        An Unforgettable Experience
We had a great experience on our water tour. We first explored the glacier lake before rafting down level III rapids. Our guide Leo was very knowledgeable about the area and water. We were also assisted by Cesar.

        McCarthy River Run
Excellent guides made the trip feel safe and fun. Jumping into the glacier lake (in a full dry suit) was exhilarating and refreshing before taking on some class 3 rapids.

        Amazing guide team
5 stars for the team. Veronica, Ron, Anne Marie and Cesar were the best guides. We were made to feel like a child again. Had so much fun visiting an amazing wild country side and fun river. This is the wild untamed Alaska that we have been searching for in our travels.

        7-Day Copper River Float!
Rafting 100 miles of Alaska's Copper River is not for the faint of heart. It's hard to overstate the number of variables that are outside of your control—weather, wild animals, river hazards, accidents, etc. You DEFINITELY want to be with experienced, competent guides. McCarthy River Tours provided just that—our guides had dozens of multi-day trips and hundreds of "river days" under their belts. They were highly skilled in navigating the complex currents of the river, provided EXCELLENT service and hospitality, and made the whole trip an absolute blast. 10/10 would go again deep into the Alaskan bush with this company!

        Great time kayaking!
The tour was customized for us. John, our guide, was very helpful in helping us get into our dry suits and explaining what to expect on the short hike to the lake we were Kayaking on. Not only was he exceptionally knowledgeable about the history of McCarthy and the mountains and glaciers we were seeing, but had lots of information of the geology of the area. He told us about local plants. John is very skilled, patient and kind. We loved every minute of our Four hour adventure!

        Great experience, great guide!
fabulous! John is a great guide. Thorough, excellent explanations, safety first, AND fun. We were outfitted with dry suits (crucial safety gear, as an unexpected “swim” is always possible in the icy river), life jackets, and helmets. The safety instructions were clear and concise. Had a ball rafting the rapids, and always felt we were in good hands- so we could really enjoy the experience!! Thank you!

        Rafting the remote Copper River
We rafted the remote Copper River for 7 days with guides Marlon, Jake, and Brakyn. The trip had beautiful scenery floating through the Chugach Mountains and included our last two nights camped in front of the Childs Glacier which was cracking and calving alot during our stay -that was spectacular. The guides did a great job selecting campsites, making delicious meals for us, and stopping at or pointing out highlights along the river. The company provided very nice sleeping bags, pads and tents for our use. We were in very capable hands! We saw one brown bear, and lots of eagles and seals. Bring warm clothes!

        Great time!
My family highly enjoyed our rafting trip. Ron was personable and knowledgeable. I haven’t seen my kids smile so much as when we got doused by the rapids.

Super Duper Alaskan outdoor rafting adventure!!!
Did the 7 day copper river float from Chitna to Cordova with Bracken, Jake and TL Marlon. Outstanding guides, very knowledgeable about the River and local history, friendly, good people to spend a week with. Great food, unbelievable scenery; seeing the Child’s glacier calving into the Copper River was a once in a lifetime bucket list experience! My only criticism would be the sleeping pad that was to short for my 6’ 4” height.

        Get on the river!
If you want to get in the water and have fun in an afternoon, this is your tour. We had zero experience but we’re Alaskans vacationing in Alaska and decided to check out rafting in McCarthy. We had a blast! The guides, Johnny with the hair, Lily, and Violet answered every question and made everything fun. Violet was our guide in our raft and was the perfect guide, between talking up how fun McCarthy was, teaching us Rafting 101, and telling us how much fun guides have on river trips in AK. They do have fun; the enthusiasm was contagious. We would definitely consider another trip with them and have our eyes on a multi day. Why come to Alaska if you’re not getting on the water?!

        Super fun glacier rafting!
We took the 4 Hour Kennicott glacier lake & river raft tour, it was super fun with viewing of Kennicott glacier and icebergs floating in the lake. Our guide Lily is truly knowledgeable and fun at the same time, gave us lots of info about the place and helped my wife to clean up her skin burn (suffered prior to the tour). She recommended a nice place to eat as well, making the whole trip so much more enjoyable!

