I visited Sanqingshan on a Sunday in June and would like to share my experience with you. There are 2 entrances with cable car at Sanqingshan:
East Cable Car: Jinsha Cable Car (金沙索道)
South Cable Car: Shuangxi Cable Car (双溪索道)
It is recommended to choose the east one, as the cable car brings you closer to the mountain top. The south cable car brings you to midway of mountain, which means more climbing is required.
Transportation:
I took a train from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station to Yushan South Station (玉山南). Fare 214 RMB, journey about 2 hours, 40 mins. Because of my flight delay, I arrived at Yushan South Station about 18:20hr, which was too late to take the public transport. Hence, I took a private car costing 150rmb to base of mountain at eastern side, ie Jinsha (金沙). Journey is 70 mins.
If you arrive at Yushan South Station before 18:00hr (which my friend did), you can take a bus to Jinsha. The ticket office is at station building just after your exit. Fare is 20rmb, with complimentary map and bottle of water. Bus will first go to Yushan bus station, change to another bus to Jinsha. Journey is about 2 hours.
Accommodation:
It is recommended to stay at Jinsha instead of Yushan town so that you can start early in the morning. Yushan town is still 1 to 2 hours away, as explained in transportation above.
I stayed one night at Fengfeng hotel, which is walking distance to the east cable car. It is a no frill budget hotel. My friend stayed at ELBA Garden & Resort hotel, which is probably the best hotel at the mountain base.
Exploring Sanqingshan:
At the mountain base ticket office, first purchase entrance ticket 150rmb plus cable car 2-way 125rmb, total 275rmb. As we were there during off peak season, there wasn’t any queue for the cable car. After 10 to 15 mins, cable car brought us to the top of mountain.
We decided to do the popular loop based on recommendation by the locals. Loop can be done clockwise or anti-clockwise direction. We did the clockwise direction - Jade Platform (玉台), West Coast Scenic Area (西海岸景区), Sunshine Coast Scenic Area (阳光海岸景区), Goddess Peak (女神峰) and back to Jinsha. It took us about 8 hours for the entire hike, with occasional stops for rest & photoshoots. There were many steps to climb, with cliff side walkways along the mountain. It reminds me of Huangshan landscape.
It was unfortunate that it was raining for the entire morning and most part of the afternoon, with intermittent drizzle and heavy downpour. Even though my friend and I had rain gears, our lower part of pants, shoes and socks were totally wet. We could even squeeze out water from our socks during one of our shelter break.
Fortunately, we could see the 2 landmark formations - Oriental Goddess (东方女神) and Python Out of Mountain (巨蟒出山) around 4pm when the rain and fog cleared. What a beauty. We had missed many others in the morning and early afternoon. We shall return some time in future, during the dry season.
Tips:
1. When you exit the cable car station, take a clear photo of the national park map. While there are signage in the park, they are mainly signpost with directions to various named rock formations. There are no map with "you are here" signs.
2. As expected, food and drink are expensive at the mountain top. Suggest to pack your own picnic lunch, snacks and lots of water.
3. Note the cable car stops around 18:00hr (summer) & 17:00hr (winter). Make sure you have sufficient time to catch the last cable car.
4. Toilet facilities are available in the scenic area, but bring along wet wipes or tissue papers.
5. As English is not common in such remote places, have all your places, hotels, train/bus stations etc printed in Chinese to facilitate asking for directions.
6. Visit during the dry season. Pray that the weather is clear and beautiful.
Overall, Sanqingshan is worth visiting. I believe it is as beautiful as Huangshan, less the crowd. If you find this post helpful in planning your trip, kindly click "Helpful". Thanks so much.

