The CENTRO STORICO (historical centre) of Larino is quite small. At one time, though, the old part of the Town had a population of 10,000. Today the number of people who live there are in the hundreds, not thousands. However, the centre of much of the life of the entire community (new and old) centers on the lovely old cathedral. It was built in 1312 AD two years before the Battle of Bannockburn (June 24, 1314) and, of course, long before the New World was discovered by Columbus (1492). Pay particular attention to the portal with is, literally, scores of carvings. If you're careful you'll see little birds, weird human faces and forms, along with florals and fleur di lis. Right above the entry way you will see a crucified Christ and, further above, symbolic representations of the disciples. Inside there is a stained glass window with an image of the Town's patron saint, San Pardo. You will be surprised by the size and grandeur of the structure. In the sixties some of the adornments from the Baroque period were stripped away leaving a rather stark monochromatic image. There is a crypt and a back room where a monumental Bishop's throne is displayed, along with a silver effigy of San Pardo and relics of the saint. If you have some family connection with Larino there is no doubt that your ancestors worshipped here. It truly is hallowed ground.

Really special and not to be missed if passing through Larrino. There is a sweet bar opposite from which you can have a refreshing beer and admire the outside which is truly lovely.
