As an architect, I admire the works of Tadao Ando, as well as other contemporary Japanese architects. I'm also an admirer of fine arts of many diverse eras. These are the reasons we recently visited Naoshima, including the following museums: Chichu, Benesse, Ando, Lee Ufan,...More

I’m not really a big fan of most modern art. I’m not a huge fan of Monet and his Water Lillies series. I don’t particularly find concrete interesting. All of these are features of this museum. However, the combination and presentation came together to really...More

They may have seemed to have limited the number of visitors, but it was still jam-packed. Long queues in confined corridors to see the major artworks, majority of which are baffling (other than Monet’s later water lilies)! Really for those who love modern architecture and...More

The architecture of Tadao Ando, the extraordinary art installations and the setting combine to make this small museum an outstanding experience. By limiting the number of visitors entering at any one time the serenity of the museum is preserved and the art can be enjoyed...More

Breathtaking It’s a must.. plan your trip to Japan according the availability of accommodation on naoshima (especially if you want the Benesse hotel) and then second book a ticket for this museum.

Long slanting light of late October made every angle sharp as ice. Memorable images from each turn in the corridor and every new framing. Yes this is museum as temple, and temple as museum. If you accept that, then you can believe just enough to...More

The reviews here cover the 2 most important aspects: 1) You must reserve a ticket in advance and 2) It’s mainly modern art, aside from some large format Monet water lily paintings. The poor reviews seem to focus on disappointment related to these two things....More

Very cool architecture, wonderful immersive experiences. Suggest not too read to much about this place before you go. Allow yourself to be surprised ! They have an online ticket reservation system. Book in advance or you might be disappointed. Mondays closed.

Buy tickets in advance and try and get the first slot, then you sample the magic in solitude. It is wonderful and enjoy the gardens outside too. Note the ticket exchange is down the road from the museum

Ando's architecture is wonderful. The water-lilies are not inspiring. Don't miss the Lee Ufan museum.

No, there is no total darkness. There are some spaces with limited daylight, but no total darkness. No fear!

I think you can access without entrance fee (the shop anyway). Cafe lovely, great panoramic window and view and food good. Shop small.