It is amazing as to the very close similarity between many religions. At this Taoist sacred site the three most renowned summits, Yujing, Yushui, and Yuhua represent the Taoist Trinity. The latter represent the Three Pure Ones (aka, the Three Divine Teachers, The Three Purities). This is very alike to the Christian Trinity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The 229 square kilometres San Qing Shan national geopark mountain has many spectacular, unique shaped rocks. There is a continuos stream of beautiful panoramic views from the trail through the mountains and in many locations, built onto and attached to the cliff walls. In some locations the handrails are comprised of chains, often loaded with “love locks.”
This is a great place to reflect on our beautiful world.
San Qing Shan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This is my second time I visited Sanqingshan. Allow me to share my experiences with you.
Transportation:
I prefer the high-speed train, which is relatively cheap and comfortable. The nearest station is Yushan South Station 玉山南. After arriving at train station, there are 3 options to Jinsha 金沙, where the East Cable Car Station is located, depending on costs and time:
1. For the budget conscious, if you arrive before 18:00hr, you can take a bus. The ticket office is inside station building, on the left side with a green signage, just after your gantry exit. Fare is 20rmb, but journey is a long 2 hours. Bus will first go to the city, then need to walk about 100m to bus station, change to another mini bus to Jinsha. Mini bus is in pathetic condition as the seats are old and worn. Kindly see one of my photos for bus schedule, both directions.
2. Alternatively, you can take a shared cab at 30 rmb per pax, but requires 6 to go. As the 3 of us went in end Sep (off peak season), there isn't anyone to share the cab. Hence, we took the bus option.
3. Last option is to hire the tout cab gathering at the train station exit. The last time I paid 150rmb direct to Jinsha, journey only 1 hour.
Accommodation:
I highly recommend staying at ELBA Garden & Resort hotel, which is probably the best hotel at Jinsha. It is located just next to the cable car station. Kindly see my separate review of hotel.
Exploring Sanqingshan:
At the mountain base ticket office, first purchase entrance ticket 150rmb plus cable car 2-way 125 rmb, total 275 rmb. As we were there during off peak season, there wasn’t any queue for the cable car. Cable car took 10 to 15 mins to the top of mountain.
Weather was fine in the early morning.
We decided to take advantage of good weather to first cover the 2 landmark formations - Oriental Goddess 东方女神 and Python Out of Mountain 巨蟒出山.
After that, we continued in clockwise direction to explore entire region as follows:
Jade Platform 玉台, West Coast Scenic Area 西海岸景区, Sunshine Coast Scenic Area 阳光海岸景区, and back to Jinsha.
We had intermittent light shower in later morning and early afternoon. It took us about 7 hours for the entire hike. Certain parts of the hike are easy, basically flat on cliff side walkways along the mountain. Other parts are more challenging, with many steps to climb up & down. Hence, wear comfortable shoes.
Overall, Sanqingshan is much quieter compared to Huangshan. It is worthwhile to visit this place if you have 2 days to spare, allowing 1 day for transport.

We have travelled to most provinces in China and see a lot of mountains.... but SanQing Shan is definitely up a must see. But for some logistics first.... if you are taking the fast train (we took it from Nanjing because we live there) then the closest train station to the mountain is Shangrao. It is then a 1.2 hour taxi ride (about 260RMB) trip to the mountains. If you take the train to the stop before which is Yushan it is a 1.2 hour taxi ride as well on a more local totally beautiful road that goes through the mountains and valley and this is the way we went back. it is worth the drive and you see so much more, this is about 180RMB in a taxi. We asked one of the cars outside the hotel for a price to Yushan and he charged us 180RMB he was a fantastic super safe driver (see photo of his car below) he parks outside the Hilton at south entrance. Now for park/hotel logistics.... there are two entrances to the park. South Entrance is the least popular, the Hilton is the main hotel in this area, it is a luxury hotel amazing detail inside and like an oasis in the middle of the village! If you stay in the South entrance all hotels are walking distance to the cable car. There is small shops for snacks. If you stay at the East Entrance that is more buys the cable car is newer and there is less steps. We preferred the Hilton and south entrance because it was more quiet and local and friendly. Mountain Logistics : take the cable car up, otherwise you add 7,500 steps to your day. The Ticket is expensive 275RMB for around trip and the park entrance. When you get to the top of the cablecar you will see a map with English, take a photo of the map.. but now the park has updated all its signs and they have English around now. You can do the east ring in about 3 hours if you stop and take lots of photos and (we took 4 hours because we had to wait for the rain and clouds to life in places to see things)... and then the west ring is about 2.5 hours ... so you can do both rings in a day if you start at 7 or 7.30am when the cable car opens. it is amazing, beautiful even if it is pouring rain which it was for us.... didn't care because the clouds lift here and there and expose the most unbelievable vistas so just go and enjoy and take 1million photos like we did!!! It is not manic crowded like the other AAAAA places which is surprising, I am sure that it will happen eventually but not yet so hurry and see it now!!! If you stay in South entrance at the Hilton I have put a photo of the best restaurant in town, get the hotel to write down little meet ribs and potatoes... and eggplant and beans... both dishes are super fantastic and cold beer is available perfect.

