    Uppsala Domkyrka - Short review
Already from outside, the cathedral is impressive and beautiful - you can see it from pretty much everywhere. And when you go inside, it is as impressive. Considering it is really close to Stockholm, if you are there, you should really consider a visit not only to Uppsala, but to the Cathedral.

    Very pretty cathedral
It is a lovely cathedral and even though it's the tallest in Scandinavia, it does seem a little small inside. The decorations with stenciling and painting on all the walls was so delicate and beautiful. It doesn't take long to see everything inside, but it's worth a short stroll around. Plus, there are runestones all around the outside that date from 900 and 1,000.

We were lucky as the day we visited a free concert was about to start and we were able to stay and enjoy it. The building was completed in 1435 but the spires and interior (gothic) were not completed until the late 19th C. This cathedral has the longest nave in Scandinavia. Close to the entrance is the tomb of Carl Linnaeus, the scientist, the father of modern botany. There is a chapel that was originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary that was later renovated to hold the tomb of King Gustar Vasa...outside of the chapel is a strange/poorly done wax statue of Mary.

An Unforgettable Journey Through History - Uppsala Cathedral

Uppsala Cathedral, or 'Uppsala domkyrka' as the locals call it, is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture that graces the skyline of Uppsala with its twin spires. Its towering structure, reaching almost 120 meters, makes it Scandinavia's tallest church, and it's not just its exterior size that impresses.

Walking inside, one is immediately struck by the beautiful vaulted ceilings, grand archways, and stunning stained glass windows. These windows tell the story of Uppsala's past, as well as various biblical tales, illuminating the interior with a rainbow of colors when the sun shines through them. The cathedral's interior exudes a peaceful, solemn, and almost mystical atmosphere that invites reflection.

The cathedral's significance extends beyond its architectural beauty; it is steeped in history. Established in the 13th century, it has been the setting for countless historic events, including royal coronations and burials. The tombs of notable Swedish figures like Carl Linnaeus and Gustav Vasa are also housed here, adding another layer of depth to the cathedral's historical importance.

What further sets Uppsala Cathedral apart is the Gustavianum - the city's oldest building turned into a museum. It sits right across from the cathedral, offering a unique collection of artifacts and exhibitions, such as the Augsburg Art Cabinet and a perfectly preserved 17th-century anatomical theater.

The cathedral staff are friendly and well-informed, ready to share knowledge about the building's rich past. The guided tours they offer are well worth considering, providing visitors with insights that may otherwise be overlooked.

Whether you're a history buff, architecture enthusiast, or simply seeking a place for quiet reflection, Uppsala Cathedral is a must-visit. It's a beacon of history, culture, and architectural grandeur that has stood the test of time and continues to captivate all who visit.

Remember to check the church's schedule as it is a working cathedral, and times for touristic visits may vary. There is no entrance fee, but donations are appreciated to help with the maintenance of this magnificent landmark.

In summary, Uppsala Cathedral is not just a church; it's a journey through centuries of Swedish history wrapped up in breathtaking architecture. It is a highlight of any visit to Uppsala, leaving a lasting impression that transcends time.

Beautiful building inside and outside, a really relevant place in the history of Sweden given that it was the place where the coronation of new kings occurred in the past. Quite a few members of the Swedish royalty are also buried here. Admission is free, which is a plus.

This is also the tallest church in all of Scandinavia, which in itself is a good enough reason to check it out.

One of the main attractions of Uppsala is also the tallest church in the Nordic countries. The towers were added and reconstructed due to fire much later than the original part of the church. Originally built as a Catholic Cathedral, the church has long been the primary location of the Church of Sweden. With several different constructions and additions, the style of the church is primarily Gothic but a few different styles blend together to create what you see today. It is not quite as ornate and opulent as so many of the large cathedrals of the center of Europe but it is still a beautiful site worth some time to visit.
