      Amazing experience, amazing guide.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing by itself is beautiful, but our guide is made the day special. Thank you so much Kenny, you brought the whole experience to another level.

Once in a life time adventure with outstanding scenery.
Guided walk through stunning volcanic landscapes. Not for the faint hearted. The walk is long and physically challenging with some tricky downhill sections on scree slopes with quite loose terrain. Take all the advice you are given about being prepared. Wear good walking boots and take extra care not to slip on the scree slopes, the loose rocks are very abrasive. We walked from Pukeonake to Ketetahi and considered this to be the best direction to walk in, althought the walk can be done in the opposite direction.

      Something we’ll always remember!
We had an amazing experience on the 2-hour pre-sunset guided group walk with Kayla! She was absolutely wonderful—such a kind and pleasant person with a great character that made the walk even more enjoyable. The scenery was stunning, and the timing just before sunset made it truly magical. We highly recommend this experience, especially with Kayla as your guide!

      A must do experience
Had a fantastic hike with a small group led by Stu. The safety checks before we went, together with the advice given about what to take and wear meant the day went smoothly. It is a challenging hike and you need to be fit for it, but it is so worth it as the views are stunning and the sense of achievement huge. Stu encouraged us along the way, checked we were doing OK and kept us informed about points of interest and background info on the trail. If you are fit enough just do it and do it with this company. They are so professional and will keep you safe whilst making sure you have a great time. Thank you Stu!

      A good day out
This was a very well organised and professionally run day with the safety and well-being of the client being key. The pace set was appropriate to the terrain and the whole group had a magnificent day out. The packed lunch was good too!

      Amazing day hiking Tongariro Crossing
Highly recommend this tour! My husband and I booked this tour several months ago for our trip to NZ. We chose the Taupo pick-up + lunch options. The company has you call them 1 day before to discuss weather conditions, pick-up time, and preparation. The company really stresses safety. Upon pick-up the next day at our Taupo hotel, our guide, Stu, ensured we each had 1.5 to 2 liters of water and adequate layers of clothing, and confirmed if any of us had any health conditions that may impact our ability to complete the hike. The lunch that we were provided included a large burrito, apple, cheese/cracker snacks, chips, and waffle snack. Many snacks to ensure enough energy for the long hike. In total we had 17 hikers with 2 guides for the full day - each in the front and back. In addition there was a third guide with a private half-day tour. Unfortunately, two of the hikers were already having difficulty in the first phase of the hike and went back with the half-day, private tour folks. Again, safety was stressed. Our guide, Stu set a steady pace to ensure energy reserves not drained going up the mountain/Red crater. This was really helpful and made the trek up Red crater feel less overwhelming and doable. Doing down Red Crater was sketchy with loose rock, but our guides gave us good helpful tips on managing our way down. Hiking poles will be very helpful here. There were plenty of pit toilet stops along the way — just bring your own toilet paper. Once up and down Red crater to Emerald Lakes/Blue Lake, it’s a steady 6-7 mile downhill hike back to the car park. Overall ~12 miles total. Overall, highly recommend this company. Had a great time with this hike!

One can simply walk into (and out of) Mordor.
A trek not to be missed - especially for LOTR fans. Our guides provided great insights into the area, set a reasonable pace, and encouraged everyone to push themselves, but not at the expense of enjoying the experience. We would do it again in a heartbeat, once our legs have recovered - a lot of ups and downs on this trail.

Epic day - thank you so much <3
Can't thank this team enough! Pre-trip Robyn quelled any concerns i had about the safety set up. On the day our guides Ant and Gregor were spot on. Really friendly but in command of the group. I struggled as anticipated. Ant and Gregor had a descreet chat and the group was offerred an alternative route for anyone interested in a slightly less challenging experience. Honestly i loved it! Achieved way more than i had anticipsted and had the most enjoyable day on the mountain chatting with Ant and my partner. The fog even partially cleared and we had some fantastic views of the valley

      Unprofessional
We felt that the company were unprofessional. We had expected to do a full day's crossing but when we arrived there was one guide to two couples and the other couple were only booked on a half day. The excuse was that the weather was set to turn at lunch time. We are experienced mountain walkers and on reaching the south crater the weather was holding and we felt we could have gone on but had to turn back for the other couple. As partial recompense we were invited to a sunset hike from the chateau. Bearing in mind there was an expected change in the weather there was no assessment of preparedness of the group. We set off in warm sunshine but by the time we arrived at the waterfall a heavy hailstorm ensued and the other members of the group had no coats or warm clothing.

      Highly recommended guided tour
A well organised and led guided tour. The hosts have a vast supply of equipment and very thorough about ensuring you have the correct gear. Safety and comfort are obviously a priority. The guide was very knowledgeable and provided a great experience. I’d recommend their tours to anyone interested in this classic trek.

