Originally built in the mid-13th century, Santa Maria Glorisoa dei Frari (St. Mary of the Friars) houses many masterpieces of Venetian Renaissance art, notably Giovanni Bellini's triptych "Madonna and Child with Saints," the "Assumption" and the "Pesaro Madonna" by Titian, Saint John the Baptist by Donatello.

Neighbourhood: San Polo
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighbourhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.

    Worth checking
If and when you have seen a lot of great decorated churches (including the one in Vatican), is there a need to see more? Not if you ask me 😊. But when you travel, it’s good to see some. This is what we decided to see and it was much more than you think from the outside.

    Tiziano amazing work
This is a beautiful basilica and the art it contains is gorgeous and of huge historical significance. The Titian (Tiziano Vecelli) “The Assumption” is breathtaking. Recommend getting the audio guide for additional information about the basilica and the art.

Worth seeing - the Frari Church
This basilica is worth seeing. Titian is the featured artist here and a few of his masterpieces adorn the main altar (Assumption) and one Madonna painting on the side. He was also entombed here. Donatello and Bellini are also featured. The basilica is very open and welcoming - quite different from San Marco’s.

    Art is amazing
Highly recommend visiting the Frari Basilica. Bellini's artwork beautiful and the colors are vivid. The outside is very unassuming; the inside is peaceful with great architecture and art. It is also located in a peaceful, less touristy section of Venice which makes for a great opportunity to explore more of the great city.

Local Basilica with A LOT of history
Very quiet, away from all the tourists. This church was loaded with paintings from the 12th century on and very historical. You really felt like you stepped back in time and were just part of the local community going to mass.

Alter artwork you will not want to miss
The masterpiece at the alter is something you cannot miss. I could not take my eyes off the painting. The church is full of artwork and the smaller chapels are spiritually moving. Please don't miss spending some time in this Basilica.

    amazing
One of my favorite churches in Venice, a spectacular example of Venetian gothic style. It of course has the 2 Tizians, but also a Donatello and a Bellini (which is in the sacristy and not available when I visited). Incredible statuary (includes 4 enormous blacks shouldering a marble freeze, an enormous and amazing gothic screen, and evidence of early (6th century) Christian frescoes; monumental funeral statuary of early doges (Foscari etc). Truly amazing.

    A lasting joy!
No matter how often one visits Venice there are favourite friends you just have to see and in my book the Frari is one of those! One can enthuse about Titian and Bellini but really to my mind it is the wonderful ensemble, it’s enormous scale, the bricks, the numerous beautiful memorials, that of Canova especially elegant and beautiful in my mind, the sun of all its parts rather than any individual pieces. I do hope I get to come back a further time, it is delightful inside and out!

This is one of the most beautiful basilicas in Venice. There is a lot to see here and it’s well explained by the pamphlet offered on entrance

The Basilica has well preserved some of the great architecture, paintings and artecrafts. It gives good learning about the Italian history.

While it is nowhere as big or famous as St. Mark’s Basilica, this church has many beautiful pieces of artwork and is well worth a visit. The church and its surrounding area were nowhere as crowded as St. Mark’s Square giving it a much different vibe compared to the more popular parts of Venice.

We purchased tickets on-site where there was no wait. An audio guide can be purchased separately that was quite helpful. Photos without flash were allowed. We did not notice any toilets inside though.

There are plenty of other churches to see that are free. Even the free churches, i always give a small donation too when visiting. This church charges €5 for adults and €2 for kids or students. So my family of 4 was €14. I know that doesn't sound like much, but with everything else doing, it adds up.
