About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Diane D0 contributionsAmazing experience with great tour guideAdrian was our tour guide and did an excellent job. So informative. We learned about the local birds and the boat brought us up close and personal with the crocodiles. Touched “Mike Tyson’s” tale. Highly recommend this tour.Written 1 August 2022
- Passport4804360 contributionsLots of crocsThe tour was great, the guys there were uber nice (they even picked us up in Tarcoles since we had no car and had mistaken the tour place and the office). We saw a lot of birds and of course, crocs, and felt safe every time during the tour. We strongly recommend!Written 28 May 2022
- Cruiser461770 contributionsProfessionalism and pride summarizes this wonderful organization! Our guide, Juan Carlos, was outstanding! It was obvious he was there to please us as he told our group about the fauna, flora, and ecology of the Tarcoles region. He knew the river well and pointed out numerous crocodiles, both large and small, and his keen eyes spotted many birds and plants that interested us. He was very patient if we wanted to get more quality photos of any particular bird species, and was ready with habitat and life history information on the various species we encountered. The lady at the ticket counter was extremely gracious as we checked in for our tour, and later as we bought some souvenirs. The rest rooms were very clean, and the little restaurant served excellent meals as well. Overall, it was very evident that this facility was well-run by very caring and professional hosts. We were very impressed by the entire organization and cleanly facility!Written 31 December 2021
- ALLSLC0 contributionsMind-blowing!What a great day on the river. Our boat captain did a wonderful job accommodating an entire photography group who wanted to take a million pictures of everything. Found lots of birds and of course crocodiles. We also saw Jesus Christ lizards. There was a flock of scarlet macaws after we finished. The lunch was outstanding. Super fun day and got tons of life birds for my listWritten 19 December 2021
- Brenda B0 contributions34 Bird Species Seen!Very enjoyable place! The tour guide was knowledgeable about the birds on a very pleasant calm boat ride. I also liked the large gift shop with many toilets available. I tried a free sample of delicious Costa Rican coffee while watching dancers perform.Written 24 July 2020
- RKPhoto0 contributionsDon’t miss this tour! The Tarcoles River is a great place to see lots of wildlife, and the knowledgeable guides at Jungle Crocodile Safari will make sure you see all of it!Written 5 March 2020
- bradalad0 contributionsGreat guide and tourThe whole family enjoyed this river cruise. Just remember, seeing crocodiles isn't guaranteed. We loved our guide and driver. The gift shop felt a little too over-the-top and some of the items were quite expensive.Written 13 February 2020
- Kevin P0 contributionsFor the birds...One reviewer said it earlier...lots of birds and a few (small) crocs. It was an enjoyable tour and we saw in interesting species.....just wish we could have photographed some close, large crocs.Written 12 February 2020
- kimp48960 contributionsLots of birds and a few croc'sHad a great time, very relaxing views of tons of different birds plus a few crocs. Plus short ride up into mangroves. Very beautiful and overall a nice trip!Written 12 February 2020
- Mikki K0 contributionsAmazing experienceWe had a great birding safari! We were lucky to get a private tour, allowing us to focus in our interests. Hanzel our guide was great! Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the wildlife. Would definitely recommend going with Hanzel. A worthwhile tour if you're in the area!Written 28 January 2020
- 603samanthad0 contributionsFabulous! We stopped here on our journey from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio. Lunch was lovely and then we boarded a boat. There were two crocodiles next to the jetty and we spent a while watching them. Then we went up and down the river looking for more crocs and the most amazing birdlife. Very peaceful. It was Christmas Eve and very quiet!Written 7 January 2020
- Charlie D0 contributionsBest Boat or Birds!I've tried multiple boats in Tarcoles and Jungle Crocodile Safari is by far the best for finding and photographing birds! I've been on the river 8 times now and usually photograph 30 or more species of birds!Written 29 December 2019
- anglaisefrancaise0 contributionsSurprised how goodWe did a tour in the afternoon and we felt like we had the river to ourselves. We saw plenty of crocodiles both in the river and in the bank. We even saw monkeys which was an added bonus. The real stars of the show though were the birds. Our guide was really knowledgeable and I do mean that. When their knowledge extends not simply to naming birds but telling you about their biology you know you are in good hands! I had seen reports of feeding of crocodiles so I had been worried that this may feel like a zoo experience but that was not at all the case. This was a calm nature tour and we thoroughly enjoyed it.Written 27 December 2019
- K254CFtimp0 contributionsExpensive gift shop. It’s a shame that such an enjoyable tour us remembered for an expensive gift shop but it’s a captive audience and they take advantage of it. The tour in the boat was great fun with lots of birds and, as hoped, a couple of crocodiles to make the tour complete. Very knowledgable guide who pointed out the interesting aspects on the nearby river banks and river. Very enjoyable ‘safari’.Written 8 December 2019
- John M0 contributionsFriendly guides and gift shopWe have done this tour many times and keep sending family and friends and joining them when we can. Always fun.Written 9 October 2019

If you are in this area this your is an absolute must! Try and book the last tour of the day as you then get to see the most glorious sunset from the mouth of the river. Numerous bird species to be pointed out and identified by experienced and knowledgeable guides as well as the stars of the show - the crocodiles. Several of these are 15ft long or larger and come right up to the boat - just don't be tempted to lean over and give them a pat!

