- Ian CSingapore, Singapore106 contributionsBeautiful Fortress and Insightful Military MuseumNice scenic place to take a stroll. Good views of the area and many nice places to take photos. The military museum is also worth a visit, it provides a run through of Norway's military past and present.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 May 2023
- VinnieLondonDoha, Qatar11,805 contributionsGreat viewsCastle located around 10 minute walk from city centre next to Quayside. Excellent views across the city and Oslo Fjord. Interesting visitors centre and nice park in grounds including an outside concert venue. You can also see the stables for the regiment which is still active on site. Worth a stroll through linked to a quayside visit.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 June 2023
- QueenslandTommyBurpengary, Australia1,448 contributionsPerfect for a walk and gain some Norwegian historyFascinating place to visit and stroll around, 10 minutes from the train station and right on the quay. The views from the fortress wall over the water & city are beautiful, sit and relax on the multiply benches soaking in this historical site, the Resistance Museum is located within the grounds. There are some steep paths with cobblestone.Visited May 2023Travelled soloWritten 19 June 2023
- Navigator311887Ocean Springs, Mississippi5 contributionsEnjoyable Historic AfternoonWell maintained historical castle. It is free to walk the grounds and outer courtyard. I highly recommend touring the interior. An audio guide explains each room and gives historical facts and stories of those who once inhabited Akershus Fortress. The castle is furnished with lovely period pieces and wonderful artwork. We really enjoyed our visit.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 June 2023
- dave2014449 contributionsDecent castle, authenticly presentedNice and quiet when we went, made a relaxing day taking in the lovely scenery and buildings. The open areas are free as is the small museum. 100 NOK is worth paying for the main buildings.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 July 2023
- Maggie_NHamNottingham, United Kingdom297 contributionsFortress as a Prison in recent historyAncient fortress prominent on the harbourside. Can stroll around the fortress's cobbled grounds. A visit to the Visitors Centre is worthwhile. Not only covers history of the fortress but particularly as a Prison in recent history. The terrible conditions and brief insights into prisoners' daily routine and meal times. It was very much in use in 1920s and 1930s. Finally decommissioned in 1950s.Visited June 2023Written 18 July 2023
- RYC88Centreville, Virginia1,278 contributionsInteresting museums and a great view of the city and harborYou can't go in the castle, but it's a nice walk around the bastions and you get a great view of the harbor and there's no charge to walk the grounds. There is a little museum at the visitor's center which told about the queen who had lived there to give context. The Norwegian Resistance Museum does have an entrance fee, but the way everything about the Norwegian resistance movement is presented with dioramas and papers and documents is really well done and worth the admission price. There are guided tours during the summer, so you should check the website for the timing.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 July 2023
- orion011680 contributionsIt’s okI love exploring old castles but watch where you enter this castle from… that will make a large difference on your experience. There are many ports of entry but some will leave you wondering where you are. The museum is worth it although there is little explanation of the historical or cultural significance of the castle. All entrances are a challenge for strollers and wheelchairs because of the incline and large cobble stones. It’s ok, but of your time is short…. Take a pass.Visited August 2023Travelled soloWritten 2 August 2023
- Sab Ine243 contributionsTo visit 👌I loved the place, you can spend the whole day there as the castle is big with very wide parc and there are museums there you can visit. I LOVED it. I recommend the oslo pass to enjoy all the museums and transports for free.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 August 2023
- Traveler OWashington DC, District of Columbia1,068 contributionsFortress of TimeOslo's fortress is worth visiting as there are a number of exhibits to be seen and good pics to be taken from atop the ramparts. You enter the fort for free and then walk around. Many take bike tours here. Highly recommend visiting the Norwegian Resistance Museum which covers the Occupation of Norway during WWII and the Resistance Movement's activities against Nazi rule.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 August 2023

Opening hours not clear. We had purchased the Oslo pass and had checked opening times etc to make sure we got the most from our card, the castle is only open on weekends during the winter, although the website states the fortress is open, which is was, that being the grounds, the actual castle is closed during the week in winter. A bit disappointed as its looks lovely. The views from the fortress are good.

The climb up to the fortress is lovely with the harbor as a backdrop and the resistance museum, and the castle are both worth a visit. It was decorated for Christmas and that added to the lovely feel. Highly recommend.

A visit to a castle is a good way to round of any holiday and this was no exception. People with limited mobility may find it hard going but it is worth the visit if you can manage it,

Not far from the National Museum or Oslo Fjord docks Akershus Fastning is a medieval castle in the Norwegian capital. Once built to protect the King and City the fortress is open to the public daily for free, though the castle itself is ticketed.
Originally constructed in the 13th century the fort also contains a military museum with canons still mounted and pointed over extensive views of the waterfront.

A really beautiful fort that's held up over the years. There's a lot of things to do nearby that aren't "officially" part of it - such as monuments to war victims, Jewish Holocaust victims and more. The QR codes around the castle are great for some extra information on each section. All in all a lovely visit for a clear day.

Three and a half stars. The castle and grounds are certainly worth visiting and it is included in the Oslo Pass.
The walk through the castle rooms and galleries is excellent, providing a real feel of the different parts of the building.
It is actually a working building hosting State events, so it is somewhat mystifying why it has such poor historical information and poor exhibits. Surely they could collect more interesting and historic pieces of furniture, ornaments and pictures. One is left with a slightly disconcerted feeling as a result.
It should be great, the setting is top notch but they have managed to make the castle exhibits somehow unimpressive. If you consider the fine collection in the Folk museum and so on, the castle could be so much better.
Worth visiting though and next to the Resistance Museum which in contrast is a solid five stars.

The castle offers good views...that's for sure. Regarding its historical information, it lacked it somehow, even though it's free to enter. The grounds are nice to explore but wear comfy shoes because of the cobblestones.

Yes, it is open, 7 days a week, from 10:00 am through 5:00 pm. The hours will be shorter after September first. There is an admission fee, with discounts for children students and seniors. It also offers a family ticket.

We actually were there in April and the tourist office told us it would be open but it was not. When we arrived the sign on the door posted hours and days but nevertheless it was closed all day. This was the only time we encountered this in all of Norway. Other museums were very organized. So the moral of the story is: when you get there, just go and hopefully you will be able to get in. If it is the same week as Easter, it will be closed the entire week.

Regarding hours, I see that the "grounds" around the castle are open until 9 pm (21:00). What time does the museum/inside the castle close???
Thanks.
