- Keith MNewcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom46 contributionsA must visit !We finally got here after failing 3 years ago just prior to Covid. That time we had a hire car and I navigated the circular route past the castle ( Never again !!) and couldn't find a parking spot. This time we got an Uber direct from our hotel in Estoril to the Palace gates for only 13 euro. We had pre-booked times the day before and arrived in plenty of time so had a walk up to the High Cross beforehand. Queue's were being well monitored and we only waited 30 minutes to get in at 1.30 slot. The rooms inside the castle are well furnished and very interesting with good info on the history and use of the building. The views of the surrounding countryside are amazing. The gardens are more of a managed forest area but probably worth walking down through The Valley of the Lakes on leaving the castle which gets you back to the entrance. There was a bit of a wait for an Uber to take us back to Estoril as clearly not keen to come round that hairpin road but after 30 mins we got one for only 11 euro. I was later told a short downhill path easily takes you down to Sintra centre but we had visited there 3 years ago so didn' take that option.Visited March 2023Written 23 March 2023
- Geoff YPennsburg, Pennsylvania167 contributionsWorth the visit on a day trip to Sintra, the outside visit is better than the insideWe visited Pena Palace on a daytrip to Sintra while in Lisbon. First of all, make sure you get tickets ahead of time on their website. We arrived early for our timed entry and the line to buy tickets was very long. Also, you have to get timed tickets and you must arrive at your time, there apparently is no allowance for people who are late. We arrived at 9:40 for our 10:00 entrance and were the first in line waiting for the 10AM entry. The park and the outside of the palace are gorgeous. There are tons of paths and areas to walk around and the nature and birdwatching here is great. The outside of the palace is very picturesque and the view (when the fog is not there) are stunning. The inside of the palace was very underwhelming. You shuffle in line from room to room and there was nothing really mindblowing about it (not like other palaces we've visited). If I was to recommend it, I'd recommend only buying a park ticket to see the park and the outside of the palace, and skip the inside of the palace ticket.Visited March 2023Written 29 March 2023
- NoakesRyanBury, United Kingdom595 contributionsIt's a yes from me! 🏰Beautiful. Stunning. I'm so happy we saw it. We pre-booked an entry slot at 12:30. We did the Castle first and gave ourselves enough time. The park itself is big. There's plenty to walk around and see on the way up to the Palace. We arrived at the entrance and there were hundreds of people. We arrived at 11:45 and the Security Man said we were too early and that the two queues were for 11:30 and 12:00. At 12:00 he said the same but after 5mins we decided to walk up and I am glad we did as our time slot was listed on the board and we joined the line at the start. It was good to go in. I wasn't that bothered by the rooms but the building was beautiful, with tiles from floor to ceiling. On a very sunny day like we had the views and the building itself look beautiful. Worth a visit.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 March 2023
- Ewan PrimroseUnited Kingdom53 contributionsExcellent day out to Sintra exploring the Pena Palace parkStunning gardens and walks with terrific views of Pena palace and Lisbon in the distance. A brilliant day trip from Lisbon with easy access to reach from the city. Online tickets should be easier to buy however, the website was not very good so we had to pay when we arrived where there is long queues. *park visit only*Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 April 2023
- BradJillHong Kong, China159,778 contributionsSintra's whimsical palace and park groundsThe hills above Sintra are dotted with palaces and parks. The Most popular and perhaps the most beautiful and interesting being the National Palace and Park of Pena. Opening hours 9.30am to 7pm daily. Ticket prices are €7.50 (park only) and €14 (park and palace). Best to allow 2-3 hours to visit the palace and explore the park grounds at a leisurely pace. Note: Importantly, palace ticketing must be reserved in advance through online booking now. Visitors must choose a time slot which is strictly enforced due to the high number of daily visitors these days. There seems to be no tolerance for late arrivals either. If you have a 10am slot, be at the foot of the palace early and ready to enter at or as close to 10am as possible. By 10.30am your time slot is up and you will not be allowed into the palace. Note: In addition to strict management of entry into Pena Palace, they are really pushing visitors through quickly these days as well. There is little time to enjoy and take pictures and not enough time to read the information before attendants begin waving you to move along. This is quite annoying given the high entry price but understandable given the high number of visitors they are wanting to allow in during each 30 minute time slot. Note: Park opening times seem to be 9am and you can enter at that time to begin exploring the Pena Park grounds. There are 2-3 hours worth of walking paths that wind through 200 hectares of wooded grounds, gardens and short valley with a series of lakes. There are a few monuments, 19th-century structures and other points of interest and endless places to stop and enjoy a picnic within the beautiful park grounds. As such, pack a light lunch with you for your visit, something you can enjoy before/after your visit to the Palace. The Palace itself is colourful, quirky and incredibly whimsical. Clearly drawling influence form Ludwig's castles in Bavaria, Pena Palace was designed for the decorative and playfulness, not for defensive purposes. It is a delight to see and take pictures of from the outside and interesting to walk through, viewing the various rooms which have served as convent, royal residencies and even military purposes in the past. Note: There are designated tour buses that start at the Sintra Rail Station that make drop off at Pena Palace. You can also take taxi or uber to the park entrance from pretty much anywhere in Sintra. Note: After visiting Pena Palace and Park, you are just 15 minutes walk from the entrance to the Moorish Castle, another World Heritage attraction that is well worth seeing on the day. From there you can proceed down to the Historic Centre of Sintra by way of a couple of footpaths and hiking trails. Otherwise, back out and take the tour bus, taxi or uber onward to your next intended sightseeing endeavours around Sintra.Visited April 2023Written 17 April 2023
- charmaine825Miami, Florida10 contributionsAmazingMy family and I visited the Pena Palace in May 2023, and our experience was amazing. The worse part of the visit was waiting in line for the people in our time slot to enter the palace. The tickets are sold in time slots to let visitors experience the palace and its history. Once we entered, some arrows easily allowed a guided tour through the castle. There is much Portuguese history to behold as you walk through the palace's corridors. This is a must-see for those visiting Portugal. The palace is a beautiful depiction of Portugal's culture.Visited May 2023Written 9 May 2023
- justme00942 contributionsGive yourself plenty of time and it's worth itThe logistics of getting to Pena Palace and the crowds might make some people give this a bad review; however, if you plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time, it's worth the trip to Sintra. Take the train from the Rossi train station (free with Lisbon card) all the way to Sintra. When you get off the train, you will be in a huge crowd of tourists all looking for a way uphill to the palace. We took bus 434, but in hindsight, I would have taken a tuktuk or uber. The bus takes about 20 minutes to get to the palace. Then you have to stand in line to buy tickets, if you haven't bought tickets in advance. Then you have to walk uphill to the palace, which took us about 10-15 minutes. We were 1/2 hour late for our timed entry, but they let us in anyway. The palace and views were beautiful. We had lunch in the restaurant at the palace which was actually pretty good. After finishing at the palace, we walked to the Moorish Castle (about 15 minute walk). After visiting the Moorish castle, we hopped on a tuktuk to ride back down to the train station (even though our bus ticket included the return trip- the line was way too long for the bus). Tuktuk is 10 euros/person up the hill and 5 euros/person down the hill. Slightly more than the bus, but worth it.Visited May 2023Written 27 May 2023

