Top ways to experience Albert Cuyp Market
The area
Neighbourhood: De Pijp
Bustling Albert Cuypstraat serves as the main drag through De Pijp and the location for Albert Cuyp Market, the largest and most famous of Amsterdam’s many outdoor markets. Beyond this sometimes-frantic thoroughfare, tiny lanes beckon urban explorers in search of the latest trends and hidden gems. Nearly half the residents living in De Pijp are foreigners and a good number of them are students. Here you'll find a multitude of ethnic restaurants, great cafes and bars, and a brilliant array of locally owned shops, all catering to a broad range of budgets and tastes.

- leandra0414Anderson, Missouri21 contributionsA Fun ExperienceWorth the visit. We enjoyed seeing all the food stalls, but the clothes, etc. were your typical touristy, kitschy fare. We went on a Saturday and a Thursday. Saturday was far busier, but there was more available to see. We had taken cash out of an ATM before arriving at the market assuming we needed it; however, most stalls are cashless.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 March 2023
- Cme1234Singapore, Singapore469 contributionsVery nice walk. Go there on an empty stomachThere are lots of food stalls at reasonable prices. It is a long street with stalls along both sides selling food, fruits, clothes, housewares, etc. nice to visit for an hour. Please note that it closes at 5 pm daily and it is not open on Sunday.Visited April 2023Travelled soloWritten 21 April 2023
- kathleenl183Texas226 contributionsSomething for everyoneI came to the market on a Friday afternoon after visiting the Van Gogh museum. It’s only a 10-15 minute walk from there so great to group these together in the same day. There are about 3 blocks of stalls to walk down and there’s something for everyone - different kinds of Dutch foods, Mexican tacos, Asian foods and various vendors selling anything you could possibly want from seafood to flowers to souvenirs. I tried bitterballen, fries with Mayo, poffertjes. I got 2 pairs of earrings and a windmill figurine as a gift for a family member. The prices were reasonable and I walked away a happy (and full) camper!Visited April 2023Travelled soloWritten 24 April 2023
- Maureen HJay, New York38 contributionsWorth a visitWorthwhile street market. Lots of vendors of all sorts: crafts and food and household items and souvenirs. Good values to be had. Note that it says it opens at 9:00 but many vendors are not set up until significantly later. Bring your appetite!Visited April 2023Written 3 May 2023
- Gillian JGerrards Cross, United Kingdom148 contributionsEverything you need from a market, with plenty to eat and drink in surrounding streets. This market is huge extending for several blocks. You could pretty much set your whole house up, cloth the whole family and eat a different meal each day for weeks. Local fruit, veg, flowers, tourist tat and food delicacies. Music, drink and much more.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 May 2023
- LeonhknyHong Kong, China14,495 contributionsInteresting marketAlbert Cuypmarkt is a huge market for both locals and tourists. The long row of shops and stalls offers everything from food, fresh produces to handicrafts. Despite of the almost omnipresent tourists, goods are still cheaper than those in the city center. Make sure you arrive here hungry; a plethora of eateries will fill you up.Visited June 2023Written 5 June 2023
- RikardoMurska Sobota, Slovenia6 contributionsGood prices, nice location, a ton of options to choose fromNice location near the centre, we were there two times in one week. The shops are nice with a lot of flowers and souveniers to choose from, but most of the shops offer the same stuff at a bit different prices. I have to add that if you need any souveniers, flowers or just smoking accessories, they have it all. You can also stop there for the dutch pancakes or cheese if you like. Just mind that it can get very busy.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 June 2023
- Tom JLondon, United Kingdom1,622 contributionsGood outside market with a few food options and market stallsWe came here for a walk around, it was a raining day and unfortunately there isn’t really anywhere you can get undercover. The market stalls all have covers but they are limited and when it’s pouring down with rain you do get wet. We came on a Monday and didn’t find there was tonnes of options most of the stalls sold similar stuff. We went to a stroop wafels stall and had both an original and a dipped chocolate one if you are there you have to try both as they are so good and made fresh in front of you cost about €3 - €4 each. We also tried bennys chicken which was good they have a few different options on offer and the value for money is good. Worth a visit if your in the area.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 August 2023
- NICHOLAS TDubai, United Arab Emirates5,917 contributionsEnjoyable experienceThis market offered a really good range of cheap, excellent street food and lots of items to buy, including souvenirs. There are also a number of permanent food and beverage outlets with outdoor seating amongst it all. A vibrant atmosphere. Well worth a visit and not far from some of the big tourist sights.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 September 2023

