This is an unmanned site next to the sea that you are free to wander through at your own pace. There is not much to tell you where you can wander so try to pick up one of the excellent pamphlets at Port Arthur or...More

Had the site to ourselves only wish we had more time to explore all the ruins. The military area is just behind the car park and is very interesting especially the underground cells.

I am so pleased that we got out of the car and went for a walk around this site. It was fantastic. The paths were accessible on the 30 minute loop to the ruins on the edge of the bay. The isolation cells underground were...More

We decided to spend a few hours hiking around the site of the Historical Coal Mine. It is an amazing location for a coal mine being perched on a cliff with fantastic ocean views. There are lots of interesting historical facts to read about the...More

It was not a place that I had heard of before and it is out of the way but well worth a visit. Anticipate a good walk if you want to see the various parts of the site which include various ruins (prison and officers...More

An evocative place walking around the ruins, finding quite a bit of coal discarded on the beaches and the down track from the mine to the loading area. Seeing the dungeons where the prisoners were kept and the salacious stories of prisoner conduct - you...More

We visited this site while on our bus history tour. It was really good to go and see such a place - ruins - but actually beautiful. To stand still and think about what it must have been like all those years ago, to have...More

Beautiful drive in. Magnificent camping area at end of road. Good moderate walk around a loop that joins up the points of interest, or drive to each seperately.

We visited late in the afternoon after going to Port Arthur: probably too much in one day. We were only able to do the short walk to the prison ruins, but the area is SO scenic, it deserves the longer two hour walk. This site...More
