the Big 5, plus so many other amazing animals and sights. Food and accomodation great (mid-range). Loved it, and would do it again! Mark was great in planning the trip with us. Very thankful to have had such a great experience.Written 2 October 2023
- haylean20230 contributionsThe BEST safari operator in TanzaniaMy husband and I are incredibly thankful to Shrike for all that they did to make our honeymoon in Tanzania one of the best trips of our lives. Shrike is one of those companies you can trust. During the planning, they were easy to communicate with and Mark and Bob always responded to my countless emails (sorry!). Shrike was very willing to tailor the trip to exactly what we wanted, including hiking Ol Doinyo Lengai, and Empakai Crater. They welcomed us at the Kilimanjaro airport and we immediately knew we were with good people. The guides they select are also the BEST. We were fortunate to have Dixon as our guide during our safari, who ensured that we saw as many animals as we could (got the big 5!). We also appreciated Dixon's careful driving (the streets of Arusha can be crazy!), and willingness to explain the animal's behavior as we observed. We truly learned SO much. Simon was our guide in Zanzibar and he was incredibly hospitable and welcomed us graciously to his island. Our tour of Stone Town was very interesting and we learned lots! Shrike booked all of our accommodations during our 2 week trip and we were impressed with every single one. The hospitality in Tanzania is top-notch. They even surprised my husband with a bottle of wine and cake on his birthday. My husband and I have never booked a travel company prior to Shrike, as we are typically more of a do-it-yourself couple, but we were SO glad we did for this trip. I will be recommending Shrike Safaris to all of our friends and family. Thank you Mark and team!Written 30 September 2023
- oMagdalenao0 contributionsAmazing safari day trip to MikumiAmazing experience. Everything was as planned, and on time. Very quick responses to plan the safari. I totally recommend. 1-day safari to Mikumi included driving to so many different spots, I was able to see many animals. There were also meal breaks. The driver was really attentive and informative.Written 29 June 2023
- 562frederikh0 contributionsMachame routeMy friend and I was going to trek Kilimanjaro on the Machameroute 7 days and the trek was amazing! We are happy that we did 7 days instead of 6, because you then have good time to relax and acclimatise, so the chance for having a great trek to the summit is bigger. The team was really nice and helpful every time we had a question and it seems like they had a good overview of everything, and as we could see also treated all employees good and respectful. Overall we had the best time and are never going to forget the trek. A tip is to look at the internet for a good packing list and try to find it used or bring it from home, because it’s expensive from new and to rent is also expensive but really good things you getWritten 21 June 2023
- 35jellam0 contributionsvery niceIt was a really really nice trip!! Very well organized and the driver had a lot of knowledge. We also saw so many animals, I would have never thought. But only 4 out of 5 because they told me other people were coming on the trip as well which was not true.Written 6 March 2023
- funvacy0 contributionsThe wonder of SerengetiOur Tanzania trip from airport pick-up to drop-off which included the Serengeti, Ngorongoro safari and Zanzibar beach holiday was organised by Shrike. Our point of contact was Mark and he did an amazing job with attention to the smallest details making it a memorable and stress free vacation!! Our safari guide was Denis who is friendly, entertaining and knowledgeable. He made sure we saw the 'Big 5' , wildbeest/zebra migration and spotted a whole lot of animals and birds. We even caught a rainbow 🌈. The safari is in itself an unforgettable experience with the endless plains of Serengeti stretching as far as the eyes can see but the warmth and smiles of the local people embraces and cocoons you. For a customised trip where you are taken care of always and made to feel special Shrike is the way to go!!Written 24 January 2023
- annaiL9867WN0 contributionsSafari with ShrikeWe had an amazing safari with Shrike. We enjoyed a trip from Arusha, through Ngorogoro, Serengeti to Mwanza, full of lovely lodges, amazing nature from tentcamps, the big five, the big migration and our guide Chacha could tell us a lot about both animals and plants. He was a very good guide, very skilled, and knowing when to tell a story and engage in a conversation. We where very much included in the planning of the trip, which was adjusted to our specific wishes. Furthermore, the car was well equiped - the good binocular did a big difference. The only thing that was a bit confusing was the tips. Even though the agreement stated that tips where paid, it seemed like the people at the accomodation still expected tips. But as was the the only concern, i must give my warm recommendation to use Shrike!Written 20 December 2022

