Neighbourhood: San Polo
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighbourhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.

- Sanski66Espoo, Finland371 contributionsWorth checkingIf and when you have seen a lot of great decorated churches (including the one in Vatican), is there a need to see more? Not if you ask me 😊. But when you travel, it’s good to see some. This is what we decided to see and it was much more than you think from the outside.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 April 2023
- Rae Rae C295 contributionsTiziano amazing workThis is a beautiful basilica and the art it contains is gorgeous and of huge historical significance. The Titian (Tiziano Vecelli) “The Assumption” is breathtaking. Recommend getting the audio guide for additional information about the basilica and the art.Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 23 April 2023
- Santosh NAtlanta, Georgia34 contributionsWorth seeing - the Frari ChurchThis basilica is worth seeing. Titian is the featured artist here and a few of his masterpieces adorn the main altar (Assumption) and one Madonna painting on the side. He was also entombed here. Donatello and Bellini are also featured. The basilica is very open and welcoming - quite different from San Marco’s.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 May 2023

The outside is very unassuming; the inside is peaceful with great architecture and art. It is also located in a peaceful, less touristy section of Venice which makes for a great opportunity to explore more of the great city.Visited April 2023Written 16 May 2023

- Kai CHalf Moon Bay, California1,269 contributionsamazingOne of my favorite churches in Venice, a spectacular example of Venetian gothic style. It of course has the 2 Tizians, but also a Donatello and a Bellini (which is in the sacristy and not available when I visited). Incredible statuary (includes 4 enormous blacks shouldering a marble freeze, an enormous and amazing gothic screen, and evidence of early (6th century) Christian frescoes; monumental funeral statuary of early doges (Foscari etc). Truly amazing.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 8 January 2024
- John PMelbourne, Australia1,192 contributionsA lasting joy!No matter how often one visits Venice there are favourite friends you just have to see and in my book the Frari is one of those! One can enthuse about Titian and Bellini but really to my mind it is the wonderful ensemble, it’s enormous scale, the bricks, the numerous beautiful memorials, that of Canova especially elegant and beautiful in my mind, the sun of all its parts rather than any individual pieces. I do hope I get to come back a further time, it is delightful inside and out!Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 January 2024

This is one of the most beautiful basilicas in Venice. There is a lot to see here and it’s well explained by the pamphlet offered on entrance

The Basilica has well preserved some of the great architecture, paintings and artecrafts. It gives good learning about the Italian history.

While it is nowhere as big or famous as St. Mark’s Basilica, this church has many beautiful pieces of artwork and is well worth a visit. The church and its surrounding area were nowhere as crowded as St. Mark’s Square giving it a much different vibe compared to the more popular parts of Venice.
We purchased tickets on-site where there was no wait. An audio guide can be purchased separately that was quite helpful. Photos without flash were allowed. We did not notice any toilets inside though.

There are plenty of other churches to see that are free. Even the free churches, i always give a small donation too when visiting. This church charges €5 for adults and €2 for kids or students. So my family of 4 was €14. I know that doesn't sound like much, but with everything else doing, it adds up.

Certainly didn't need a pass nor can I remember having to pay. If I did it's only a small amount. I have never seen a queue for entrance. However, it's not easy to find when you have left the vaporetto the streets are very narrow and you cannot see the Basilica above them.

Hi, thanks so much for posting about this concert. How early do you suggest arriving?
AngieAvers
Plainfield, IL306 contributions
You don't need to arrive very early. We arrived maybe half an hour early and we were also able to choose seats that pleased us, maybe 2nd or 3rd row, which was perfect.
The thing is, the streets are tiny and it can be confusing to find where you need to be. I recommend finding it sometime earlier on the day or earlier in your trip so you will recognize it.

SunyCloudyRainy's memory HAS faded. It is €3 for everyone though with the Chorus card (€12) you get one free entry to 18 churches which is really good value. It's available at the entrance of the participating churches like the Frari. The Chorus card site also has information about opening times, temporary closures, feast days and musical concerts- some of which are free. Google their website.
