About
According to myth, Zeus was born in this remote cave on the slopes of Mount Ida in Crete. Even if you're not a fan of Greek mythology, you'll enjoy exploring this stalagmite and stalactite-filled cavern and taking in the stunning views of the surrounding valley at the top. The hike up to the cave is manageable, but steep; if you're with young kids, consider getting a donkey ride to the top. There's a fee to enter the cave, which is usually covered if you sign up for a day tour of the area. It often includes a stop at the cave and Lassithi Plateau, and even offers a 4x4 offroad tour option for the more adventurous.

    Disappointed
Very steep slippy path leads you to start of cave entrance. Lack of lights on the steps in / out of cave . Disappointed: also the use of donkeys on the steep rough paths . If you don’t think you can make it to cave don’t go : not fair to the poor donkeys to carry adults .

Big climb , hot day , fabulous pictures
Well worth the slog up there and then down the steps inside. Well worth it . It's just staggeringly beautiful inside . Thank you ladies for walking up there every day and selling tickets and collecting tickets . A lovely trip.

    Very Cool Cave
We visited the Zeus Cave during a tour and it was really amazing. It costs 6 EUR per person to enter the cave and you can pay 10 EUR for a donkey to take you up the top. Otherwise it’s a 15-20 minute steep uphill walk to the top of the cave. The walk up is mostly paved, except for the last 2-3 minutes, where it’s mostly rocky. You then climb about 100 steps down to the cave with the most amazing stalagmites and stalactites. There is a small shop at the top of the hill where you can buy beverages, which is a huge help cause during the summer months it’s a pretty steep hike up. We’re not particularly in shape, and we made it just fine. However, I would highly recommend wearing shoes with good grip, as some of the path can get slippery.

Brilliant cave - Compact visit: Min. 1 hour required
Two paths up from the car park, a new one and an old one. Suggest going up the new path (better paving) and coming down the old. Terrific cave well worth a visit. Metal steps zig-zag you to the bottom and back out again. Times: 15 minute walk up to cave, 30 mins in the cave, 15 mins walk down again. Cafes and parking at the bottom. A beautiful classical place. Worthy of a legend or two.

    Cool Cave
We arrived at midday on a weekday in mid-May. The car parking was almost full, Eur4 was the cost. A 10-15 minute hike up a fairly steep path was fine until the last few hundred yards which were rocky and occasionally slippery. The cave cost Eur6 each to enter and has a one-way system around. It is nice and cool inside the cave and the path can be a bit slippery in places. The stalactites and stalagmites were impressive and we were able to dawdle and take photos without too many people in as it wasn't too busy. I think in peak season it will be considerably congested. We were in the cave just under 20 minutes and the queue going in at 12.40pm was quite long. Overall it is definitely worth a visit.

    Over in 10 minutes.
Went as part of a bigger tour. I really don't think the cave was worth it. A good 20m home up to the cave, with the last stretch being quite rocky and slippery. It's very much in and out in the cave. You have to really watch your footing whilst traversing the 200 odd steps. Some of the handrails were quite shaky as well. The cave is very small. Impressive enough but over in 5/10 minutes. The tour guide told us about the name of the cave. If it is not part of a tour, don't bother.

Brace yourself- this is a nice steep walk up, but the views are phenomenal. The caves have a beautiful feel and just embrace all the senses in there. It is a real way to embrace natural beauty (Take a drink, sun cream up)

Steep climb, nice cave, better legend
Access is via a steep steady path with an incline of 25-30 degrees. It will take about 20 minutes up, and I suggest you carry water on a hot day. The last 50m is quite rough. The cave has steep and irregular steps going down and of course they are steep coming up. The attraction of the cave for me was the myth and legend. As a cave, there are many more in the world that have far more spectacular formations. Most surfaces have a green tinge due to the constant light allowing moss formation. The view across the Lasithi plateau was spectacular. There is a small cafe outside the cave for refreshments. Tickets are bought at the top of the walk

Do it! You will not regret it!
Our family was on the eastern side of Crete after a tour and had to drive back to our hotel. While having lunch we realized we had some time to fill and wanted something easy that was not a tour. I read the reviews and almost did not go due to them! DO NOT LISTEN TO THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS! The drive in from the highway is curvy (to say the least) but the views of the mountains, small villages, and then the valley once you are over the mountain have been my favorite in all of Crete! The parking lot is very large, with a lot of friendly vendors. One vendor made sure to point out the "easy" path up to the cave (after our hike up we went back to him and bought ice cream - we earned it). The path is mostly flat stone but at a steep incline. My husband wanted me to ride the donkey as I was traveling on a broken foot, but in the end, I won out and made the hike up and back without assistance (other than a cane). At the very top, for a short period, there are small irregular stones that are smoothed to the point of being slick. This area was the most difficult and I had no problem. Just take your time and choose your steps wisely. It took less than 2 minutes to traverse them. Going down felt a bit less secure, but again, good shoes and caution made it completely safe. The cave itself was incredible. The cool air was a welcomed relief from the heat outside. The stairs down were well spaced with a handrail the entire way. We took our time and enjoyed seeing the cave and I'm so grateful I gave it a try!

