About
The Royal Castle in Warsaw (Polish: Zamek Królewski w Warszawie) is a castle residency that formerly served throughout the centuries as the official residence of the Polish monarchs. Initially the complex served as the residence of the Dukes of Masovia, and since the sixteenth century, the seat of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth: the King and Parliament. In its long history the Royal Castle was repeatedly plundered and devastated by the invading Swedish, Brandenburgian, Prussian and Tsarist armies. Burned and looted by the Nazi Germans following the Invasion of Poland in 1939 and almost completely destroyed in 1944 after the failed Warsaw Uprising, the Castle was completely rebuilt and reconstructed. Reconstruction of the castle carried out in 1971–1984 was led by the Civic Committee, responsible for the reconstruction of Warsaw. In 1980, the Royal Castle, together with the Old Town was registered as a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site.

- rtdoodManchester, United Kingdom225 contributionsSheer GrandeurImpressive, but as its situated in the old town prepare yourself for lots and lots of tourists! You head into the courtyard, and can purchase a ticket from the admissions desk, before heading over to the entrance and down a staircase to the cloakroom and collect the audio guide. You are recommended to take off bags and coats in the cloakroom, as there are no outside areas to the tour. From here there are signposts to direct you the correct way for the royal tour round the palace. You follow the pathing, logically from room to room, with the audio guide explaining key features such as ornate furniture, artwork and historical context as you go through. Each room is incredibly ornate, but not entirely original due to the extensive damage caused from the Second World War, but has been recreated as accurately as is possible and that certainly fooled me! The throne room and banqueting hall stick out in my memory for sheer grandeur. It took about 1 and a half hours to walk round the rooms with the audio-guide. It is worth noting, you are kept at least a meter away from most objects in each room for good reason, so you'll be needing to zoom your camera if you are looking to get up close. Attempt it yourself and a member of staff situated in each room will tell you otherwise! I made do with wide angle view on my phone as with just so much capture the wide angle lens could do this best, particularly the ceiling paintings! It is worth visiting this attraction, despite the crowds. I would suggest visiting later in the day if the crowds bother you. Admission isn't cheap either but if you want to visit a royal palace, and are unable to visit Kings Jan 3rds Palace then this is the more convenient option. I would also say as a comparison between the 2, this is the smaller palace but comes looking a lot more 'polished'.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 21 December 2023

We always enjoy going to visit castles and museums, but the Royal Castle by far has to be the worst experience we have had. We luckily went on a Wednesday- which is free admission, but would have been very disappointed to pay anything for this experience. We constantly got asked to show our tickets, even though it was a free admission. The staff were awfully rude, not helpful and did not speak much English at all. When asking the guides for any help, all we got was 'check ticket' and then pointed to a direction... not helpful at all. We spent a good 10 minutes walking around in circles to then get sent to an exit and back round to a cloakroom to take coats off. It was so unorganised and not sign posted very well. The cloakroom was a complete waste of time and staff would just sit there while people were waiting to hand in coats. We must have spent 30 minutes in there when we finally found the route. It was so outdated, boring and the staff were so rigid and rude, that you couldn't ask them for any pictures or any information on the items in the room. It was just a glorified tourist trap and everyone that we saw in there, just walked through and left quickly. Please do not waste your time going, and spend it elsewhere in Warsaw. If you do choose to go, go on Wednesdays and in the morning as there is no queue and free. It is a shame, but the staff need some practice in customer service, the guards need to be more helpful and the castle itself needs to use the money it charges customers on the maintenance and upkeep of the building. Disappointing!!

Even though the castle itself was probably the most beautiful I’ve ever seen, with stunning rooms and fantastic paintings, unfortunately the staff absolutely ruined the entire experience. Starting with a mean lady asking one person from our group to leave their backpack in the locker, while letting other tourists enter with even bigger bags on their backs, followed by rude women eyeing us while guarding the exposition rooms. The “cherry on top”: getting literally screamed at by a very angry security guy after asking him nicely where the gift shop is. Also, none of the staff we encountered spoke any other language than Polish. As excited as I was to see the Royal Castle, unfortunately the staff really ruined the impression of it.