      Excellent Guided Walk
Thanks to Steve and Chris for their care in getting us up, down and back home for tea. Met at their office at 8.00 am. Good safety briefing, Equipment to rent if needed - we had everything but snow spikes for the snow at the top. We loaded into the van for the departure point. They took the group up slow and steady, which was very helpful (we were 30 years older than the rest of the group) - a good international mix of fellow travellers. We were very lucky with the weather with views from the top (after a 2 and three quarter hours) for miles and miles and miles. The different lakes and features well worth the effort. The down stretch is not short but plenty to view on the way. All back in the van and back to the office. Very professional.

      Amazing tour with stunning scenery
Cannot recommend this enough. The scenery is mind blowing and while a challenge, the hike itself is so rewarding when you get up to the top and look out across the mountains. Our guide Stu was excellent, in between the dad jokes of varying quality he made us feel incredibly safe particularly on the more challenging bits. Kept us at a great pace and kept the spirits up. It has honestly been the highlight of our trip so far!

      Amazing Experience!!!
I want to firstly thank both Stew and Robyn for their support throughout this whole 8.5 plus hours experience! One of many positives about booking with Adrift Tongariro is the priority placed on safety. This was covered very well at the debrief, initial prep session and along the trek with Stew across the Tongariro Crossing. They come highly recommended, and if you're able to, do the full day tour, it's totally worth it to really take in the views and beautiful landscapes! Overall, this was money well spent.

Fantastic Tongariro Crossing experience with Hiro from Adrift. Lunch provided with knowledgeable commentary along the way and an emphasis on our safety. Next day Hiro took us on three short walks locally which were a real treat. Thank you to the Adrift Team for everything you did for us.

With very inclement weather we were in safe hands with Stew as our guide. It was a challenging walk but we loved it and enjoyed lots of banter. We weren't able to get to the top due to rain, wind and the final insult - hail! But it was a great adventure and we will be back. Thank you Robyn for the yummy wraps!

Don't choose Adrift unless you are travelling with a car.
My friend and I travelled with Intercity and we were staying at Taupo, where we were supposed to be picked up. We were not sure about booking the tour because they pick you up in Taupo only if there are at least four people in the group, but Adrift assured us they always get even more than four people from Taupo.
The day before the tour, they told us they didn't reach that number and we had to go on our own, but we couldn't get to the National Park Village by public transport. We couldn't reschedule, so we asked if we could pay extra money for them to come and pick us up anyway, but they said it was too late for that.
We asked for a refund, since that is an option mentioned on the terms and conditions: "In the event we don't reach our minimums then we offer you the ability to either meet us at our base in Tongariro where we are likely to have reached our minimums or postpone or cancel with refund". They said they could only refund half the amount. We agreed to that, but they didn't send us the refund and eventually they stopped replying to our emails.
This is all really unprofessional. The worst part is that we didn't get to see the Tongariro, which was one of the places we were looking forward to check out in the North Island. I do not recommend booking a tour with Adrift.

We are so pleased that we booked 2 guides for our group of 12 - Laura and Gerard. They collected us from our hotel in the morning and took us to their depot, to sign in and check our gear. Had I not been with them, I wouldn't have taken my rain/wind jacket which provided a lot of protection from the wind at higher altitude. Everything about this company and our guides was great. They well were worth the extra expense, taking away the responsibility of making difficult decisions. Their helpful advice all along the way was highly valuable, especially when we experienced winds up to 100kph. Not once did I feel uncomfortable or anxious and when we got to a point that some of our crew were struggling with, they made the call as to whether they could cope - and 4 turned back with Gerard. For a diverse group like ours, plus 40 age group, I highly recommend. In fact, I would not do it without them.

My wife and I joined the Tongariro Alpine Crossing Guided Walk on 17 June 2022 with a guide named Hiro. To be fair, it was good for the most part but the actions taken by the guide could be improved. Whether or not the company takes this feedback onboard is obviously up to them but I will try to give my feedback as objectively and gentlemanly as I can.

Hiro turned my wife and I back about 5km into the track while he took the rest of the group the rest of the way up. Hiro's given reason for turning us back was because I "didn't look so good" and that I was displaying "heavy breathing".

Firstly, I'm not saying the guide can't turn me back; I just have an issue with how he did it. I appreciate that the guide was looking out for my safety and health, but I feel that this could have been handled in a better way. I am aware that it is the guide's prerogative on who gets to continue on the trek, but the way that he came to the decision and the manner in which he explained it to us, the customers, could definitely be improved.

