We visited as a group from our Scenic River Cruise . We had a guide show us around. On occasions he was a little hard to hear as he preferred to talk rather than use the microphone with our earpiece box .

We saw a film first about how the barriers were engineered & why they were put up . It was fascinating and very interesting.

We then went into a 360 room that showed how frightening the floods of 1953 must have been, there were special effects that were very realistic. We had a look around the exhibit and went to see the barriers up close .

We would have liked more time here to walk around on our own to look at the exhibition.

Although we didn’t see this , there are other attractions here . There was a restaurant too.

Glad we chose this to come & see. Would recommend a visit

Really good visitor centre and display area. Lots to see and the Great Storm Experience is very lifelike. Great place for kids too. The actual Storm Barrier construction is mind boggling in it engineering. A must visit site.

I was with a tour group excursion to the Delta Works. I was blown away. Helpful video in English about the engineering feats to build it, and an "immersive" experience about the 1953 flood that was the catalyst for building these storm surge protectors. Tour guide took us into the actual barrier, and then we could go up top as well. (Very windy, no surprise) Very knowledgeable and informative. It was one of the highlights of my vacation!

Very interesting to see. No tours, just a nice stop with a shop and restaurant. BUT if you can go to the Flood Museum you won't be disappointed! The museum is very educational and explains the floods and reason for all the dykes.

Very interesting! We were with an organized group, and got the distinct impression that you need to be in a group to tour the Delta Works. You might want to call ahead to see if you can join a tour.

The tour began with a brief (30 minute) film about the area, how and why the works were developed. Our guide then walked us to an actual section of the works. We were able to walk inside and through the section. Culminating with a visit to the top of the works (for those wanting to do the extra steps).

Definitely an interesting tour for adults. Not at all appropriate for young children! Way too technical, not safe for little ones, and well above their ability to comprehend.

The Netherlands, one of the Low Countries in Europe, has a fascinating history of keeping back the North Sea. A drive along this combination of dams, barriers and dikes, culminating in the tour of the Maeslant storm surge barrier, will illuminate and impress you with the Dutch success. New Orleans has consulted with them in rebuilding after Katrina.

Went here with a group of 8, ages ranging from 17 to 82. My son is studying mechanical engineering, and we thought that he would be thrilled to learn about this marvel of Dutch engineering. The Works are very impressive, and the tour is certainly worth taking. However, the guide (who was supposed to deliver the info in both Dutch and English) spent the majority of the time speaking in Dutch, and added a sentence or two in English as an afterthought. The water park was clearly designed for little kids, and nobody in our group had any interest in visiting. The 4D theater (where you can experience what it was like in the great flood of 1953) was well-designed, but only lasted 15 minutes. The film (in Dutch with English subtitles) showing how the Works were constructed was nice - but was clearly from the late 1970s or early 1980s, and hasn’t been updated. Overall, we felt that the place had so much untapped potential, and left a bit disappointed.

some good models and explanations during the tour inside the barrier. The flood control project was rebuilt in 1947 (after World War 2), after it and two other locations were bombed to flood the Germans out of most of the Netherlands – enabling the Allies to offload materials into the port of Antwerp. The flood control works were extended after serious flooding in 1953 from the North Sea when many Dutch people died.

Highly recommend the guided tour of the Delta Works facility at East Scheldt. The indoor video in the Visitors Center at the Delta Water Park and the museum exhibits provided background information about the reasons for building the flood barriers and how they were constructed. Visuals like photos showed the extent of flooding damage in the past and a timeline showed how often these disasters occurred, maps of the area showed where the dams have been placed, diagrams explained how each pylon was constructed and stabilized, and small models showed the work at the construction site. The pros and cons of the project were openly discussed showing that engineers, on the advice of environmental scientists, agreed to keep the sluice gates open to allow the "dead" estuaries to return to a normal state. The idea for the project started after the disastrous 1953 flood and was completed about 30 years later. The 1 1/2 hour tour concluded with a walk out to one of the pylons where visitors saw the sluice barriers up close and the tower out in the North Sea that communicates with dam operators about the changing conditions of the sea. It was amazing how accurate the engineering skills were in those days prior to computers to be able to install the 2 sluice blades with just a 30 cm difference. The basalt rocks around the base of each pylon, about 40 meters in height, were very noticeable when looking down into the swirling water of the North Sea below. All together at this site there were 65 pylons spaced over a distance of 3 miles. The engineers even built a road on top of the barriers in order to connect various the land masses in that area. Note that it can be quite windy and cooler at the barriers than at the Visitor Center. Check also TA reviews for Deltawerken Oosterscheldt.