Market is delightful, many different vendors, art and food. If you are a firs time visitor to AMS for sure visit this local market. It's a nice break and all the vendors are charming and helpful. The young man selling the chocolate brownies, they are THE BEST EVER.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 27 September 2023

A plethora of stalls serving food, souvenirs, clothes, bags and nicknacks. We only purchased edibles starting with a workman favourite - the mackerel roll. Wandered along a bit and stopped for a homemade stroopwaffle. Since the weather was a bit cold & wet we then finished with a cone of frites (& mayo) to warm us up.

Good market off the usual tourist routes with a selection of everything whether you're a local looking for fresh food or a stray tourist looking for an original souvenir. If you want an honest bite to eat in a proper Dutch cafe then try 'Cafe Koffiehuis "De Cuyp." (See picture)' It's definitely a locals place but the owner was really friendly and welcomes everyone. The food isn't flash nor expensive but, trust me, it's good. The apple pancake especially.

The market was great on Saturday. A range of products and food, at reasonable prices. On Thursday, however, there were many stall holders not there - disappointing.

Heard about this market from virtually every guide to Amsterdam I looked at. Strangely smaller than expected.
We visited after a morning at a nearby museum and thought we’d try out the street food for lunch.
Not every stall or space was occupied, but we found enough to keep us happy. The grilled cheese sandwich place was really good as were the fries from the chap at the very end of the market. We couldn’t miss Rudi’s Stroop wafels and bought lots as gifts too. For us, the best and cheapest you’ll find.
For the rest of the market, there are a few cheap souvenir shops which were good for bits and pieces and definitely the best prices for clog slippers (the airports prices were almost double).
The cheese stalls were very well priced too and seemed more genuine to the more glossy branded cheese shops on the Damrak and in central Amsterdam.
There are of course other stalls selling various other goods ranging from from toiletries to cheap clothes and household items.
Overall a very nice experience which served its purpose. Definitely recommend.

Must visit for seafood lovers, and others looking for a morning stroll off the beaten tourist path. Lots of fisheries, bakeries, cafes. Next to The Pijp.

We visited on a cold wet Tuesday in January - so probably not representative of how the place really is. However, the market was fully operational and impressive with the variety of items for sale. The locals obviously purchase food and edibles there, and then there are stalls aimed at tourists. The food options were very varied, ranging from fruit and veg to fresh fish, artisan cheeses and even a stall specialising in game birds and meat. There were lots of hot food options also, obviously including the Dutch fries, which you just have to try!
Along the outside of the market are some wonderful individual shops which would have occupied us far more if the weather had been kinder. Would definitely return

We went on a Monday early afternoon, not many shops open. We did try the fried fish and prawns with garlic mayo, they were delicious and you need to try. We also had coffee and madeleines at the little patisserie which were Yummo!
Other than these food shops not a lot happening in the winter months.

A very long street full of stalls of all kinds: Dutch and international street food, clothing, souvenirs, and anything else you can imagine in a market. I had my hotel near there so it was easy to walk past, but I recommend it even if you are a bit further away.

I am planning to visit this market in the month of May 29th, will be buying the Dutch cheese, after that I will tour to Norway. Will it stay fresh without Refrigeration? I can always store it in the hotel room's mini fridge, but will be traveling by train/air from one city to another.

We brought home several varieties of waxed cheeses and had no issues. They were all packed into our suitcases inside plastic bags. We had no leakage and the cheese kept just fine without refrigeration for our trip back. You shouldn't have problems unless you're traveling to Phoenix in the summertime!!!

Good afternoon. The market is open from 9 to 5 from Monday to Saturday, but you don't want to get there by 4 because most vendors will be packing there things, as it happened to me. My tram was late and got there late. But there were still a lot to explore. I highly recommend going early like around 10 or 11. You can use these tram lines: you may take tram lines 4,16, 24 or 25 to get there. I hope this info helps you. Have a great time at the Market

Hi, we were there going into summer months and we arrived about 10 am and they were setting up. I don't know if the times alter for different seasons. We took a tram there from out the front of Amsterdam central. The food stalls were all there in the morning when we visited.