- Michael K995 contributionsThe exterior is fantastic and a must-see but visiting the interior is a nightmareTHE GOOD: The exterior facade is truly amazing and is a photographer's delight. Both the exotic architecture and the brilliant red and yellow coloring scheme are really gorgeous. You will recognise these unforgettable images long after the visit. THE BAD: Because of the amount of visitors, they have restricted entry based on time slots. So after you buy your tickets, you will likely have quite a few hours to kill before you can go in. THE UGLY: They stated that if you miss your time slot, they will not let you enter afterwards. So you have to get there early enough before your time slot and wait in line just to be safe. When you finally enter the palace, there is plenty of space to roam around the exterior. But visiting the interior is a nightmare. The long line of people move along at a snail's pace. Even if you don't care about a particular room, you are stuck in line since you cannot go anywhere. And if you find a room you find interesting, you have lots of heads and bodies in your picture. When you finish with the interior, you will find that it is nowhere near as beautiful as the National Palace of Queluz which has hardly any visitors.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 June 2023
- TracyEdmonton, Canada21 contributionsMagical ViewsDefinitely a fairytale feel with grand views. Buy your tickets ahead online to save money and time waiting in the line up for tickets. There’s a small hike uphill from the ticket area to the castle and is fairly easy to do. If you have accessibility concerns, there is a trolley that takes people up to the castle. You needed a special ticket for that and I didn’t notice that ticket online. Don’t arrive early or late as there are queues to wait in by time. I didn’t find the lines took long and once inside, everyone moved fairly quickly. There’s lots of opportunity to take photos inside castle and outside. Expect lots of visitors but all in all it went smoothly. At the top, there’s a small restaurant (take out food style) where you can grab a snack before heading out. Easy to order an Uber when your down your tour. We had our Uber take us to Cascais.Visited June 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 2 July 2023

