    Brilliant loved it.
Lovely fun trip for Halloween half term. Well organised, friendly fun filled trip on a steam train. Staff really friendly and the right amount of scary fun. Magician really entertaining too. Highly recommend! Looking forward to booking the Christmas train!

    So so so much fun
I went this past Friday and they had their Halloween Ghost Train experience. As a child trapped in an adults body, I had so much fun. Not just the ride on the steam train, but the volunteers dressed up, the music and the wonderful scenery. Highly recommend this even on a normal non themed day.

    The Amazing Lights Express
We went on The Lights Express. What a wonderful experience. It was so well decorated, inside and out, which made it so festive. The commentary, and DJ were excellent, and with the music and wristbands, that flashed along with the train lights, it was amazing. Certainly worth going on

    Very Good
An incredibly marvellous experience! Santa, accompanied by various characters, provided my family and I with a delightfully heart warming experience throughout our journey. Scrooge was particularly impressive, embodying different interpretations seen in films. My granddaughter, initially reserved and uninvolved with the characters, underwent a delightful change of attitude in the presence of Buddy the elf. Her face lit up, and she was laughing for the first time on the train ride, making it a truly special moment. Despite the chilly and damp weather, the interior of the train remained sufficiently heated and workers around the platform were very helpful and not at all condescending when we asked for help. I would certainly recommend this experience and look forward to returning next year.

    Family train ride
Had an amazing time last Sunday evening. Twelve of us went and everyone raved about it afterwards. Even hard to please 12 year olds! Thoroughly recommend the train to anyone. It was so beautifully decorated.. So many of these things can be ruined by chaotic and disorganised staff who forget what the whole thing is about and get frustrated with customers when things go wrong , but not here! It was well organised and the “guards “ were friendly and well into the spirit of Xmas.. I would love to have seen this train travelling through Epping from a bridge or garden. It must have been such a lovely sight

    Wonderful experience
Due to traffic and getting lost I missed the train and my family boarded without me. I got to Ongar and boarded the Santa bus which I was told wasn’t due to leave for about another hour. I explained it didn’t matter as I had missed the train anyway. These wonderful people said no problem and took me to Ongar station, sat me in a waiting room with a blazing fire where two volunteers made me a cup of tea and then filled me in on the history of the steam trains, stations and Ongar history until the train arrived and I could board it to be with my family ( who were very surprised to see me ) When we arrived back in North Weald I missed the Ongar bus but once again I was taken back on the bus to my car even though it was not due to leave for a very long time. The customer service I was given was exceptional and I’m so grateful how kindly I was treated. I believe the gentlemen that helped me are the owners. It’s so nice to know there are such lovely caring people out there. Thank you so much for the train experience and human kindness

    Excellent and kind staff
I cannot speak highly enough of the EOR. I took my disabled father today and the very kind, attentive and excellent staff and volunteers made it a wonderful experience. Quite simply they could not do enough to make his experience a joyful one.

    A Good Day Out
A very enjoyable day out. Access easy from Epping station via vintage bus. Your ticket gives you all day access allowing you to travel up and down the line as you please. The journey is, in effect, split into two. North Weald to Ongar and return and North Weald to Epping Forest and return. That does mean you have a bit of a wait at North Weald for the second part of the journey. Catering facilities are at both North Weald and Ongar, the main one being at North Weald. Likewise for gift shops. Catering more than adequate and reasonably priced. No indoor cover though so it would be less fun in a cold day. Both gift shops somewhat limited in size and range of stock. More items specific to the line would have been nice. The journey is predominantly through open countryside and provides a relaxed atmosphere. Would thoroughly recommend.

    Afternoon tea in beautiful setting
Afternoon cream tea my husband and I had an afternoon cream tea given to us as a birthday present it was the first one that they had done.We first had a vintage bus ride to the railway on arrival we got on the train went for a ride on the steam train. The staff were all friendly and very professional. On the train we were given scones jam cream and asked whether we would like tea or coffee nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We were then offered various cake options. On our journey we were offered more cream jam drinks and fruit had an amazing time looked after amazingly felt like royalty.we would highly recommend the experience. Considering it was the first time for the staff you wouldn't have known .At the end we were take on a return journey on the vintage bus .A great day and will definitely be back .Thankyou to everyone .