We hiked for two days in Sanqingshan and even though it was during the rainy season, we loved it.
The ticket allows for two days entry but if you want to return the next day, register with the ticket office when you buy your ticket. We didn't know this but the staff were helpful on our way down the first day and directed us to the turnstile to register our tickets for day two. Please note that you'll need to have your passport with you to do this and to enter the next day.
Best prepare to get very soggy. Even if it's not raining, the mountains are in the cloud level so everything will get damp. We were completely drenched the second day. It rained almost the entire five hours we were on the mountain. It was still gorgeous though, even more like Sung Dynasty landscape paintings.
Please note that the path on the right around the Oriental Goddess has a lot more stairs than the main path named something like the Western Sunshine Coast. This can be tough on your knees and slippery so wear something with excellent treads.
If you come during rainy season, don't schedule your time too tightly. For example, because of safety reasons, the cable car doesn't run when there's lightning. We waited for 45 minutes in the station for the service to start up again. While in the queue, a tour group found out that their hotel (by a river) was flooded and all of their friends had to be moved to the fourth floor. So choose your hotel with an eye to a safe location.
Also, keep your valuables safe. Both my friend and I had our backpacks opened on different days, at quiet locations by people who crept up on us. In both cases, they appeared to be visitors who were part of a tour group. We had seen on Tripadvisor that someone had lost a phone and so had locked everything up safely in the hotel. Nothing lost but rain got in our bags before we noticed they were opened!
You might want to arrive from Shangrao instead of Yushan. We arrived in Yushan and took a taxi to the Hilton but the access road after the toll was blocked by landslides. The police didn't allow anyone through. Our taxi driver was hysterical by this point. We then had to return to Yushan and go by the old and more scenic route called Ling Hu Lu. Beautiful but it was one expensive taxi ride!
We found out later from the Hilton staff that the road from Shangrao is more predictable and less prone to landslide. The Hilton also offers a free shuttle for their guests to and from the Shangrao train station. This has to be booked ahead with the hotel staff. They'll pick you up too as long as you email ahead.

My wife and I went to SanQingShan with a group of students (all local Chinese) and had a great time. We hiked up and took the gondola down (saw some "hikers" in high heels and others being carried by porters if that's your thing) spending one night camping on the top. The mist of the clouds amongst the jagged rocks that seem to go forever is just amazingly beautiful.
Hiking trails are enough for the most intrepid adventurer and while some areas have a lot of tourists (all local Chinese from what I could tell) there were other areas with few people. The path on the way up had Daoist carvings every once in a while and there were some small temples at the top though go for the natural beauty.
The paths along the top are well-maintained with boardwalks making up much of the peak paths near the gondola (there's not much of an alternative). The other side has well-kept paths and some staircases carved out of rock.
The local area at the base of the mountain doesn't have much around though there were some places to eat and stay (we camped so I can't recommend a hotel). If you want a breathtakingly beautiful place off the beaten path I'd very much recommend this (its a UN world heritage site too for what it's worth).

Probably one of my favorite places I have ever visited in many trips to China. Scenery is absolutely like living in a Chinese landscape painting. We started from the South Entrance, took the gondola up the mountain at 7:30 a.m. and hiked until we took the gondola back down at 5:00 p.m. We covered both the eastern and western loops, and went on the side trail to the highest peak. Spectacular place. The weather was perfect and the crowds were not bad at all when we went in late October.

Good news, if you go on the right time there is a hardly a crowd there! In a way that's a pity because the view is magnificent. It is not easy to reach, you need to either get to Shangrao or Yushan by train. The former is reachable by the D fast train from either Shanghai or Nanchang, but the latter is closer and more frequent bus connection.
I stayed in the Jingsha section, which is the eastern side of the mountain and the newer of the 2 cablecar stations. If you want to stay up at the mountain, the hotels are all around the southern cable car station.
It's possible to hike up and down the mountain, but as it was raining and I only had 1 1/2 days there, I opted to take the cable car which is only a 15 minutes journey. Once you get to the top, the cliffside trails are magnificent. Some of the signages are not that clear but there are enough park employees on hand to ask (Chinese speaking only).
It is possible to do all the trails in 3-4 hours but if the weather is good, just take in the view slowly!

San Qing Shan is a beautiful park with stunning rock formations and panoramic hiking trails. It is a lot like Huangshan but without the crowds//incessant aggressive salespersons. The mountaintop hiking trails were narrow but paved and well maintained. At times there were chokepoints, which were pretty scary considering that the path overlooked a 1000+ foot drop. One can either take the cableway up(~200RMB per person, 10min ride) or choose to hike all the way to the main hiking trails(2.5 hours, essentially free). We chose the cableway to save time and energy as the hike is long and steep. The cableway(both The south cableway and the other one), drop you around 1000 feet below the actual scenic mountain hiking trails, and the climb up to the main hiking loop(Western Sunshine) takes around an hour from the cableway.
We chose to walk around via the scenic pathways, which were narrow but extraordinarily well maintained and beautiful. Pictures cannot actually depict the natural beauty of a walk along this path. The path gently slopes up and winds along the cliff face. There are two scenic pathways, both of which offer equally inspiring views, and we walked up Western Sunshine, took a loop around the Sanqing Temple area, and walked back down Sunshine Coast. This loop took about 5 hours at a leisurely pace.
We went to San Qing Shan on a sunny day, and down at the base of the mountain, it was in the upper 80s and unbearably hot; however, the summit trail was shady and it actually wasn't that hot on our walk. VIsiting San Qing Shan on a sunny day provides for a memorable vista of the park, but even in rain and clouds this mountain is beautiful, as throughout the mountain there are observation points where you can see the "sea of clouds" on a cloudy day. All in all, San Qing Shan is a beautiful and awe-inspiring place to visit, rain or shine. Highly recommend visiting this gem of a place.