Sintra is a 40 minute train journey from Lisboa Rossio station in the city centre. A 24 hour ticket on a Navegante card is valid for this trip. The 434 tourist bus stops regularly directly outside the train station. A day ticket for these buses costs 13,50€ per person (pay cash or contactless) and they make several stops by the tourist attractions around Sintra. The closest entrance to Pena Palace is a 10-15 minute walk up a steep hill. Alternatively, alight early at Vale dos Lagos for a more relaxed 20-30 minute walk to the palace, as this part of the park is well worth seeing. At both entrances you can buy an entrance ticket from a machine, for 10€ per person. This is for entrance to the park and palace grounds only, a ticket including entrance to the palace interior will cost 20€ per person. However, there is plenty to see without going inside as you can still walk up to the castle ramparts and get the views (unless you go on a cloudy rainy day like I did). Pena Park is well worth the visit from Lisbon as long as you are prepared to walk a fair distance uphill, and I would certainly return on a future trip.

I particularly came to Sintra to see the Palace. I was so excited and booked morning tickets. Once there I was shocked to see so many crowds of people queuing and just everywhere around the site. We went in on our time slot, but the extremely slow-moving queue around the palace became overwhelming as I suffer from anxiety. So I don't really remember too much about the inside of it. I struggled to get any decent photos from outside either.
There is a shuttle bus on site to take you up if you don't want to walk, that is an extra 3 euros per person.
To be honest I enjoyed the other attractions much more as less crowds.
Pena from a distance is a magnificent looking place.

The interior of the palace was relatively boring with a few interesting points. I would stick with visiting the park, if it’s not raining. It was, unfortunately, very foggy due to the rain. I would strongly advise you to save your €20 if it’s raining as you won’t be able to see the magnificent views the palace is famed for. We made the best of the situation and enjoyed the minimal crowds. We caught the bus up to the palace entrance for €3 which was worth it as the cobbles were very slippery. We visited Quinta da Regaleira earlier in the day and loved it. If it’s raining, skip Pena and go to Quinta da Regaliera or wait to do both on a sunny day if your itinerary allows for it.

We only had a few days in Lisbon and many people had told us to visit here. Booking a taxi through Bolt to the Palace meant we avoided the option to get driven up (from what we saw they were charging large amounts to drive up or down to the palace entrance)
We were unlucky with the weather so I’m sure we would’ve had a better overall experience as it was extremely misty.
We chose to walk through the gardens to the palace (there is a bus that drives up also) and you arrive at the entrance where the gift shop is, after walking so far you’d think they would sell water in there.
We had booked to go inside the palace and arrived 15 minutes early and we were still quite far into the queue, once our slot began we spent an hour in stop/start queues to go through the palace which made it a far less enjoyable experience.
There is a cafeteria which you reach at the end of the tour but with the volume of people the queue is very long. After spending so long in the Palace tour and having not eaten or drank it is hard to find energy to explore the gardens afterwards. If you are going on a city break and what to make the most of your time I’d recommend just exploring the gardens as they are beautiful!
Overall it was a nice experience but be prepared to queue!

