It may be difficult to visit it because it is mostly closed to the public though one may eventually be able to visit it when there is either a mess or some sort of religious ceremony. One should pay particular attention to the tomb stones...More

Make sure you have a guide to explain the history. Nice old church. We only looked in because there was a wedding.

Just off Rua da Banana, this church was the first structure built in Cabo Verde by the slaves who were brought here, although typically not one they were allowed to use themselves. It's still in use today, but the lady with the key will open...More

Being a member of the Knights of Columbus it was an honor to be able to visit Our Lady of the Rosary Church, a church visited by Columbus before his third voyage to the New World.

We visited this during a half day trip to Ciudade velha. This is an important church visited by columbus and Vasco da Gama. Luckily someone came to open the door for us. Interesting gravestones inside. Well worth a visit.

Stroll to the end of Banana Street and come upon a gorgeous flowering tree shading the entrance of this church from antiquity. This church is still packed on Sundays and is a must see when visiting the old city and Cape Verde in general.

There was a service in progress and we were only able to have a quick look inside. It is remarkable that this church is still functioning over 500 years after it was built. It had a typically simple and light décor on the interior.

Arrived here mid-day on a Saturday and we were quite disappointed to find it closed to visitors. Front door was locked. A historically-significant church, but not particularly attractive and not in a great state of preservation. Of course, being the oldest existing building in Ribeira...More

This church was built in the late 1400s and is significant as the oldest colonial church in the world. It is a very small cathedral and we could only see the outside since the entrance was locked. The church is located in the "old city"...More
