You would not expect to find such a road in the Highlands - rather in Austrian (or Swiss) Alps.
Alas, the weather was horrible, and we could not enjoy much of the great vista.

A bit slower than usual today due to French Top Gear filming on the road.

Sheildaig is lovely and has a good pub and restaurant. Applecross is lovely too but I think its not a good base, unless you like the hairy drive on a regular basis! We stayed in a lodge in Achintraid, just outside of Kishorn for 1 week, a few miles from Lochcarron (see Wilderness Cottages). But I would recommend staying somewhere less isolated as its nice to have facilities when the weather is bad (as it was with us last year).