- Manima4210 contributionsUnforgettable ExperienceShrike safari provided a luxury experience for our group from start to finish. Experiencing a safari is a life altering occurrence, but it is an even better experience with such a great company. As an initial matter, the scheduling and logistics were seamless. Shrike accommodated our dietary restrictions (vegan) and provided an unforgettable dining experience of eating breakfast and lunch in the midst of the beauty that is the Serengeti. As a bonus, we had an extremely knowledgeable tour guide, Mark, who made it his mission to ensure we saw the “Big 5” and so much more. Once our private plane landed in the Serengeti, we were immediately greeted by Giraffes. Next, we were captivated by Lions, Cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes and hippopotamus in addition to antelopes, zebras, baboons, impalas, mongooses, ostriches and too many birds to name! Shrike Safaris and Mark made this trip one to remember.Written 10 October 2022
- Angeldjv0 contributionsAwesome 4 days Camping SafariWe went on a 4 day camping Safari with Shrike from Mwanza to Arusha. We visited Serengeti and Ngorongoro. We had a lot of fun and saw many different animals. Their attitude was always very good. Our guide Paul tried his best to show us all the animals and Jamal cooked us really good food. Mark also did a great job briefing us before the trip. Overall, we had a great experience with Shrike and we would definitely recommend them.Written 16 September 2022
- 313beccag0 contributionsAvoid this company - cannot be trustedA word of warning to anyone thinking of booking a safari with Shrike; an untrustworthy and deceitful company. I lived in Tanzania for many years and booked to go on safari in April 2020, because of the pandemic the safari was postponed. I waited patiently for over two years and trusted their reassurance that my safari would be rearranged. After reopening in June 2022, I was in contact with Shrike once more, a very slow back and forth which ended up with me running out of time and having to return to the UK. Shrike assured me that I would be able to get my money refunded and that was the start of countless dates being promised and then broken for the money to be returned to my account. I have been in contact with the Shrike offices and the director Mark himself. I have now been waiting for 2 months for the money to be returned to me and they are now ignoring me. I am writing this review as a warning for others. This company cannot be trusted.Written 5 September 2022

I did the 1-day Safari in the Serengeti in early November, leaving from Mwanza. I was paired up with an Aussie tourist for the trip (which cut down on the cost!), and we were led by a guide/driver named Emili.
We left town around 5:30am, and after grabbing some breakfast arrived at the park around 8-9ish. I was struck but the sheer quantity of wildlife we saw! We saw many baboons, zebras, wildebeests, buffalo, warthogs, hippos, crocs, and giraffes. We also found a group of 2 lions resting up in a tree, and a pride of 5 lions resting in the shade under a tree. I was keen to see elephants and leopards, and maybe some other big cats, but alas we did not spot any that day.
Would definitely recommend Mark's company to anyone else doing a safari.

Had a nice weekend organised by Shrike Safaris,
booked the trio two days before leaving, everything worked well with the company and received good service.
My guide Innocent was polite and good company to drive around the park, unfortunately there some heavy rains which denied us crossing some rivers but other activities made it up.
Good and reliable organiser, easy to recommend!

I was in Mwanza for a two week volunteer work assignment, and wanted to visit the Serengeti on the weekend. I am very grateful to have found Shrike prior to my leaving. The owner, Mark, gave me prompt, helpful answers to every question I asked. He picked me up personally and right on time at my hotel to take me to the gates of the Serengeti, where I met with my wonderful guide, Baraka. The tour was far beyond my expectations, the accommodation was wonderful, and the animal viewing spectacular! As a woman travelling alone, I felt safe and comfortable, and fully enjoyed the stories that these young men shared with me on my trip. I highly recommend the Shrike Safaris Mwanza family!

Decided on Shrike 2-day safari from Mwanza based on tripadvisor reviews. Very happy that I did. Mark was extremely helpful in coordinating everything and kept in touch by Whatsapp. Emili was an excellent driver and guide who knew where to find all the animals we wanted to see. Mgalageti Lodge, where we spent the night was beautiful and the staff were lovely. The food was also great and the sunrise spectacular. We thoroughly enjoyed our time and got to see so many animals, especially giraffe, hippos, lions, and even a leopard and cheetah! I would highly recommend Shrike for excellent service and value.