Great just need a bit more organisation
Myself and my 2 year old son visited for the first time for the Bluey event. He LOVED it. Everything is great so amazing to see the vintage train bus and station. Even the staff are dressed vintage. We had a great breakdown of the day, facilities and things to see. And the little ones were given bluey colouring sheet and crayons!! Thought it was a brilliant day. There were tables on the train which was great to have lunch plus picnic tables at the station for lunch time. The only negative was at time there was a bit of disorganisation. We ques waiting to get on a bus for 20 mins while 3 drivers sat inside. After someone asking we were told that bus wasn’t going anywhere for an hour and half. We had to wait a total of 40 mins for the return bus to Epping which isn’t great with the children. So lots of tears and tantrums. Apart from that great and looking at Christmas trains!

Very sad to say my recent trip to the Epping Ongar railway for this half term was a huge disappointment.
The journey itself was nice and I very much enjoyed the steam train experience, however I chose this experience based on the websites listed safety measures.
It stated clearly that at all times when in the open compartment, passengers must wear their masks. Unfortunately this was not monitored at all on our journey by the staff and we witnessed 3 adults with a group of children all take off their masks to chat better, leaving their children to run amuck around the carridge.
We also discovered that only one window was open when we boarded the train (despite the website stating windows would need to remain open to allow optimum ventilation). It was a cold day and there was rain but that only makes the lack of ventilation worse with a carridge full of people not adhering to guidelines.

Further to this at the station itself, no passengers were maintaining social distancing and there was no attempt by staff at all to make clear the guidance on social distancing. Very disappointed, had the website not made such an effort to express all the ways it would be covid safe, I wouldn't have considered this trip during these current times. Very misleading.

Well arrived and train wasn't lit which was poor because when a grans switch on occurred you were so close to the train you couldn't see them.
I am sat on the train now and hot is an understatement 0 degrees outside and we are melting it is uncomfortably hot.

Well you are taken up the tracks slowly in places where there a re a few illuminated deers and elves, very poor and cheaply done considering it has cost 110 pounds for the family. The illuminated animals are also on the wrong side of the train which makes them more difficult to see.

The train stops for about five minutes with nothing to look at before you are pushed back the other way in the sweat box to see it all again.

Overall very poor and iver priced, even the children were borred after five minutes.

We listen to all comments and use them to review our services. I am of course sorry that you didn't enjoy the much and light show that we put on for the first time this year. The show involves an illuminated train, lineside displays and lights which create a wonderful effect when shone onto the trees and other areas adjacent to our railway. Also on board is a musical selection and narration to accompany the light show. I will look into the heating issue - it does seem that we might have had it on too high but given that you explained it was freezing outside I assume we wanted to be sure that people were warm enough and could have opened the windows for ventilation. Booked the ghost train with a friend for our two 4 year olds leading up to Halloween, we was all very excited so was really let down to find the experience boring and disappointing. 5 minutes after leaving north weald Station the engine broke and we was stuck on the train for an hour, we then got taken back to North weald so they could change the engine, once the engine was changed we then started again with our journey to ongar. We arrived at ongar looking forward to the storytelling, refreshments, etc but when we got off the train we was told the cafe was shut and they couldn't find the storyteller so we had to get straight back on the train, the staff were not apologetic. We then went back to North weald and was told we didnt have time for refreshments we had to get straight on the 2nd fright train. My friend and her 4 year old were desperate for the toilet after our long delay, so I qued up why they went to the toilet. The train staff told me I had to get on the train but I asked if there was enough spaces for another 2 as they would be here shortly, the staff member was very rude and told me to just get on the train and why were the other people not queuing up with me. The whole experience was disappointing. The staff are rude and could definitely do with training or replacing. Complete waste of money as we did not get the experience described on there website.