Tour:7 day copper trip Chitna to Cordova This trip was more spectacular than I ever dreamed. Sarah Lindsay and Ron were amazing guides. Their knowledge of the history (we were even read some history before Abercrombie falls) , the river and how to make camping masterpiece meals made it that much more memorable. They were so calm and relaxed they became ohana instead of guides. This trip has the landscape we all come to Alaska for…that last frontier. Then you add to that paddling through an iceberg field and watching spectacular calving from a glacier at your campsite!! It was perfection. Another great fact was that there was not another single person on this river it’s amazingly pristine. Then at quaint Cordova awaits you at the takeout. If you are longing to get away from it all and enjoy the outdoors like you never have McCarthy River tours has the perfect adventure for you. Everyone from the staff that answers the phones and is so patient to answer my 1000 questions (Chris) to the man with all the answers (Nic has great suggestions on how to get there amd where to stay in Cordova ) to the guides (Sarah Lindsay, Ron) you can’t go wrong with McCarthy River tours if you go somewhere else your trip will not be as spectacular and memorable as if you had gone with McCarthy. So whatever you are doing when you read this review just call them up and schedule a tour. I highly recommend the copper 7 day tour! In fact my entire ohana (2 daughters, SIL, and boyfriend) are avid Colorado, Utah, Idaho, New Mexico, etc whitewater rafters and they said it was a trip of a lifetime! So don’t wait just call Nic and set up a trip!

We went for the glacier walk with beautiful weather late July.
The walk on the glacier is spectacular as it gives amazing views to the surrounding mountains and the different shapes and colors of the ice and crevasses around.
While it was warm on the way to the glacier, it was much cooler once on the glacier. So take at least two layers to manage the change of temperature.

We had a wonderful time hiking to and on the glacier. We booked last minute due to weather and they were very accommodating. Our guide John was terrific and we enjoyed our day with him very much. He shared his knowledge of the area and glaciers, fitted us with equipment and instructed us well on how to stay safe. Great experience! We're so glad we did this!

I booked a Root Glacier hike with Johnny and boy am I glad I did! I normally would forego a formal tour and take a hike by myself, and I'm happy that I did the opposite this time.

Johnny was an awesome guide! He was patient, informative, and since we were the only two people on the glacier at 8 AM in the morning, he took me around to all of the good picture taking spots. He showed me some of the remnants of the Gold Rush systems that exist on the mountainside to the right of the glacier; that was cool! I got some really amazing photos of the ice fall and other glacial structures and he even helped me fill my Camelback with delicious glacier water! He was super knowledgeable about the area, about the Root glacier structure (as well as the surrounding Kennicott glacier), and about the history of the surrounding area.
It was truly an amazing and unforgettable experience and I'm glad I got a super cool and relatable guide like Johnny!

My wife and myself took the 1/2 day root glacier hike with our guide Emily. She was amazing. She was very knowledgeable about the geology, mining, glaciers and the local flora. She was always pleasant and helpful with us two old retirees. We both highly recommend both the company and her specifically

An amazing view of a real live glacier. A scenic hike along the historic mining town of Kennicott takes you to the bottom of the root glacier where you strap on supplied crampons to hike around a beautiful white ice glacier with the option to swim in a glacial pool. Knowledgeable guides keep you informed about your surroundings and the history of the old mining town.

We went on the Root Glacier Hike with our daughter and her friend. This was his first trip to Alaska. We live in the area, and had been to McCarthy many times, but had never been to Root Glacier. Walking on the glacier was a highlight for all of us. We had a great hike. The glacier was amazing. Our guide, Johnny, was informative, helpful, and outgoing. As a bonus, he took beautiful pictures with our camera and cell phones. We saw guides from another outfit with large groups of people and we were sure glad we selected McCarthy River Tours; since it was just the four of us and our guide, we could go at our own pace and fully explore the area. Thank you, Johnny!

Here’s the truth, folks: There are a few companies in the area that book tours of the Root, but this company has individualized service, and it is totally worth the negligible amount of money. This July I booked a 7:00am private tour, and Amanda was my guide. It was just the two of us on the glacier. By the time we got off the glacier, other companies with much larger groups were arriving. Nothing against big groups, but if you want to move quickly, see more, and get a personalized experience, I highly recommend this company. And if you can get Amanda, you will not be disappointed. She was funny, wickedly smart and knowledgeable, and a perfect guide. It was an experience I will never forget.