I believe that Hiro did not conduct an adequate health assessment before turning me back. Heavy breathing is typical for any vigorous activity and the mere look on a person's face is insufficient by itself as a health assessment. As it is, I am normally pale-faced but that's just how I look. Hiro did not ask me typical health assessment questions such as if I was feeling any pain, if I was feeling light-headed, if I was dizzy, if I was cold, if I was feeling feverish, if I had anything to eat or drink earlier in the day, if I was short of breath, if I was feeling any palpitations, if we had done hiking before, what our fitness level was, if I felt I was at my limit, etc.

Hiro also did not physically examine me for any fever, irregular pulse, low body temperature, etc. What he did was to take a quick look at me and immediately decided that I was unfit to continue.

My suggestion is for the guide to ask more questions in the future, not only to get a better picture of what is happening to the customer but also to show the customer that he is being professional and caring.

Prior to turning me back, Hiro did ask me a few times along the trek if I was fine, to which I all replied in the affirmative. Full disclosure: I also revealed to Hiro during a conversation along the trek that I had a bout of motion sickness the day before while kayaking. However, I was not holding the group back in any way and kept up with the group's pace at all times. I did not once ask Hiro to stop or slow down, nor did I indicate at any time that I was unable to continue.

When I questioned Hiro regarding the above points after the guided walk, he deferred us to the company director, Stewart, for any complaints.

Unfortunately, I sent Stewart and his company an email a few weeks ago on 17 June and have yet to receive a reply.

Secondly, I believe our safety could have been better prioritised during the return journey.

My wife and I were unaccompanied along the return journey down the mountain for at least 3 hours which I believe is a rather serious safety issue. This means we were without a guide for more than half of our time outdoors.

Given my alleged poor physical condition as determined by Hiro, it would have been safer if he accompanied my wife and I back down the track to ensure we returned safely.

Hiro did ask me to text him once I got back down to a certain hut near the start. He did call me twice after we had arrived back at the van but I did not bring my phone with me on the hike. My bad I admit. But I believe a phone call would probably not be as helpful as being physically there to help me.

Unfortunately, even with Hiro's texts and calls, I could have fainted or injured myself on the way back and he would have been too far to render effective assistance. My wife would not have been able to physically handle me due to her small stature and her unfamiliarity with the terrain.

As an aside, Hiro did inform us back at their office after the guided walk that he actually requested for 2 guides to be attached to our group of 8 due to the rainy weather but their other staff insisted that Hiro take our group all by himself, which he reluctantly did. It is regrettable that Hiro had to struggle to lead our group on his own without sufficient support.

If we had two guides, we could have finished the guided walk as the other guide could have led my wife and I up. Alternatively, the second guide could have accompanied my wife and I back down to ensure we got back safely.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that customers pay a lot of money for these tours and it is thoroughly disappointing when the service is not perceived to be as good as it could be. Because all things considered, Hiro was cheerful, friendly, and helpful for most of the trip and we do appreciate his service. So if he could improve on a few simple things to make his service even better, I don't see any harm in that.

So I do hope both he and the company could take my sincere feedback onboard. Thank you.

My family of four with two teenage boys did the Tongariro Alpine Crossing with Stuart. There was a mix up with the travel agent that booked us, but Stuart smoothed everything out and made everyone happy. It was a real treat spending the day with him, as he was super knowledgable and helpful. My wife had a knee that was acting up, and Stuart carried her pack in addition to his big pack on the steep part of the climb. It was a tough all day hike, but definitely worth it.

It was touch & go if we were going to make it round the whole hike due to strong winds, hail & bleaching rain but the five of us in our group were keen to make the challenge. One guide had been turning people back as he had deemed it unsafe to cross at the top owing to the winds however, our guide Claire after checking wind conditions was happy to press on, assessing the weather as we went. We manged the whole trek - the clouds even cleared at the top for a short time so we were able to view the volcano & the lakes despite the gales blowing (a little bit scary for those of us of slight build) & to eat our lunch with freezing fingers in the rain beside one of the lakes. It was an exhilarating experience & we made it in good time albeit wet to the skin as our waterproofs had not held against the bleaching rain & we were freezing cold. We are both active in mid fifties & my husband has had bilateral knee replacements & found the route not that difficult - the most challenging part was working against the extremely inclement weather.

We ran into the unfortunate situation of a full day of rain (early spring) on the day of our walk. While we ended up not making it all the way through from the cold/wet/wind combination, this hike was still our favorite throughout our stay in NZ! Our 2 guides were friendly & knowledgable, and I was really impressed that they were part of search & rescue for the area, so I felt like we were in good hands. My fiancé is a baby when it comes to long walks, but even he said the walking was never too intense or strenuous (we maybe went 14km total since we turned around). Adrift had all the gear we needed & we were greeted with hot chocolate at the end of the day, which certainly helped warm us up!