Booked in advance visit of the Pena Palace with time slot. Put the palace in my navigation but it lead me to all streets with no entry site of the palace did not give any address of a parking area for campers neither did the town, then arriving half an hour late at the cue they did not let me in and I had to buy again a ticket and the to find out we were cueing all through the interior at a snail pace which should have taken 1/2 hour took more then one hour so I would not recommend this town at all.

The town and parks of Sintra are a joy, but visiting Pena Palace is misery. Even with advance tickets, touring the palace is like paying to wait on airport lines while brusque attendants treat you like cattle -- and once in the palace, you're in single-file purgatory for the painful duration of the tour. Avoid Pena Palace in favor of the many other relaxing and lovely parks in the area.

People may say the palace is extravagant. And it is but I must admit I was not pleased by our visit. We took a long ride to get here and when we got here there was tickets at 1:00 we waited 3 hours no food or water and we finally got to the palace. in there is food in the palace. But do you want a cheese and tomato sandwich? You may but me and my family did not we got some chips which was expensive. We made our way through the palace tripping and falling. It has rough ground for walking. Oh and by the way it takes 30 minutes to get up there we walked around in the exterior so excited to see the interior. But by the time we got there the extremely rude security guard told us that our time was up and there was no way to get in. It is extremely frustrating waiting your whole life for a beautiful palace with beautiful interior but to be pushed away. This experience has left me torn. And I was so disappointed to be dismissed and to be disrespected. Hope this helps!!

We visited the palace on a Saturday. The palace by itself is good.
Before we reach the Palace entrance there was a guy stopping cars way before the entrance and trying to convience them to stop at that point and take them up to the entrance. He was claiming that there is no parking lot from the spot he stoped us till the Palace entrance. In fact the are 2 big ones! He was trying to talk people into take them to the palace entrance with his car for a 15EUR fee (plus he would need to take you back as the distance was too far to walk by foot)!
We was trying to impersonate museum staff by wearing a card that looked like an authorized staff from the Portugal miniter. After several attempts on trying to convience us to follow him and us decline him all the time he finally starting swering on us and move toward us is a threatening way. Most probably was on drugs too.

This place definitely has the "wow" factor, even for a jaded, seen-it-all traveller like me. I can't quite say that the inside is worth seeing, though - the outside is better - so if you're in a hurry or on a budget, you could skip it and not miss much. Be warned that it's a PITA to get there, though. It definitely shouldn't be attempted on foot - it's up a steep, winding hill, so you'll be in danger of getting hit by a car even if you're fit enough to make the climb - and the tourist bus is an overcrowded nightmare and takes forever. I recommend a taxi, if you can find one. Oh, and ignore the advice to go early - everybody says to go early, but that's when all the tour buses arrive. We went at 4:30 p.m. and it was fine. I recommend going to Quinta da Regaleira first thing in the morning instead - it's arguably nicer than Pena Palace anyway (the grounds definitely are) - and do Pena Palace late in the day. And bring a packed lunch, because the restaurants in town are overpriced tourist traps.

The building and grounds are spectacular but the operators sell way more tickets per time slot than the palace can accommodate. You spend most of your time inside simply standing, waiting for the line to move. I can't imagine what it's like in the high season.

There is no pre-booking of train tickets from Lisbon to Sintra. Think of it just like a normal city Metro route. Show up at the station, tap your Lisboa Card at the gate entrance sensor and it will open. Go to the platform, get on next outbound service to Sintra and go.
You can watch a helpful YouTube clip made for tourists who need help understanding how to use the Lisboa Card for metro/train rides. Just search for LisboaCard - How to use it?
