Stroll to the end of Banana Street and come upon a gorgeous flowering tree shading the entrance of this church from antiquity. This church is still packed on Sundays and is a must see when visiting the old city and Cape Verde in general.

There was a service in progress and we were only able to have a quick look inside. It is remarkable that this church is still functioning over 500 years after it was built. It had a typically simple and light décor on the interior.

Arrived here mid-day on a Saturday and we were quite disappointed to find it closed to visitors. Front door was locked. A historically-significant church, but not particularly attractive and not in a great state of preservation. Of course, being the oldest existing building in Ribeira Grande, you can't expect it to be in perfect condition. Easy to find by following... More

This church was built in the late 1400s and is significant as the oldest colonial church in the world. It is a very small cathedral and we could only see the outside since the entrance was locked.
