The Pavilion of Prince Teng, a Tang Dynasty pavilion, boasts nine stories. Visitors must climb many stairs, but the stunning city views and unique architecture are worth the effort.

If you come to Nanchang as a tourist there’s no reason to skip this site. It is the tourist attraction.

I suggest you come in the evening for the full experience. After 5:30pm one can buy the evening ticket which includes the tower tour and the right to watch the evening dance and city lights display. Each floor of the tower tells the history of the tower and its frequent destruction and reconstruction.

There is also a famous tale of a young poet named Wang Bo, who composed a ballad while attending a banquet at this tower 1200 years ago.

The tour is conducting Chinese and there is no English version. But the grounds, the tower display, and the light show/performances don’t require much explanation. The dance is a recreation of the dances performed in the Tang dynasty, over 1200 years ago.

Although the site is a recreation, I think it’s done well and I can recommend visiting.

Located on the east bank of the Ganjiang River in Nanchang, the Pavilion of Prince Teng enjoys the fame of being the top of the three most famous towers in China, which has long been a popular place for tourists to clock in. Initially built in the Tang Dynasty, the Pavilion of Prince Teng has a history of more than 1,300 years. For a long time, the Pavilion has been witnessing the development of Nanchang. After experiencing 28 times of rebirths from the ashes, the pavilion is still dazzling and enchanting. In recent years, the Chinese government established and expanded the North Park based on the original Pavilion site, which is rich in folk performances and colorful lights, making visitors linger and mesmerize. Tourists can take a walk in the scenic area, climb the Pavilion, admire the lanterns and lights, and enjoy local food and performances. As a well-known scenic spot that combines ancient and modern civilization, the Pavilion of Prince Teng offers the public a rare opportunity for entertainment and exploration of history.

Tengwang Pavilion is a magnificent tower with a fascinating history. The young prodigy Wang Bo back in Song dynasty had written his final poem on this very said building, and you can totally feel what he feels about his country back in the days. The light of the Tengwang Pavilion makes it even more glamorous than in the morning. There was also a traditional Han dance with accompanying music. It was a memorable experience and I do not hesitate to recommend going there.

Though only built in 1989, the Tengwang Pavilion is well worth a visit and is based on previous pleasure palaces built on the site since 653.

The grounds are lovely and the pavilion itself beautifully presented with fantastic waterfront views of the city. Unlike most other areas of Nanchang, it is pedestrian friendly and can be accessed from the newly built riverside path.

What you see may be a bit touristy and a romanticised version of China, but it makes a pleasant change from the high-paced ultra-modern centre of Nanchang and is well worth the 50rmb entrance fee. We also paid a further 30rmb for the theatre show, approximately 30 minutes of traditional dancing.

Despite being a Saturday and very busy with locals, it was easy to find, easy to enter and, as per most sites in Nanchang we were the only Europeans there- so were asked to pose for numerous photos throughout our visit.

Definitely worth a visit.

I enjoyed strolling around the grounds and seeing the Pavilion from lots of angles. Inside is some great art, pottery and decorative features. You can walk or take the lift up to the top level which gives a nice view of the city. Pretty relaxed visit but exited via South Gate and had trouble getting to a proper road to catch a cab. I’d recommend enter and exit both by North Gate. You can buy tickets at the gate and not difficult despite language barrier

I took the subway and exit at Wanshou Palace Station. It walk for about 980m to this place. As I visited in end Mar, low season, the entrance ticket is 25rmb. I suppose Tengwang Pavilion is the top attraction in Nanchang. There were many local tours groups around.

I was amazed that this building was ruined or torn down 28 times and the current one was rebuilt in 1989. There are 6 floors to visit, with each floor presenting various exhibits, paintings and artworks by famous artists of that era. I had a better appreciation of its rich history. At the 6th floor, I had a great view of the surrounding city, park and river. Overall, highly recommend to visit if you have a couple of hours in Nanchang.
