Do not book with Experience Oz for this tour, you will lose your money. My wife and I booked this tour for our honeymoon. Experience Oz never contacted us to let us know the tour was canceled. We disputed the charge with our credit card and the company lied and said that they rebooked our tour, they didn't. I wish I would have listened to the other reviews. Details below.

We had a sunrise tour booked, I called the morning before we were scheduled to leave and they let us know that the crossing was closed, this was in early January 2020, due to someone passing away on the crossing. The closure happened 2 days before, they didn't contact us in those 2 days.

When I was on the phone with them, I let them know that we were canceling the tour. The representative said nothing about not getting our money back. I called back a few hours later to confirm we would not be charged, at that time they let me know that we would still be charged and tried to re-schedule for another date and time. All the dates and times they offered did not work with our schedule. I let them know that, and they said that we had to pick one of "their" available dates and times. We did not, we trusted our credit card dispute would win out as we were in the right.

Fast forward a few months later, today I finished talking with the credit card company. We disputed the charge and we lost. Experience Oz lied to their bank and said that they rebooked us. They might have rebooked us, but they never confirmed with us the new date and we never approved the rebooking. That is wrong.

Sure if you want to go on this tour, do it, but make sure you have 1-2 days on either side of the tour sitting around doing nothing or you might lose your money.

The worst part, this was what I was the adventure that I was looking forward to most and now it's the stain on the trip.

We had booked a Sunrise Crossing with Adrift for a Tuesday morning in January and it was the thing we looked forward to the most in our 3 weeks trip through NZ.

We had checked the weather a few days in advance. Unfortunately, it was going to rain that day/night with lots of thunderstorms. When I called their office 2 days before our tour, the guy on the phone told me the tour was cancelled on Tuesday morning because of the weather and that we were going to be differed to a daytime tour.

We were not previously made aware of the fact that the tour might change and the schedule differ by 7 hours which basically meant a whole day. As I had previously told them we were only supposed to get to the Tongariro region on the day of the tour and had a long way to drive up on Tuesday (the following day) so a Daytime tour was unfortunately impossible for us to do even though we'd really have loved to do it.

When I explained this to the guy on the phone, he was hesitant at first but then simply told me they were going "to put up a sunrise" tour for us which basically meant go up at 2 AM in a cloudy and rainy weather, walking in the dark to not actually see the sun rise or see any of the surroundings. Now that doesn’t make a lot of sense, does it?

The person on the phone then told me to ring back at 8 AM on Monday morning (the following day) to see if the weather forecast had changed. We tried to ring their office multiple times that morning as we were told to do and noone answered (neither on the phone, nor to my previous 2 emails for that fact). As the weather forecast hadn't changed the least bit and noone answered the phone, we assumed the tour was still cancelled. We wrote them another email and even left our mobile phone number so they could reach us (being tourists we didn’t have an internet connection everywhere).
We hadn't heard from them by noon so we drove up the coast. When we got to our hostel we got an email from them, sent out at around 3 PM, telling us the sunrise tour was going to be put up anyways.
By that point it was virtually impossible for us to even get there on time. Besides that, the weather forecast was still rain and thunderstorms so a sunrise tour still did not make any sense at all and was even risky.

I find the approach they had inadmissible and just profoundly unprofessionnal. We didn't get an answer to half of our emails. Then someone from their office clearly tells us the tour is cancelled due to the weather which is totally understandable. When informed that we could not go on a daytime tour due to our holiday schedule (not everyone can stay as long as they want to), a sunrise tour was all of a sudden going to be 'put up' for us despite the same weather.

First of all, if they sometimes differ people onto tours that are on an entirely different schedule they might want to inform them of that possibility before they book. Unfortunately, we only had 3 weeks in NZ and had to plan everything through in detail so it simply was not possible for us to stay longer. Even though we would have loved to do the crossing.

Second, i don't see how doing a sunrise tour without the sun would make sense. It was not only rainy with thunderstorms coming up and the sun wouldn't show but during the night you wouldn't even see the surroundings which you would at least see during the day even in case of rain. The people from Adrif clearly felt the same as we were told our tour was cancelled.

I find the approach quite the opposite of customer oriented I must say. We had booked a scenic helicopter flight in Franz Josef for about the same price the crossing costs. We weren't charged in advance. Due to the weather conditions we couldn't do the flight. The guy said it wasn't possible that day, apologized, but it cost us nothing. He did not tell us it was cancelled, then wrote an email to tell us it was ok again after we'd driven off, or expect us to sit around until the weather was ok again to take us up. The people from Adrift might want to follow his example.

In the end, they never even bothered to reply to a single one of our emails and kept our 590 dollars all to themselves for a tour we never went on due to the weather conditions. Way to go when it comes to customer service !

My partner and I had an amazing time doing the sunrise Tongarino crossing guided by Laura. We met at 1am and Laura gave us exactly what we needed to be warm and safe on the crossing - thermal top, gloves, small torch, beanie, extra coat, and I decided to take the crampons. Then we were off! We drove 30 mins to the track and started walking in the dark.

Overall, the crossing was absolutely beautiful. We didn't see another hiker until over the half way point - given the large number of hikers toward the end of the crossing, this was a real bonus just to be on the peaks all by ourselves.

Laura is just awesome. Very knowledgeable and friendly, down to earth, good sense of humour, and kept me going when I got cold and silent after lunch with some friendly chatting.

Would wholeheartedly recommend doing the crossing with Adrift! Thank you Laura and Adrift for the best adventure of our holiday to NZ.
