Try to get there when they are changing the guards; it is quite spectacular and well worth watching. The square itself is huge so take time to look around. The Kyrgyzstan flag is very impressive especially if there is a bit of a wind!

A nice park and square - good place for photos. Not very crowded, easy walk from nearby attractions and restaurants.

Interesting to see the way different countries display their character. Clearly Kyrgystan is proud of its flag.

The changing of the guards is such a unique and cool thing. The guards stay still for hours each day. The plaza around it is also beautiful with the iconic statue and the giant tall flag!

This square is worth visiting with the imposing statue/flag in front of waterfalls and flower beds. The guard change is good with their John Cleese walk. I was there dead on midday to see it so think it must be on the hour.

This is the central historical place in Bishkek wherein the giant statue of Manas (considered the founder of the state who unified 40 odd tribes) is in display. The hugely spacious & open square also houses the now under renovation "State History Museum" behind which...More

A typical soviet-era town square with giant flag, gardens, and fountains surrounded by cafes, fast food, and small shops. You won’t miss this square on any visit to Bishkek!

I agree, Marshutka's are the best and cheapest way of travel. Did only two countries (Almaty-Bishkek), both are safe.