    Quite a trek, come prepared
The hike to get up the mountain and steps going in and out of the caves is a long uphill climb and physically demanding. It is advised that you wear trainers or other flat shoes that fit well and support your feet. Some sections of the trek are over uneven rocks. There is a cafe near the caves where you can get refreshments and use a toilet, there is also a donkey service where you can pay and go halfway up assisted. The caves were pretty and also quite cool, the steps getting out of the caves tested our fitness.

We went to Lassithi plateau for walking around and visiting some places.
We arrived early morning (suggested time to not find many tourists).
You need to walk up for 15/20mins to get there.
Tickets are a bit expensive, about 6€/person, for the small visit (about 15mins).
The view from the top was amazing!

After visiting Melidoni cave I was underwhelmed by this cave. It's relatively large and has a lot of steep steps to get down inside, but it feels like they haven't made the most of it. A few comments say the hike up and views are worth it, which definitely is the case, but you could do that and not enter the cave. One important thing of note is if you have an EU passport it's cheaper, I think we paid 6e for adults and children were free. So at that price you have to pay and support the upkeep. Parking in the village is organised by the locals and is 2.50e per car. We also ate at a nice Taverna (Petros) which had amazing views over the plateau and the owner did freshly squeezed juices.

The cave is impressive, but not too big. After parking the car you have to do a 15-minute walk uphill. During high season expect a lot of people, there are queues to get in. Entrance fee is 6€, toilet is extra paid 0.50€
Very nice views along the way

An arduous climb but worth it. We had several different versions of how long/difficult the climb was and they varied between 5 minutes jaunt and a Himalyan escapade. The reality was in between - an arduous but doable walk up for about 45 minutes with breaks and 200+ steps down and up the cave itself. Walking down was no problem.
The cave was very intriguing and beautiful. Well worth the exertion. Admittedly it was December so cool - maybe a different animal in the summer heat and crowds.

I was not expecting such a hike. I am almost 60, and the paved pathway gives way to a rocky climb. When you finally get there, another 200 steps down into the cave- that you have to climb up. The donkeys at the bottom should have alerted me that there was going to be a big climb. The cave itself is very modest- I have been to much nicer stalagmite caves in many other places. It also is not maintained well and many of the structures are damaged.

Absolute rip off. Pay to park then a long walk uphill via a paved walkway uphill, the walkway stops and the trail becomes rather dangerous with rocks and old tree stumps on the way to buy a ticket. Very crowded, no coloured lights on as shown in all advertising. Rusty, wet dangerous handrails. Very disappointing. I would not venture here again but would gladly revisit Melidoni Cave

The journey up to the cave isn’t so bad, although it is very tedious. I would definitely recommend trainers as sandals might prove difficult to climb up a steep hill in, the drive to the cave was absolutely beautiful and the views are certainly breathtaking!

The reason for my rating is purely on the fact they have donkeys and horses to climb lazy folk up and down as they see it as a novelty. I have a joint condition and I certainly would not use a donkey or horse to carry me up the hills if I couldn’t carry myself, I think if it’s a issue for you, don’t bother going.

to see extremely overweight people using these poor donkeys and horses to carry them up is pure animal abuse and to top it off they get on with there children/partner too, so that’s 3 bodies on one malnourished horse/donkey.

There’s no excuse for laziness, if they wouldn’t carry there own children up this steep hill in blaring sun, I don’t understand why it’s acceptable for the animals to do it?

For the cave itself, it is very beautiful but ends in about 10 mins, no information posts or anything, I’m really not one to moan but to see these poor horses/donkeys track up and down 100 times a day just doesn’t sit right with me, if you cannot bare your own weight on your legs, don’t expect a donkey to.

Hire a car, head off into the Dikti mountains and enjoy the adventure - be prepared for stunning views, hair-pin bends a-plenty, eagles, vultures, goats in trees and much more. Take your time, plenty of water and fuel. When you reach Lasithi Plateau take time to appreciate what lies before you. Watch out for the swallows on the roads, they play ‘Chicken’ better than chickens!

When you arrive, Psychro Cave is so very much worth the walk. Get there early, by 09:00 to avoid human traffic. Look out for nesting raptors above the cave entrance. The decent is manageable, cooling quickly as you go. Steps can be quite moist in places, so best wear sensible footwear. Formations are stunning and sensitively illuminated.

The cafe atop the rise is a welcome stop before descending back to the carpark and the WC is most convenient!

Definitely worth a visit if Greek mythology interests you. The cave is very mysterious and fascinating. There is a steep walk up but you are greeted at the top by a lovely stall selling cold drinks at reasonable prices, even freshly squeezed orange juice. The only negative is seeing the poor donkeys lugging grown adults up and down the hill, looking very hot and tired. I know it is the livelihood of the local people and that also some people may not be able to do the walk themselves, but it was still unpleasant to see the animals in discomfort.
