We did this as part of an organised tour with tour lago chungara, who seem to be aligned with Mayuru tours. The notes said we might be the only ones to explore this amazing landscape, and indeed we were for most of the time. Due to the rain the day before, even the lithium extraction was on hold, or at least not shipped away which is in an area you cannot visit). We had 2 small walks along the salt lake, saw a decent number of flamingos (not in their hundreds), saw some even fly, and thus in their full glory. Furthermore we saw also vicuñas roaming about. Not that the latter are hard to spot in this part of the altiplano. Nearby we also saw rhea birds with their many chicks. And all this is surrounded by mountains and volcanoes.
If you have time, also visit the natural Polloquere hotspring. We did not go in the water, and there are no facilities to change, just enjoyed the amazing landscape and colours from the mineral deposits in the water and just outside. Great place for a pick nick.

A visit to Surire requres an expensive tour from Arica or your own vehicle. If you the latter, you can approach from one of three directions. The first, the longest, is from Colchane on the road from Iquique to the Bolivian border via the deserted village of Isluga. Ther second is from the north from Putre, via Guallatire. This may be the easiest. The third is from the Arica road south of Putre via Belen. This is rough ('ripio') but the most fun. The view over the Salar as you approach is stupendous.

The Salar contains large amounts of Borax which is removed by the company Quiborax. There are all thrtee kinds of Andean flamingoes, lots of vicunas and vizcachas (tame near the CONAF refugio. If lucky, you may see a condor or suris (rheas). Don't expect to be overwhelmed by tourists! You can stay in the Refugio although, in early 2014, it is closed for an upgrade. Contact CONAF before starting.

The experience of a chilly night sitting in the hot springs under the stunning canopy of stars is something I will never forget! We camped near the springs and the following day toured around the circular road stopping at overlooks to watch the flamingos, vicunas and the rheas that look like a mix between ostriches and emus. I would recommend a tour guide - there are some areas that are not supposed to be accessed by the public when you are wildlife-watching, and there are two dangerously hot pools in the large hot spring area. At 4,200 metres, we were also suffering from altitude sickness, and the tour guide had to supply some oxygen at one point. Coca tea worked well for those of us who didn't have to worry about blood tests. I wouldn't recommend coming in winter, it was simply TOO ridiculously freezing cold to be in a tent (approx -14C). Come in autumn or spring!

The drive to the salt flat is stunning. Various colours, changes in topography, lots of animals, saw the well hidden vizcacha which looks like a chinchilla and rabbit ears cross, flamingos. Stunning view of the salad de surfer with a mountain back drop. We also drove to a geothermal pool for a swim and the water was very hot! Great experience!

Came here with Mayuru tours (Putre). Did the entire circuit of the Salar. Lots of Andean and Puna flamingoes on the water, rhea and tinamou running past the car. It's a long drive from Putre but definitely a great day out.

We did the circuit Arica - Codpa (one night) - Putre (two nights) - Arica (one night). Its VERY recommendable to start the trip in Codpa, which is located at 1850 meters, before moving to Putre (3500 meters) Salar de Surire (4000 meters) and Lago Chungara (4500 meters). Its very recommendable to rent a 4WD and take 20 liters extra fuel. This considering we rented a car with a tank capacity of 80 liters, some only have 50 - 60 liters. You CAN do the whole trip in a 2WD, but it just adds the risk of getting stuck, which is not a good scenario in places where you may be the only car passing during a given day. Also bring water and drink lots of water to help you getting used to the altitude. We found that arriving in Codpa in late afternoon, one day to travel from Codpa to Putre (two nights in Codpa) Day two travel to Salar de Surire, with thermal bath at the extreme south-east side of the lake, driving around the lake and hitting back towards Putre, but halfway on the way back towards the highway swinging right (taking the A95) to Lago Chungara was the perfect way to go. Last day either Socoroma or Azapa and a relaxed afternoon in Arica.

Don.t miss this experience. The long way is worth with no esitation. The road to go is spectacular and then the view on the salar with lamas, vicunas, flamingos is spectacular. You can easily do the round all around the salar. Don.t miss a bath into the hot pool, really great.

The salt floats are vast and stunning. It is worth the cost, time and altitude sickness to see this glorious place - worth making sure your guide/driver carries oxygen......

It takes you a while to get here from Putre (about 3 hours of 4WD drive) but it gets you a place well off of the tourist trail and to places that few people have ever seen. The salt flat has flamingos, llamas and alpacas. Also there is an amazing volcanic natural hot spring that is well worth bringing some bathers to go swimming. All in all, its a remote salt flat that rewards visitors with beautiful views and untouched landscapes.

Not many people visit this place, but go there while it is still off the beaten track. A great tour by car around this salt flat and we saw flamengo's, birds, salt being blown in the air by the wind, etc. There's even a hot spring on the edge of the salt flat where you can bath for free. A tour is recommended, or you need to have a 4WD car and a really good map with some offroad experience. Take (one) the wrong exit(s) and you'll end up in Bolivia without seeing any borders. Careful with the loose sand, which might get you stuck if you're not an experienced driver. However, go there because it's really beautiful!
