The door was part of the antique city of Montevideo which was surrounded by a wall to prevent attacks. This gate is the last remain.

This gate connects the old town with the newer parts of Montevideo. Nice arch to see from a distance.

We walked from the charming old city, through the gate, as you do, entering the bustling new part of the city. Great for a photo stop, if you can get anywhere near it. It used to be part of the city walls, and citadel, which...More

Puerta de la Ciudadela has nothing extraordinary about it, except that it connects the Plaza Independencia with the Ciudad Vieja, so you simply can't miss it when going one way or the other. Not very large and obviously restored, it provides some photo ops and...More

The gate is well preserved. Everyone stops to take photos. It is in the middle of the street but very easy to get to.

The gate is right between the old and new city. As we were there with a guide, we were priviledged to learn about the history of the gate and all that it represents!

This was once the gate into town. Now it just stands alone out in the central square, just looks odd. But everyone comes here for a photo, and it is the center.

A landmark that was once a part of the wall around the city is now just one of the gates. It does mark the entrance to a pedestrian only street and on the other side onto the Presidential Plaza.

Is a beautiful part of the city, we were fortunate enough that the day was georgeous! All around that area is amizing arquitecture and the plaza, it's a busy section of the capital, one block ahead is the bus stop.

Inevitably, everybody has to walk through the gate as the connection between the Old and the New City. Nothing special. The old photographs look a lot more interesting.