Our steam engine failed yesterday afternoon leading to an unavoidable 1 hour delay whilst we got two other locomotives out to rescue the train. I was there as the Duty Operations Manager and was very impressed by the efficiency with which our trained volunteers carried out this complicated process, and moreover I was on the train with the guard and others ensuring that the passengers were kept up to date with what was going on. The description of the volunteers is clearly not shared by others as just today I received a card from a passenger who write that she "couldn't praise you all too much". You are right that our trains don't have toilets - if we used the ones on the train then we would find human waste on our tracks and for what was expected to be a journey of 15 minutes to Ongar we think that is not acceptable. I am sorry that you didn't find the time to get something to eat before the Forest Train - this train does 2 trips at about 15 minute intervals so there would have been enough time for you to get something to eat. A passenger information leaflet provided at the Booking Office explains "The train will make two trips to the Forest so if you don’t get on the first trip you will get on the second one – we ask you to be patient if need to wait." The website is also clear on this point : “For capacity reasons, passengers for this element of the experience will be split into two groups…You may have to wait upto 30 minutes at North Weird before boarding this train.” We will redouble our efforts to ensure that staff and passengers are aware of the arrangements. Before replying to this review I have checked and the website makes no mention of a storyteller, this was a late addition to the schedule provided as an extra, so it is unreasonable for you to suggest that it's not as described on the website. We read all reviews on Trip Advisor and other sites and use these to improve the experience that our passengers receive – thank you for taking the time to let us know about yours.

We were looking forward to this Bluey Character experience going along with our family including a toddler and one year old baby. This was really spoilt by the total misinformation both before our trip and once we arrived. We originally booked a certain time but were informed this had been cancelled and we were put onto an earlier train which was a bit inconvenient but I understand problems can occur. We then booked the 1.20 train and were under the impression that this was the time of the train to leave. The information said to arrive 30 mins earlier to meet the character. We duly did this and were told by a member of staff to make our way to Platform One straight away. We stood there in the heat for about 1.1/2 hours as apparently the train was not due to leave until 1.50 and then it was also delayed by about 20 minutes too. Had we been informed of this when we booked in at the office we could have gone to have a sit down and a cup of tea to pass the time. As it was we ended up with two very bored, hot and hungry children which spoilt our day. When the Bluey character did arrive it was just one character who spent less than one minute with each person to get a photo and even then other people were standing in the way of us trying to get a photo and the staff didn’t help organise it. When the train journey did start, we were hardly on the journey 20 minutes when it stopped again at Ongar for 30 minutes and the journey back was approximately 20 minutes so all in all the day was a complete rip off. It was also advertised that there would be a magician onboard keeping everyone entertained but all he did was one small trick and moved onto the next carriage. It also stated that there would be a person modelling balloons but again these were very expensive to buy. The staff at the station all seemed to be very unhelpful and unsure what was going on. The only good thing was the members of staff on board the train were very nice and friendly. When I did complain to the company I was given the reply that the information about the timings was sent to me but I rechecked two or three times and the information they said they had given me was definitely not included with my tickets. I told them that other people had been under the same impression as me but they said that they could not have read their information included with the ticket either! The best part of the day was the heritage bus trip which took us from Epping Station to North Weald Station. I would not recommend this trip and wouldn’t return.

We started our visit at Ongar (19.02.2020) and from the moment we arrived we were greeted with a warm smile and a friendly face by the door. We then proceeded to wait when another lovely lovely gentleman approached me and my 4 year old and asked if we had visited the signal box he then walked us over and told us all about the future plans for expanding the railway, the history behind it and future renovations. The gentleman went ABOVE and BEYOND and made us feel very looked after. The gentleman in the signal box was also very lovely and told us all about his job. My son loved the experience. It was a great day out for the whole family but most of all every single member of staff we came across from the gift shop(north weald) to the ticket offices or staff at the platforms they were all extremely helpful and welcoming. Thank you for the exceptional customer service and job well done!!

Visited recently for the 10th Anniversary Gala and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

The railway is pretty easy to get to - I travelled from Central London on the Central Line to Epping and from there caught the excellent heritage bus service which is included in the ticket price.

