We did everything at port, it'll cost you $3 to take a shuttle to nearby Mahahual or simply walk out of the Costa Maya complex and you'll immediately run into a taxi depot where you can sort out the transportation you need and pricing to pretty much anywhere. My wife and I took a taxi cab (to make the most of our time, not wait for others, etc) from Mahahual to Chacchoben, then headed to Cenote Azul, stopped to get some gifts, and headed back to Costa Maya and the whole trip didn't set us back $140 total. Highly recommended.

The path even though flat is uneven with tree roots growing through. There are occasional seats, if she is unsteady 2 walking sticks is advisable. Make sure you have hats, midge spray, sunscreen and plenty of water. It is a very quiet and relaxing place...lovely if she can make, next to the car park is a little market for a mini mooch round.
