Lovely walk looking at old edo houses and forests and mini waterfalls. Spotted some sakura trees near the tea house! As it was drizzling, it took us about 4 hours from Magome to Tsumago, then a bus back to Magome for the night.

Was just ok. Didn’t see good restaurants or interesting things much. There were lots of tourists. The view at the top was nice.

Went as day trip from Kiso Fukasyima. Hired car ( 9000 Yen) and drove to Magome. Then walk up for about 45 min to top of pass following old postal route on lovely track through the forest. Even though was dull weather and drizzle was well worth doing. Can get a bus back from Tsumago but local taxi there was great , 2000 Yen. Lovely old villages best explored on foot.

very cute town in the mountains, departure for the nakasendo trail. Traditional vibe, perfect for a change from more modern locations like bug cities. very nice place to rest for a few days.

My wife and I had a private guide that met us at the hotel and did about an 11 KM walk starting from Magome. Very lovely old Japanese villages along the way and a nice and gentle experience of the Nakasendo trail which links Kyoto to Tokyo.

Absolutely stunning walk. Took a couple of hours. Unforgettable! Bus access was a little tricky but we made it work. We drove in to Magome and did the walk and caught the bus back from Tsumago. Not many buses and it looks like the end just before 5pm, so plan the time well. Safer to walk from the morning. There are nice places to eat in both Tsumago and Magome. The walk wasn't too difficult but you'd need to be pretty comfortable with walking.

I went with the tour company Walk Japan on a 10 day walk along the Nakasendo Trail. We stayed in lovely inns with delicious multi-course meals, relaxing baths, and comfortable futon beds. The only complaint was that the weather was unseasonably cold at the time and we even got snowed on. But it was a fantastic experience! Not for people who don’t want to share a bathroom though.

Great stretch of the trail to walk, steep in places, if you make the return trip about 9 miles but plenty of resting places. Enjoyable day!