This is really worth the trip out. We arrived at 3.00pm, and headed to the cable car which cost 70CNY for a single or 125CNY for a return, we opted for the single and found upon returning that the cost back down the mountain was 55CNY, a total of 125CNY, no saving on buying a return! While here we needed to buy the entrance ticket, 150CNY.
The sights are incredible and so are the steps there, be prepared for a lot of walking! Having been on the Tiger Leaping Gorge trek I found this walk to be similar without the rough terrain! The amount of man made paths that have been made against the cliff face really is something to witness!
We took the cheapest accommodation option by staying in a tent, this was not by choice, Saturday's are busy and by the time we'd finished watching the sunset, we were the last ones to go in search of somewhere to stay, lucky enough we had the flash light on the phone to negotiate the steps in the darkness of the night!
Commuted 2 hours by bus from Shangroa on the 13:30 bus (上饶), returning 15:30 the next day

Hi There. We are a group of 3 people in our 70s (some of us with sore knees :( ) Would you advise south or east entrance? We can walk but too many steps would be very difficult. Is it possible to do only one part of the trail if necessary? I assume we would still see beautiful vistas???
Your response will much appreciated

Hi! If you wanna avoid steps, definitely take the east entrance (Jinsha Ropeway) as the south entrance is lower down the mountain and you will have to climb more. The route is like this - when u start from the ropeway, there r some options u can take, looping clockwise or anti-clockwise back to the rope way. I can't remember what direction was mine but we walked for about 20 to 30 min on flat ground then many stairs up to the python. Thereafter if u wanna move on to sunshine cost and west coast where there r lots of flat ground u can, but do rem there r always staircases and the whole loop take 6 to 7 hrs. yes u can always do part of the trail and then go back the way u came...u would still see nice scenery. time yourself, assess ur fitness level and decide on a turn back point. in my case I hadn't planned on completing the whole loop. but as I progressed I felt like i would rather climb in a new place than go back the way i came. Take it easy, even going up the steps, I rested every 25 steps. it really does test ur perseverance.

How long does it take to walk up the mountain from where the cable car drops you off? (Or does it drop you off at the top?)

The usual hike up the mountain and back to the cable car area is around 90 minutes.

I am going to be traveling with some other Americans in a few weeks (mid-July). One is a 70 year old man. The rest of us are younger, but standard Americans (aka, not super fit). Obviously we'll buy all of the tram passes to avoid as much climbing as possible, but do you think this trip is feasible for our group? I'm mostly concerned about the climb up -- I read that someone said it's an hour of climbing stairs. Is that one hour straight? Or is it manageable?
We did go to Zhangjiajie (another mountain) a few years earlier with the same group, but getting to the top was not a big deal because they had buses to take us up most of the way. Just wondering if we should look at Huangshan or another mountain instead.
Thanks!

HI there r certain stretches of Sanqingshan tt have flights after flights of stairs...however u can always slow down like we did....rest every 25 steps....this mountain needs perseverance...at one stretch the stairs were steeper but there were chains to hang on to. There r many senior folks fr China there so it is doable for a 70 year old. But be prepared to sweat. There r also long stretches where it is just flat ground and u enjoy the stunning scenery...give ourselves at least 7 hrs to complete the whole loop...

If you mean "Shanghai," the answer is that it's about 2.5 hours on the train to Shangrao, and then an hour or so by bus/car/shuttle to the mountain. Well worth it, however.

Hi Ka Hong, were you able to use the internet when you were there? If yes, which telco did you subscribe to? I will be going there in 1 week's time. Will need access to internet for work purpose. Also, which hotel did you stay in? Thanks

On the south side, from the bottom to where the cable car goes would take between 1 and two hours to walk at least. From the top of the cable car on the south side, there are two loops. We did the West one in the morning and the East one in the afternoon. We went pretty much everywhere, but it took from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you have half a day, I would recommend taking the cable car, hiking around the east loop, and taking the cable car back down. I wouldn't spend less than half a day there.