Shrike Safaris arranged a tailor made trip to fit our itinerary at a more affordable price than many. They were flexible and followed our requests booking the accommodation that we had selected through our own research. The Toyota vehicle was an older vehicle with only lap seat belts when we would have preferred a full cross seatbelt but it was excellent for standing up and viewing the wildlife. "Emily " was our driver and guide. He was extremely hard working and very friendly - He had excellent English and a good knowledge of the Serengeti and it's wildlife. We enjoyed his company for the two days we were with him. He was a safe driver and he went out of his way to make sure we saw as much wildlife as possible, never rushing us when we were taking photographs and spotting and pointing out many animals and birds which we would not have seen other wise. The Serengeti at the Western edge is incredible - a wild empty space brim full of Wildebeest,Zebra,Hyena, eagle, baboon. We didn't see lion on this trip but we had seen them in the Ngorogoro and Tarangeri both of which we would recommend over and above the Serengeti for ease of seeing wildlife if you have to chose, however do all three to get a full experience of what Tanzania as to offer.. Over all we would recommend Shrike Safaris with Emily as your guide.

We decided to choose Shrike out of just reading reviews from tripadvisor and im sure glad we did.
Stayed at a hotel in Mwanza (Lahe) and we agrees with the tour leder mark that he would pick us up at 0830 the next day. At 0825 next morning, Mark arrived. You should meet this guy, master of conversation and just generally a really nice guy. And im happy about that, since we are spending the next three hours on the road. This guy has been a safari guide for many years and also been a guide to climbers on the great Mount Kilimanjaro.
The ride down to the serengeti gate went smoothly, he asked us during the ride what we wanted for lunch, and this lunch was ready for us just as we came. No waiting. We ate the lunch, said goodbye to Mark(as he was just driving us there) and said hello to our Safari Guide Mr. Godson. This guy is brilliant. Polite, fun, and he knows everything about everything that lives and breathes on the vast plains of the Serengeti. Hope that you get Godson as your guide. The first day of the safari we saw so many different animals, Godson knew excactly where to find them. The high of the day is when he found us a pride of no less than 15 lions (from what we could count).
As the sun was almost set, we got to our accommodation for the night. The luxorious five star Serena tented camp where we saw a magical sunset over the serengeti. The next day, we encountered even more exciting animals, huge tower of giraffes, big crashes of hippos. Crocodiles,. We even got to see a cheetah hunting a thomson gazele. Unfortunatly for the cheetah, and fortunatly for the gazele, there where no kill this day. But truly an awe inspirering experience.
Next was lunch at the Serena tent camp.
We where supposed to go to Musuma after the safari, which is three hours on from serengeti gate (and six hours from mwanza) And Mr. Godson drove us there. Free of charge.
My experience with shrike safari couldn't be better, and I warmly recomend them to everyone.

Thank you for taking the time to write such an amazing review - It is so rewarding to hear about your special experiences with Shrike Safaris. Thank you for your kind words about Kirawira Serena Luxury Camp, we will certainly share these with the Manager and his team. Godson, your safari guide is a favorite choice with many guests- he knows unique places in the Serengeti where you can actually have a wonderful game viewing. We hope to welcome you back soon very soon!

We had a safari booked through Shrike safaris. I was constantly in touch with Mark prior to booking. He gave us a lot of options which could fit in the budget, accommodate elderly as well as really an infant and toddler. Our driver was named Cha cha and was prompt when he picked us up from our hotel in Mwanza. He had a very vast knowledge of Serengeti and the surroundings. We saw a lion resting on the way out and he took the car really close for us to take a picture. We stayed at the kirawara Serena luxury camp and it was beautiful. Food was amazing. Totally catered for vegetarians. Thank you Mark for suggesting Kirawara for our stay. It has been an amazing experience. If we do go to Tanzania again we would definitely book again through Shrike. A massive thanks to all of you over there.
Kind regards,

We were delighted with our safari! Henry our driver/guide was excellent and spotted many animals which we would not have seen if he hadn’t been there! The organisation was first class and our night at the Mgalageti Lodge was superb - what a beautiful place to stay! We had a magical experience on safari and would thoroughly recommend Shrike to anyone considering doing this in Tanzania.