The interior of the Castle was very nice, we did the audio guide and one of them kept malfunctioning. However, what should have been a perfectly pleasant tour was ruined by the overbearing security personal who more closely resembled surly prison guides. What promised to be a regal and uplifting experience turned into an oppressive boarding on sinister one. Lots of beautiful treasures, too bad, because we couldn’t wait to get out of there. At one, point, we were sitting quietly in a downstairs rest area with benches when two of the “prison guides” stood staring daggers at us. What a shameful disgrace to have such a National Treasure so poorly served by its employees. Not even the Swiss Guard at the Vatican could compare to these characters.

This castle has an interesting history: the original has been destroyed but polish people wanted to rebuild it during communist era. The furniture are mostly original. Worth to visit.

We visited on April 4 when they were filming something within the premises of the castle so it was chaotic, entrance blocked by parked vehicles and signs were missing or not very visible to tourists. Buying the ticket was very tricky. The security guard could not speak english and spoke Polish to us. We went towards the side of the castle and entered the wrong entrance where we could buy tickets. I think that entrance is for a different tour at the castle. The women working there could not speak english and referred us to another woman there who could speak some english. But I think she did not understand us because she gave us wrong directions. We just wanted to buy tickets but she instructed us to go to the place near pizza hut. Of course that was wrong. We went back to the main guard but just the same, no help at all. We met other tourists asking where to buy tickets since they also had been going back and forth just like us. After some 20 minutes or so, we found the entrance to the ticket office. It was sort of blocked by the vehicles with sign but not placed properly.
Afyer buying the tickets, then we had to go out of the building again to find the entrance to the “Royal Route” tour. It was near the pizza hut but there was no sign at all.
The place is not tourist friendly and lacking information. Language is a big barrier. Why they don’t hire people who speak english?
The entrance to the Royal Route did not look royal at all. The door was old and not nice and did not look inviting at all.
Inside the building: We had to go down to the lower level to the cloakroom where we could leave our jackets. On the same level is where we could get the audio guide. The one in charge there could speak english. Audio guide is available in different languages. The restrooms or toilets are also located there.
The exhibit itself is beautiful. We were impressed by the details in the display. However, the staff there working as security looked very unfriendly and in fact very hostile towards visitors. Wrong character for hired personnels for a museum like that. It felt like they were prison guards during soviet times.
The rooms, halls and thrones were amazing. The audio guide was very useful in learning about each section in the castle museum.
Do not expect a real castle there. The building doesn’t look like a castle as we know how castles look like. They should rename it Royal Palace in Warsaw instead of Royal Castle in Warsaw.
Anyway, we had a good time but after an hour listening to the audio guide, it can get tiring.

We went on a Wednesday when entry was free and looking back I'm very glad I didn't spend a penny!! The whole disaster started at the entrance, when the unfriendly staff at the counter gave us the tickets. As we were about to go in, a security guard stopped us and ordered us to take off our jackets. Otherwise we were not allowed to enter the castle! On the tour itself, there were security guards in every room, who monitored and disciplined us at every step, so we couldn't enjoy the tour. You weren't even allowed to go back one room. Overall everyone was so rude and condescending. NEVER AGAIN! DO NOT RECOMMEND!

With your ticket you get an illustrated leaflet with map and short description of the most interesting rooms. Also, as you tour the rooms THERE ARE explanations on stands both on Polish and English. It's enough if you're not interested to tiny details.
You can buy an audio guide at start, but I personally didn't find it necessary, and it's more time consuming.

I would say three to four because I also visited the Gallery there (separate entrance fee- well worth it) You are better to allow more time and if you leave early there are dozens of great restaurants around the castle to enjoy a snack at.