One of the steam locos they had planned to use had unfortunately failed but this was communicated that morning and was substituted for a diesel which was no problem.

An excellent range of locos on offer which provided plenty of photo opportunities and a few good rides up and down the line.
The stations are also excellent and it's hard to believe this line used to be part of the Underground/tube network.

The weather turned out great and although the first train of the day from North Weald was delayed, it didn't put a dampener on proceedings.

Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable day on a cracking railway. I'll be visiting again.

Attended the beer festival last Saturday when it was raining. The selection of beers was very good but the beer tent was far too small to hold everyone given the weather and small shelter erected next to the tent was also far too small and very flimsy!!
In addition there was nowhere to sit!
Having prebooked our tickets we were then made to queue up in the rain to access the booking office to obtain a ticket in order to board the trains - ridiculous given the weather and no flexibility from the staff - presume volunteers so hardly jobsworths!!
Toilets were locked on the trains so given that they were serving beer on the train this seems a bit silly!!
To top it all when I took my £3 festival glass home and put it in the dish washer all the printing came off the glass!!
Don't think we will be going again!

After reading some of the negative reviews I was a bit worried about taking our two grandcildren (11 and 6) on the illuminated train ride but I shouldn't have, we had a brilliant time. We arrived a little early and had no trouble at all parking, lots of people guiding us in. We had brought our own picnic with us but you could get drinks and mulled wine from the bar where you pick up snacks if ordered. It was handled so well and the kids loved the steam train arriving, just like Harry Potter! The lights on the train were lovely and you get a great view when walking over the footbridge, everyone was taking pictures. The steps wern't slippy at all. We were in Mistletoe carriage and had four seats and a table, the atmosphere was so lovely and friendly, most people had brought their own food and there were loads of children. We couldn't really hear the tannoy because the kids were all laughing and giggling which was a bit of a shame as the bits we heard were good. It was lovely and warm but we turned the heating down and opened a window on the way back as it did get a bit hot. We had no trouble getting out of the car park, only took about 5 minutes as it was very well organised. No, its not Disney standard but we wern't expecting that. It was a great way to start Christmas, the children loved it and I have been told they want to go again next year. Thank you to all the lovely volunteers who made it a great evening.

Finding the bus to get to North Weald for Santa special train wasn't easy. Bus arrived and had a slow journey due to road works, this meant that once we arrived really we needed to go straight to the platform to be ready to have photos taken with Santa and his team (so we missed out) and go to the correct area for our train carriage. Announcements were apparently being given out, but we could not hear them due to crowds of people some coming off the train previously.
However it was 12.30pm and we needed lunch and loo beforehand as no toilet on the train. So we queued for lunch and then toilet and took our lunch on to the platform where we had to push our way past most people to arrive at our carriage area. Spruce at the very end.

However after this difficult start all went very well. The different characters did well and that bit went off great and our granddaughter really enjoyed it. As we arrived at Ongar station a lady came into our carriage and announced times etc. We and many others couldn't hear, so I went up to her and asked and she told us times etc in a louder voice for others to hear also. Time for a loo stop and drink to be brought back onto the train. Father Christmas came along while train heading back to North Weald. Present was very good and suitable and our granddaughter was addressed by her name, which was lovely.
We got many photos too.
Arrival back in North Weald we could use toilets and visit gift shop before we got on the bus. We were slightly concerned about timings of catching the bus back, but it worked out okay.
So mostly the day was really good, despite the very cold weather. Train was heated sufficiently.

Would not be going again, was a one off.
Poor parking management - traffic marshals wearing black high vis and no hand held lights so be careful not to run them over! A nightmare to get out at the end as well, no one way system so carnage.
Unable to find the men's toilets so I ended up escorting them into the females which is unisex anyway.
No one checked our tickets so you could turn up for free. And no guidance on how to find our seats so allow some extra time.
Refreshments over priced with a minimum spend of £9 so cannot even get a hot chocolate.
The train carriage is very very warm!! And some of the windows do not open so be prepared to sit in a sweat box for an hour.
Very minimal lights for the price paid, the advertising video is misleading
