This area has very significant historical information on the history of the Jewish people who were first shipwrecked here 2000 years ago. I was impressed with the upkeep of the local synagogues as well as speaking to the local people who practise here.

This synagogue in alibaug is an unusual thing to do here. It is closed most days so u have to call before u go. It represents a heritage and history. Must visit if u love history.

Judaism literally crashed onto India’s western coast at Navagaon (close to Alibaug) when the Bene Israel (Sons of Israel, who are believe to be descendants of one of the disputed Lost Tribes) were shipwrecked around 175 B.C. fleeing persecution in Galilee. Only seven couples survived...More