We booked to do a group tour, however there was no one else booked for the tour at the 1:30pm session. Adrian was our tour guide and was very knowledgable and great at explaining everything, as well as the boat driver was great at getting us so close. Touched Mike Tyson the 92 year old crocodile and saw lots and lots of birds! Definitely recommend. Also if you wanted to do it cheaper than $55 we did it for $35 by getting the public bus for 20-30 mins from Jaco and they organised for a taxi to come pick us up and take us to the river.

We had a private boat tour for 2,5hours and we have seen a lot of animals. From the roosting spots of the pelicans, snowy egrets, cormorants to big american crocodiles, caracaras and fregat birds.
Since it was a private boat the captain made sure we had the perfect position, as close as possible to the animals with the perfect light and background to make good pictures.
You get a small booklet with all the birds you can see during the trip and the captai mentions every bird by number and can explain more about them. Our 2 kids were vrey interested listening to him.
The expereince was wonderfull and we would do it again.
At the end you can visit a large souvenir shop but things are really expensive there.

My group of six experienced this adventure as an Holland American Line shore excursion - docked in the commercial port of Puerto Caldera, not the coastal town of Puntarenas. The naturalist was extremely knowledgeable, personable, and was super great at spotting & identifying birds. We saw over 20 species of tropical as well as migratory birds, ten pairs of scarlet macaws, and at least a dozen crocs - including this big ‘un. Such a fun morning enjoying nature.

Disturbed the crocodiles for the fun of tourists. They brought the boats so close to the crocodiles that we were literally on top of them then THREW ROCKS AT THEM to get them to move. This ruined the experience for me because there were so many your boats on the river and if all boats did this then the crocodiles would never get 5 minutes of peace to rest or eat or mate.
The birdwatching was amazing, guide really knowledgeable on birds and made it fun with 'bird bingo'. If they respected the crocodiles space a little more then this would have been a 5/5 tour.

Our experience could not have been more different than the other reviewer. After booking online via Trip Advisor for our group of 6 (4 adults, 2 kids - ages 10 and 9), we were welcomed at the shop and offered complimentary juice, water, coffee or tea. We had a wonderful tour with Hanzel. He was extremely knowledgeable and personable and we learned a lot from him. He enthusiastically answered our questions and helped us take some beautiful photos.
I would definitely recommend this experience - and Hanzel - to friends visiting Costa Rica and the area.

I have been on a lot of wildlife tours in my life but particularly the last 10 years or so. This was quite simply one of the best tours I have ever been on. The quantity and quality of the bird species we saw was amazing. We got great multiple looks at at least 10 species of large birds (in addition to the crocodiles).
Our guide Hansel was awesome. He knew how to engage in discussion at the right level about the birds we were seeing and could answer complex questions that we threw at him. I'd go with these guys again and again.
There are some negative reviews on this site about this company. I have to say that our experience was completely unlike those reviews. We were extremely satisfied with our experience. Money totally well spent.

Adrian was an awesome guide!!! He spotted birds and other animals we couldn't see without his help. He was full of interesting facts and showed our group so many of Costa Rica's living treasures and how they are important to preserve and why. The boat driver was very skilled and got us right up to many crocs on the shore and in the water with many photo opportunities. Highly recommend it!

I had always wanted to do a crocodile tour but I’m handicapped and need help getting around.. Jungle Crocodiles Tours was extremely gracious and accommodating and provided a wheelchair to the boat.
Our tour guide, Gustavo was a joy. We were amazed at his ability to spot birds and identify them on our bird guide. We learned a lot and saw a variety of birds including Red McCaws.
Best of all we saw a mother crocodile and her babies. Gustavo was outstanding at finding crocodiles and they slowed the boat snd steered so we were able to get great photos.
The passion of 5he staff was infectious and I highly recommend this tour.

Booked a private tour for the 4 of us (only $15 more per person than a group tour) and got to leave early (7:30 am) before other tours started. It was perfect. The birds are out early, the crocodiles were out on the banks in the sun to get warm. Our guide Juan Carlos was super. Great at spotting and great at explaining.
The boats are covered, so sun is not an issue. Having the whole boat to ourselves meant we could move around in the seats to get better views and photos. A perfect tour!
And we thoroughly enjoyed the large gift shop when we got back.

Will you pick up and drop off at my hotel Best Western at Jaco?
Written 17 April 2022
Can we book this and meet at the meeting location if we are staying a nearby hotel and not coming from a cruise?
Written 21 January 2020
You do not need to be booked on a cruise line. Assuming you have transportation, the river cruise terminal is very accessible by good roads and details are available on the website. There is ample parking. The river cruises go at 08:30,10:30, 13:30 and 15:30 and ours very well narrated and we saw an abundance of reptilian and avian wildlife although that is not guaranteed as an absolute certainty by the company. Based on our experience, we highly recommend this tour.
The boats are covered with a canopy but sunscreen is still a good idea as there is some sun exposure and mosquitoes were not a problem on the day we were there - you might want to check on that in advance but normally they come out at night and are a bit more prevalent on cloudy days but repellent is a good thing to have handy just in case..
Hope this helps.
