The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Vatican / Borgo
Frocked priests, colorful Swiss Guards, insistent souvenir shop owners, flag-waving tour guides, and pilgrims from around the world. This is the Vatican and Borgo, Rome's most recognized neighbourhood which acts as Vatican City's front yard. Aside from the souvenir boutiques and a few food spots, the only business conducted here is papal. In the daytime, the tiny medieval sector bustles with holy activity, as visitors vie for elbow room, or stand in line for a visit. Once the sun sets, the neighbourhood is transformed into a quiet and picturesque hamlet.

- Lewis DAlton, United Kingdom14 contributionsStunning view point and cafeOnce you’re at the top there is a cafe with plenty of tables overlooking the city. A stunning spot to grab a light bite and a drink whilst appreciating the views. You can then go even further up to the top of the building with even better views of the city and Rome capital. Highly recommendVisited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 March 2023
- NorthlibertytravelerNorth Liberty, Iowa163 contributionsfascinating historyWell organized tours. Ticket prices fair, able to purchase online and no time limit. Beautiful views and photo ops from top. plenty of restrooms and even a cafe on upper levelsVisited March 2023Written 26 March 2023
- BeaSao Paulo, SP78 contributionsMagical sunsetIt's an interest museum to visit, but for me the magic about it is it's terrace during sunset. Book your ticket for one hour and a half before the sunset. You will have time to see the museum and at the end, enjoy a memorable and beautiful sunset with a magical view.Visited April 2022Written 29 March 2023
- PaintedShoes69 contributionsSolid Historical ExperienceThis is our second trip to Rome and we had the Castel on our “to do” list for a next time. We bought pre-booked tickets and strode in past the line, enjoying a good few hours looking at everything we could find and getting a great impression of this magnificent historical place. We particularly enjoyed an expresso at the bar here, overlooking the Vatican.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 April 2023
- StAnnes1983Lytham St Anne's, United Kingdom68 contributionsWorth a visit! We really enjoyed looking round. But the the views from the cafe are incredible! Definitely worth sitting down for a drink! There is plenty to see and the views from the top are incredible. Make sure you book tickets the day before to avoid the long lines!Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 May 2023
- Family5GetAwaySt. John's, Canada295 contributionsDefinitely worth a visitWe really enjoyed our visit to Castel Sant’Angelo. The history of the site was very interesting and there was a lot to see between the old fortress structure, the beautifully decorated rooms and the amazing views of the city. We did not buy our tickets in advance as we were there for the 9 am opening, but other times that we were in the area we did see longer lines of people waiting to get it. Overall, we did not find it crowded as compared to many other sites in Rome and took our time wandering around. There are bathrooms on site, a café at the top and a small gift shop. If you have the time when in Rome, I would recommend visiting the Castel.Visited May 2023Written 11 May 2023
- Kenneth EErwin, Tennessee519 contributionsAmazing viewsThis is definitely a must-see. The first time we were in rome, we skipped it. I'm so glad we went this time. The views are amazing below the arch angel Michael. Some sculptures to see and paintings, but the view...amazing.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 May 2023
- HeaveNEarthFairfax, Virginia229 contributionsBest Caffe to visit in Rome - No Decoration NeededIt is very relaxing place to be in. The castle has a lot to offer. Sip a drink or two at the caffe, which has an incredible view thru castle. We actually didn't want to move after such relaxed rest at the caffe. A bit confusing how to order and pay for your drinks, but grab a table and wait for servers...Visited March 2023Written 20 May 2023
- Heather WWrexham, United Kingdom17 contributionsWorth visiting but don’t book via headoutEnjoyed the visit but if booking via headout bear in mind you’re paying a much higher price. Audio guide is just access to an app on your mobile. The ‘host’ wasn’t interested when I expressed disappointment that I’d paid 50 euros for tickets that should’ve cost 14 euros.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 23 May 2023
- Kevin15 contributionsTop of the listOf all the amazing places you can visit in Rome, this is the best. It has a remarkable history and links to the Vatican’s survival in the 1500s as well as cultural links to modern day Rome. The view from the top is excellent and gives you a good bearing on where everything is. Our two hour guided tour was excellent. Sunset is a good, but very popular time to go. It’s one of the best things I’ve done in many years.Visited May 2023Written 5 June 2023

What a great little castle. You get wonderful views of the area. It has a very unique history. It was never intended to be a castle at the start. Most people find this place. Interesting. I think it was worth the price of admission.

Astonishingly beautiful citadel in central Rome. Reeking of integrity it squats next to the Tiber river like Simon Sharma, an historical toad.

Definitely a must do in Rome!
Suggestion: you can go on the same day you’ll visit the Vatican City, because it’s very close. The Castel has a lot to visit and is full of history. Some of the rooms ar preserved as the originals, and there are tools, guns, swords and other objects to see. Besides, the view on the rooftop is very nice, specially if you have the chance to go right before the sunset.

The towering rotunda is the tomb of the Roman emperor Hadrian and today houses a museum. It is truly an impressive building and an iconic landamrk of Rome. Navigate the internal passageways and view the museum pieces along the way until you arrive at the top of the castle. There you will be able to enjoy stunning and breathtaking scenic views of Rome and the Vatican underneath the towering statue of Archangel Michael. Impressive!

Very informative, fascinating place! €13 an adult under 18's free. Over 4 floors, Toilets on the ground floor only, cafe on the 1st serves sandwiches, cakes and drinks, roughly €3.50 for Fizzy, €5 for a latte. Not far at all from the vatican [you can see from angels terrace] it's a must, for the price too! Highly recommend.

Looks like this castle had multiple lives. From army post, dungeons to papal's residence during the middle ages. Very interesting building full of history.

What is the official website to buy tickets ? So far I find tickets through tour operators not directly with the museum di Castelo Sant’Angelo. We plan to go in July so we are avoiding to queue with the hot weather. Thanks

We want to go straight to the terrace of Castel sant Angelo . Once inside is it difficult to get to the terrace? Are there allot of steps? I read there’s an elevator how can you request to use the elevator to get to the top? I ask because my mother has some issues with her knees and going up allot of steps may be challenging for her

Considerate le recenti restrizioni per via del Covid, il museo è aperto o chiuso? (Il Lazio è zona gialla...) Grazie

Hi,
I am planning to purchase 48 hours Romapass and do my first entry to Colosseum. In the Romapass website, it indicates that 'direct access to Saint Angel's Castle National Museum'. Does it mean that i go with Romapass direct to security check in at Saint Angel's Castle and then buy discounted ticket with Romapass?
Thanks in advance.

With a romapass 48 hr ticket, you can visit the colosseum, and one other site of interest. You can use the metro or bus for free, for that is what the roma pass offers, cross town and visit the st angel castle, and it will be half price or free if you haven't usef you pass else where. Info on the romapass info site.
