The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul regarded as the most famous Baroque church of Vilnius is recognized worldwide as one of the most beautiful Catholic churches in the world and I cannot agree more. It is definitely a pearl of architecture.

The church’s founder, M. K. Pacas, died in 1682 before construction was completed. M.K. Pacas is buried in a crypt just below the entrance to the church, with an inscription that reads, “Here lies a sinner.”

A church was built on the site where, as they say, there was once a pagan temple, and then wooden churches. Externally, this church looks modest. It is decorated with two figures on the sides of the balcony - Saints Augustine and Stanislaus. And - the inscription in Latin: "REGINA PACIS FUNDA NOS IN PACE". Let's go inside - be silent and admire!

The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul is first on the list of churches on churchpop.com and is recognised as one of the most beautiful Catholic churches in the world. Without a doubt, it is the most famous Baroque church in Vilnius. Its special interior is filled with about two thousand statue.

This church is quite spectacular I have to say. Its stucco interior is quite stunning. We were unable to spend too much time there, however, as there were weddings lining up to take place!

The church has a very special total-white interior and looks absolutely magnificent inside. The exterior is still in process of renovation - it will also look gorgeous once it's finished.
You can also visit a small dungeon part of the church for 2 euros - kindly ask an attendant lady to turn on the lights for you.

Exterior being renovated but interior was typically impressive. Bothe the altar and organ were well worth seeing.

Glad we made the stop.

It’s quite a trek up to this church from just about anywhere in the Old Town and what a colossal letdown it was!

The entire front of the church is fitted with scaffolding and covered in dark green safety netting! No chance of seeing the exterior of this church any time soon.

The interior also leaves something to be desired. Most churches have enough ambient lighting that visitors can actually see details of the art and architecture of the church. In the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, this is simply not the case!

I asked the little lady at the entrance if maybe she could turn on a bit of light. Her response: €2 for 5 minutes of light or €5 for ??? minutes of light.

At first, I thought she must be joking, but nope! She even led me to the coin-operated switch at the right side of the main altar, and as soon as she entered my €2, on came the lights.

So I zoomed around trying to catch the intricate details of whatever I could, but exactly 5 minutes later, out went the lights again, thrusting me back into an environment where I was wishing I had night-vision goggles.

I also wondered how this pay-for-lighting plan worked for the big tour group that had just left. Did each of them pay €2 for 5 minutes of light?

Surely not, but If so, that completely goes against common sense: light in any church benefits each person in the church at the same time. And indeed, if this were the case, the end result would be 25 people at €2/person = €50 for 5 minutes worth of light.

If this were not the case, then it’s a penalty on solo visitors.

This whole notion of paying for a few minutes of light is bizarre. Why not just request the visitor to make a €2 donation?

In any case, better to just give this place a miss!

It was a hot day for this adventure but we walked along the road from old town which was not scenic to a covered church. The interior was quite nice but after seeing so many churches that week, it honestly wasn't worth the effort. Perhaps if they had not been doing necessary repairs we could have admired the exterior.

One of the must-see churches if you come to Vilnius and want to discover the marvels of the architecture. It is even called the most beautiful church of Vilnius.

When you go to Vilnius, you will understand, that the city has a lot of churches. But St Peter and St Paul is the nicest of them all. So this is the one church you can't miss during your stay in Vilnius. Just keep in mind, it's outside of the old town. But the interior is beautiful!
