Warkworth Castle has a long history as one of the major fortresses in Northumberland, a county which was so key in the warfare between England and Scotland. Much of the history of Warkworth is associated with the local Percy family, the Earls (now Dukes) of Northumberland. Their history is woven around their two fortifications of Warkworth and Alnwick, with lots... More

We used to live 30 mins from this area and took it for granted. As we now as we live in London, we aim to visit our home county 'Northumberland' which I'm very proud of coming from. The Castle is impressive and sits proudly on the top of the hill. You have the lovely riverside for walking, coffee shops, bars... More

The view of Warkworth Castle on the approach is spectacular and the views from the castle over the village of Warkworth and across to Amble and the North Sea are beautiful too. The audio guide was brilliant - not too long and really brought the castle 'alive'. Even though it is mainly a ruin, the castle felt surprisingly homely. We... More

Great old castle, lovely views and a good audio tour. Id advise trying to join it with a visit to the Hermitage about 15-20 mins walk away and a tiny boat ride on the river. Might close in Nov though. Highly recommended. Wrap up warm though its all outdoor and on a hill so breezy!

Walkworth for me is still my favourite Castle, it dominates the skyline, The Keep is intact and a great place to explore, bring a picnic, and take a stroll along the river, if you have kids they will love this castle

If you are in the area a visit to Warkworth Castle is worth a couple of hours of your time. Parking is on site and costs £3.10 which is refunded when you pay for an entrance ticket. The lady in the ticket office is very helpful and gave us a warming sip of honey mead when we arrived. There is... More

We stayed in Warkworth so couldn't miss a trip to the castle, especially as it was dog friendly. The Audi guided tour was excellent but be aware the handsets seem to go very quickly and take half an hour to charge, so people arriving as we left were unable to access one. A beautiful castle well maintained by English Heritage.

Obviously after all the years the castle is not how it was when built but it is in great condition to help bring the past to life. Can easily spend minimum of 1-2 hours. In addition some excellent sea views and views of the river Coquet. Can be a part of a day taking in the beach and the town... More

For a small village, this is a vast castle. It belonged to the Duke of Northumberland who decamped to it when Alnwick was threatened and actually has two Great Halls.
