A good guide, a great man
Aug 2019
After being 2 months working in Ethiopia, my family decided to come to visit me and we travelled around the north of Ethiopia. We met Haile in Wukro and shared a great experience.
We spend all day with Haile to visit 2 churches in Gheralta ( Abreha Atsheba and Yohannes Maeqdi) . He adapted the route so that my family could do it
Before leaving Wukro I needed to visit a project in the Hospital of Wukro and Haile helped me with everything, thank you my friend!

Great Tigray
Sep 2019 • Couples
We were so lucky to enjoy one day with the company and great knowledgement of this friendly guy, Haile.
He made everything easy, and tried (and achieved) to make the visit as interesting as possible.
No doubt, if you can, hire his services. It's worth it.
Thanks for everything, my friend!!!

I had a Fantastic time!!

Haile is such a great guide! He was waiting for me at airport the minute I landed. He was friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the churches and the area in general. He even shared his home cooked lunch with me under a giant sycamore tree. I couldn’t have asked for a better guide through Tigray.

Knowledgeable and Flexible Guide
Dec 2019
Haile Selassie was our guide for a 5 day trip to Mekele and Gheralta Rock. Our group had a 68 year old and a 4 year old and Haile Selassie was able to tailor the tour experience to ensure everyone had a great time. He knows a lot about the area and the churches, and everyone also seems to know him. He can provide detailed explanations of the history of each church as well as the paintings and carvings. We were very glad to have Haile Selassie as our guide in Tigray.

Some tips for independent travellers
Dec 2019
To aid other travellers coming on their own with no tour operator to help:
For exploration of churches you need some people. They may seem many and overlapping, but you will need thems to get around, find the way and interact with people you meet, unless you speak perfect Tigrinia. More importantly, I think that "all these fees" increase the contribution tourism makes to the local community and the interest of the local people in keeping and showing their heritage.
a) a vehicle and driver, we used the contacts of the Geralta lodge
b) a guide. This is a person who knows about the churches. He materliased along the way, likely called by the driver. Government fixed price was said to be 715 ETB/day for the day going to Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor. Our guide had a limited knowledge of English but interacted well and knew the churches. There is a system of "clusters" and if you want to go elsewhere that would mean a new guide, or no guide if appropriate. I think guides are mandatory in many places.
c) a scout. This local person waiting on site will help you to find the way, and also hold your balance and, sometimes, get up at all! Try to understand how many you need and be clear on that. Pay the scouts(s)as you find suitable. We hade one scout for 4 people for a walk of 3 hours and paid ETB 300, he was a great help and spoke good English.

The fees to the churches add up 200-300/person. Priests and monks may expect a 5 or a 10 bill note, so have a bunch of those in the pocket.

Good, reliable, knowledgeable guide in Tigray
Mar 2019
We had two trips during two years to Tigray region (it was connected with the scientific exploration of christian art in rock-hewn churches).
We used services of Haile Sellasie twice as he is really reliable and knowledgeable person. He can also arrange a transport for you (cheaper than hotels can offer).
He know a lot about the churches and can make your trip better there.

We visited Tigray during the rainy season. Haile has excellent knowledge of the area, and provided us with so much information about the churches and the region. He was a safe and courteous guide who tailored our experience to meet our particular needs. We Haile recommend him! ;)
