What an amazing hiking experience. Beautiful nature, spectacular views and a top crew. Our guide Gismu was aware of what a Western tourist needs and at the same time he was knowledgeable about the fauna, flora, local culture and history. An eye for detail, like dinner by candlelight, campfire and a chef who made an effort to cook deliciously fresh and varied food!
Thanks again to all of the crew for this journey. Love Ethiopia!

I had an excellent time trekking the Simien mountains with our tour guide Gismu. We spent a full day trekking, saw baboons up close, learned about the mountain and town's history. Gismu was a great tour guide and I would recommend him to anyone, he spoke great english, was knowledgeable on the history of the Mountain and helped take photos for the memories. We had an excellent trek and Gismu's company. All the staff worked incredibly hard for us for four days (chefs, guide, tent makers, mule men, scouts), which made the trip safe, comfortable and challenging. The breakfast and evening food were particularly good. I would recommend Gismu.

We had a brilliant time with Gismu. He's very quick to reply on Whatsapp, has a great chef and guide who took us for three nights. It was a very well planned and paced trek, the equipment was clean and in good condition, the food was excellent and nice touches like a table laid out with snacks, drinks and hot water to wash with when you arrive at the end of each day. My mother and I went for our trek with Gismu's company (+251 93 548 0330). The staff that accompanied us was really good, especially the scout. The Simien Mountains are among the most amazing places on the planet, and you can enjoy almost perfect silence. The views are breathtaking, and it is an experience you should not miss.

Gismu was helpful, and picked us up from the airport, dropping us to our Airbnb, and then from our Airbnb to the National Park, all included in a reasonable fee for the entire trek.

Gismu was very good with communication and I was very impressed with how well he organized my whole trip to the Simien Mountains. Without asking, he picked my partner and I up from the airport. We settled into the nice AG Gondar hotel. The next day he was very prompt at 8 am to bring up to the Simien National park. He handled all the registration and fees. I requested a sim card for myself and my partner. He had a friend in Debark buy a sim card for me on route. Not only did this save time in my busy trip to buy one myself as it was pre-purchased, it was super quick to install. The store had to cut the sim card as they don't sell nano cards. After getting the sim cards, we stopped at approximately simien lodge and hiked to Sankabar camp. it took approximately 4 hours. Views were amazing. Sankabar has a beautiful place to watch the Sunset. Also, if you can find where the trail leads to Jinbar falls just 5 minutes from the camp you can have another great view. It was end of December when we went. It gets cold at night, like 40 F and i hear colder even higher up. I will next time bring a wool sweater and wool pants at minimum to sleep. I had a light jacket on underneath my sleeping bag and normal light hiking pants with socks on and still felt cold.

The second day we went from Sankabar camp to Jinbar water falls. It was an easy 2 hours. As the day was getting late and we had to catch a flight at 7:30 pm. We left the trail and we drove and found the Gelada monkeys. It was an amazing experience to walk among the monkeys and be almost within touching distance. Afterwards we drove and got a late lunch and went to the airport. We made a quick stop close to Gondar to fly my drone at an amazing scenic spot similar to the Simien mountains. I would recommend to anyone if you want to fly a drone be sure to ask Gismu to buy a permitfor you as it's definitely worth it. (next time i will for sure). Also, these tours include a mandatory scout. Though previously there were problems with the locals being intruded on by tourists or war, these scouts exist now to help the local economy. I tipped our scout after 2 days 100 birr but this seemed not enough. In other places this was good enough so I'm not sure quite the going rate for tipping, which seems to not be mandatory but very highly expected. Also for anyone planning to go, try to clarify your itinerary as much as possible. I thought the first day we would see Jinbar waterfall and the second day see Imet Gogo. unfortunately this did not happen. But i believe it would have been possible. Most of the hiking in simien national park follows a cliff edge which has a road running parallel to it only about 5-10 minute hiking distance from it. It would have been very easy to drive up closer to Jinbar. I was reading one can drive and stop at Ayna Meda, which is a scout outpost located between Sankabar and Chennek on the main road. From there i read the loop trail is 3-4 hours.

Overall I had a very good experience with Gismu.+251 93 548 0330 on whatsapp. He is very responsive. I did send a deposit of $130 to reserve the trip and paid extra to sleep outside. It's quite amazing sleeping under the stars and I took very nice astrophotography pictures. I talked to other people who said their tours seems more unorganized and required multiple stops of many people on route. Since we only picked up one more person it felt like the trip went very smoothly. Everythings was ready for us along each step and our tents were already made for us when we arrived at Sankabar cam

We did a 4-day, 3-night hiking tour in the Simien Mountains. Views and nature are amazing, the trails are not super hard and the camps are basic but ok.
We arranged everything through Gismu (gismudebark@yahoo.com) and it worked well. He arranged for us transport from and back to Gondar, camping and cooking gear, guide, scout and mule and cooks. All very reliable.
Our guide, Alex, was great, experienced, super kind, fun, and very knowledgeable about the mountains, animals and plants. (Tel: 0939716541)
The cooks were really good and prepared for us warm dinners every night including super tasty soups and veggies.
This was a one of the best hikes we did, just be aware it gets very cold at nights, bring layers and a good sleeping bag.

We met Gismu by chance in the office of Simien National Park in Debark, and immediately I trusted and hired him for a day excursion in Simien National Park. And the decision couldn’t be better.

Gismu is a soft and clever person, who was born on one the villages located inside the park, and so he has a very deep knowledge of the flora, fauna and places to be found inside the park. He took us to the good places to see Walias and Gelada baboons, as well to the waterfalls.

Our excursion was rather short, as it was during rainy season, but long enough to be sure that if I ever go back, or if I have to recommend a guide to a friend, I would for sure hire him once again. Besides, Gismu runs his own little agency, which can also arrange tours around the park and Gondar, and organize some long and serious treks in the park.

If you ever travel to Ethiopia, don´t miss a visit to this amazing national park, and look for Gismu as your guide!

We travelled for 3 days in the Simien Mountains, and the scenery and wildlife were absolutely fantastic.
Our guide was Gismu Syum, running the company Ethiopia Trek, and who we thought was a very good guide (flexible regarding our demands, responds very quickly to emails during preparations, and good company and wildlife knowledge during the trek). Even though we do not think it is necessary to have such a big team (mulemen, cooks, ranger) just for the two tourists that we were, we thought the team assembled by Gismu was very good at what they were doing.
One thing the park will need to address, according to us, is the noise at the campsites (we were told this is already a matter of discussion among them, so let's cross our fingers). A few examples include some guides and cooks (this concerns only some of them, not all) shouting just meters from the tents when almost every tourist has gone to sleep after a long day of walking, or tourist who feel they "have the right" to use the full potential of their portable speakers just next to the tents in the middle of a national park because "they have paid" (I am quoting a discussion also held after almost everyone had gone to sleep).
