Ships, historic home, and a garden
Neat museum in a beautiful house with a lovely garden. Very friendly staff. The museum is situated over three floors with many models of ships that are important to the history of Savannah. The museum also shares the history of the house. Gardens are open to the public and a nice respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Thank you, were very glad you enjoyed your visit!

    A highly recommended visit
This is a hidden gem that's not so hidden. It's walkable within the downtown area, but it's not as top-of-mind as some of the other historic houses. If you like ships or maritime history, it's wonderful. The ship and naval models are incredible, and there's lots of history about shipbuilding and the vessels that served through wartime and peacetime in and around Savannah. There are 3 floors of models, art, and nautical collectibles. Don't miss the exhibit on the lower level with the captain's wheelhouse. The gardens are also lovely.
Thank you for such a lovely review! We're very happy you enjoyed your visit!

    Bring a flashlight:)
We had a great time viewing all the model ships. Great way to spend an hour reading some interesting history of Savannah, as well as more general Maritime stories. We also had a helpful guide.
Thank you so much! We're happy you enjoyed your visit!

Worth the time to visit, but needs clear directions on how to enter since main entrance is closed.
There was a note posted at the front to enter through the garden but no other signage or employee posted to direct us from there. We wandered around for several minutes until we found the gift shop entrance. It would’ve been nice to have signage or directions posted. Once inside the museum, the experience was great. All the employees were nice and informative. The displays were amazing.
We appreciate your feedback and will work to make the entrance communication more visible. I'm delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit, and we hope to see you again!

Wonderful Display of Intricately Detailed Model Ships
Ships at Sea Maritine Museum is housed in the lovely Greek Revival Scarbrough House designed by English architect William Jay. The home in the historic district was restored by a Historic Savannah Foundation in the 70s and in the 90s became the maritime museum. One may enjoy the museum at leisure and enjoy amazing ship models, painting, and other antiques like scrimshaw, china, and other relics. Upon arrival be sure to get a mini flashlight to look inside the models at all the incredible details on the ships.
We are so thrilled that you stopped by and enjoyed your stay at Ships of the Sea! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with everyone.

Best thing I saw in Savannah
This is the real gem of our trip to Savannah. Sure we saw the sights, rode the river, and generally went everywhere we could in our three days here. Don Goll knew so much about every little details of the models. Go here if you like history.
Thank you so much for taking the time to come visit us and share your wonderful experience!

    Model ships
This museum has amazing model ships from old wooden vessels to current. The models are huge and have great detail. The building itself is beautiful. The grounds, though small, are pleasant to walk around.
Thank you so much for taking the time to visit us and tell us about your experience! We're so glad that you enjoyed the models, building and gardens and would love to see you again next time you are in town!

We visited Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum in Savannah GA on 2/18/2024. Paid $25 for two admissions, the fee for which included parking in the Museum parking lot. I was very disturbed to return to my car upon leaving, and find a notice on my windshield from the Museum abruptly stating that I was parked "IN VIOLATION OF PRIVATE PROPERTY, THIS IS YOUR ONLY WARNING. IF FOUND IN VIOLATION AGAIN, YOUR VEHICLE WILL BE TOWED." This was inappropriate, inaccurate, and exceptionally rude guest relations from the Museum staff, who admitted to the mistake, telling me that they get a lot of people parking there that do not visit the Museum. I told them that mistakes such as this, by them, would be easy to avoid if they either gave guests a simple parking pass to put in their car window when the guest bought their ticket, or if they simply had each guest register their vehicle license plate number at the time of ticket purchase. The staff member did not seem interested in my suggestions, and did not apologize for ticketing my car - he only made excuses. The second disturbing aspect of my paid visit was that, as can be seen on the bank credit card record, the Museum is categorizing payments as "miscellaneous food stores - convenience market" instead of "Museums." What is up with that? Makes one wonder if they are in compliance with USA non-profit tax laws, or attempting some other shady practice. Is sum, the museum operations or administrative staff appear to be uncaring and rude to their guests, and inept at managing their administrative and operational responsibilities.

We apologize for your unpleasant experience and appreciate you taking the time to let us know how we can improve. We are currently in transition to different parking management, and we strive to be sure our guests have easily available parking. We apologize for our mistake and will look into implementing a pass system so that this doesn't happen again. We also work tirelessly to be sure that we are in compliance with all certifications and tax laws, and happily provide our licenses and documentation on our walls in view of the public. Thank you for your patience and honesty and will do our best to improve the experience for our future guests.
